For some of my projects I have to cut curves on boards. My old Craftsman jig saw just doesn't do the job (blade wavers, cuts at unpredictable angles instead of straight). Question is: should I get a scroll saw or a band saw? What are the advantages or limitations on each type saw, and how would I decide what is best for me? And, of the type you recommend, what make/model would you recommend? Thx! TG "Jesus went out from there... When the Sabbath came, He began to teach... and the many listeners were astonished, saying, “Is not this the carpenter?" Mark 6

It took a bit of work to get it together, but when the handle is turned, all the gears work, and the spinners counter-rotate. Eric is probably trying to figure out how to make it more efficient (or take it apart). A few of the finished ones. More are on the way (even though it's a bit late). All are unique and the wood is from the farm. Ann scrollsawed an ornate 'Cinderella' carriage for Alina. And personalized notepads for the kids and grandkids. Since we had a lot of oak branches, this year we decided to make nutcrackers as presents.

Feb-21-03, 00:09 AM (CDT) "Do you ever feel like smashing a piece to bits!" Being on winter break this week, I braved the cold in my unheated shop (I do have a space heater) to finish up two small mission style tables. Do you ever feel like jumping up and down and smashing a piece to bits when all the mistakes add up to an unacceptable product! Instead, I decided to keep it as a tool table in my shop! I am still trying to master the through mortise and tenon....I just can't seem to get that perfect fit, not too tight or too loose. Any suggestions? Tomorrow it is going to be in the 40's! Yea. It's been too cold up here in Massachusetts. Alert Edit Reply Reply With Quote ... Top

    76. Scroll Saw
scroll sawing is an easy hobby to get started in, the saw runs quiet enough so happenbut are minor compared to what can happen with other woodworking equipment
    http://www.sawdustmaking.com/ SCROLL SAWS/scroll_saw.htm
Scroll Saws When I look over the new scroll saws memories always come back to me of the first one that I had. My father made it for me, he built it around an old Briggs and Straton engine, took the head off, drilled a hole in the piston and put a stubby shaft with a slot on it to hold the blade. The table was a disk from a grain seed drill, the top spring to tension the blade was from an old mattress. I got hours of pleasure from this tool, it was what got me started in woodworking. In those days I knew nothing of variable speeds, sawdust blowers, hold downs, C - arms, spiral or reverse blades. Scroll sawing is an easy hobby to get started in, the saw runs quiet enough so as not to disturb the neighbours, it does not require a large investment in equipment nor require a large work space. Best of all it is a relatively safe hobby, injuries may happen but are minor compared to what can happen with other woodworking equipment. Choose a saw that feels comfortable to you, many hours will be spent in front of it. The table should be large enough to support the material both in front of the blade and behind it, the controls should be convient to reach and easy to set. The blower should be powerful enough to remove sawdust even when set far enough above the material so you can clearly see the cutting lines. The saw should run smoothly, if it has excess vibration your hands will become fatigued very quickly.

    1880 Census Report
SAWS BAND-SAWS The band-saw in its smaller sizes is not much used for dimension-sawing. While it can be so applied, it is for curved sawing that it meets it widest adaptation. Log sawing and resawing are done with wide blades; scroll-sawing requires the use of narrow and thin blades. Of course the advantage of the band-saw over the jig or reciprocating saw is its continuous motion. This makes the presentation of work more easy and accurate, and the dust is carried down away from the lines of the marking. The advantages of the principle of the band-saw have already been noted Figs. 404 a and b show a saw strained by screw and spring. The top guide is counter-weighted and clamped close to the cut. The lower guide is just below the table. In this tool the thrust is taken by a steel washer set forward by a cylinder of cast iron for blades of different widths. The washer may be rotated as it wears. The side guides are adjustable for different thick nesses and confine the washer. Fig. 405 shows the arrangement for straining the saw by a weight. The thrust is here borne by a steel plate, which is adjusted by four set-screws, so as to have a true bearing against the blade. The side guides are of wood. A brush keeps the sawdust from adhering to the rubber tire.
