http://www.research.fsu.edu/researchr/2000/features/connection.html
Write Connection by Patrick A. Smith Claudia Johnson drops into a seat at a table outside a Tallahassee eatery and takes one deep breath after she introduces herself. She's come to discuss, among other things, her new book, Crafting Short Screenplays That Connect She won't slow down for the next three hours. Johnson has just come from her first viewing of the hit movie Gladiator, and she wants to talk about it. The conversation is comfortable. Johnson has a knack, it seems, for drawing people into dialogue before they've had time to worry about asking the wrong question or speaking out of turn. Listening to Johnson connect one topic to another is something akin to watching Tiger Woods lapping the field or listening to Yo-Yo Ma play the cello sonatas of Beethoven and Brahms—seemingly effortless, but it's hard to imagine doing it so well. She turns seamlessly from her thoughts on the movie, the original topic, to something as prosaic as a brawl at a Lakers/Spurs game, which she describes as "great snowballs of humanity rolling toward the high-dollar seats." And then back again.

Home Department Server Course List Story Week Festival of Writers 2002 The Fiction Writing Department is one of the largest creative writing programs in the country, and one of the few to offer both a four-year undergraduate major and the Master of Fine Arts in creative writing. The Department prepares students for a wide range of careers in novel, short story, creative nonfiction, playwriting, screenwriting, and the teaching of writing, as well as for an attractive variety of jobs in which ability to write and imaginative problem-solving are crucial factors. In Spring 1995 the Department's annual publication, Hair Trigger 17 , which publishes only writings by Columbia College undergraduate and graduate Fiction Writing students, won a Gold Crown award from the Columbia University Scholastic Press Association (CSPA). In 1993 Hair Trigger 14 won first place in both the Associated Writing Programs' (AWP) and CSPA's national competitions for college literary magazines. The judge for the AWP award said, Hair Trigger walks away with first prize.

Question 1: Where can I get the information to set up my word processor for the proper screenplay format?
Okay, here goes... Set up your word processor with the following configurations:
  • Open your word processor software.
  • Set your font for Courier 12 point. (Yes, it's ugly but it's required.)
  • Set your spacing for single (then double space, as needed.)
  • Set your top, bottom and right margins at 1 inch.
  • Set the left margin at 1.5 inches. This will put your left margin at zero on the ruler at the top of your monitor.
Now, using the zero on your monitor ruler as a reference, set the following tabs:
  • 1.25 Inches. Start of the dialogue column
