Did you know...
Historically, the sea otter was found from the northern coast of Japan up through the Kurile Islands and the Commander Islands; across the Aleutian Islands; and down the coasts of Alaska, Canada, and the western United States to central Baja California. In the mid-1700s Russian hunters began harvesting sea otters for their pelts. By the late 1700s the Russians were jointed by American and English fur traders. The 1800s saw large-scale otter harvesting and fur trading operations. Sea otters were nearly extinct by the turn of the century. Less than 2,000 otters remained. The International Fur Seal Treaty of 1911 stopped further exploitation of sea otters. Populations have gradually increased since then. Presently, the sea otter lives in shallow waters off Alaska and Aleutian Islands, the Commander Islands, and along the California coast from Santa Cruz to Point Conception. Those Naughty Sea Otters
I'm not overly fond of sea otters.
There, I said it and I'm glad. In fact, I am more than glad. Suddenly, I have the lightness of spirit normally reserved for winning Olympic athletes, pilgrims in sight of the Promised Land and the criminally insane. Yes, yes, I know otters are cute, with their little squashed-in faces, hand-like paws and black button noses. And yes, I have seen all of those adorable little mannerisms: the paw-waving, the superciliosus smiles, the grooming; all of which inevitably evoke ooshy-gooshy responses in easily-swayed humans. And I also realize they are a growth industry in central California; tourists here gobble up sea otter curios like so much jalapeno-flavored popcorn. Every bar in Monterey offers "Sea Otter Margaritas", every trinket shop sells battery-operated plastic sea otter dolls that smash plastic rocks against plastic abalones and every department store pushes "Mother and Baby Sea Otter" garlic shredders made out of genuine redwood burl. Despite this outpouring of emotion, I still think otters are overrated. Now, I don't want a flood of anguished letters calling me bad names and casting aspersions upon my character. For one thing there's not that much to cast aspersions upon. So, save yourself some time. Don't hobble over to your writing desk, pull out that hideous monogrammed stationary, put quill to paper and pen some quasi-coherent complaint. I'm not suggesting we turn otters into hats. I just think the hoopla is overblown.

What hurts sea otter populations?
In areas where the sea life that killer whales normally prey on is becoming scarce, killer whales have started eating sea otters. Eagles will also capture and eat young sea otters. Oil spills are particularly damaging to sea otter populations. Nyac is actually a survivor from the Exxon Valdez spill. The Exxon Valdez spill happened in 1989 when an oil tanker ran aground in the Prince William Sound off Alaska, spilling 232,000 barrels of oil into the ocean. She is providing valuable information on the long-term survival of animals exposed to oil. In the 1700s and 1800s fur traders hunted sea otters to extinction along the British Columbia Coast. Since then it has been made illegal to hunt sea otters. Milo and Nyac are pleased about the government protection but oil spills are a constant worry for their relatives along the coast. Only one tablespoon of oil on a sea otter's fur will reduce the otter's ability to keep warm and it will die quickly.

Sea Otter. The US Fish and Wildlife Service is the agency responsible for maintaininga healthy population of sea otters (Enhydra lutris) in Alaska.
http://www.r7.fws.gov/mmm/seaotter.html
Sea Otter The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service is the agency responsible for maintaining a healthy population of sea otters ( Enhydra lutris ) in Alaska. Sea otters are the largest member of the weasel family and the smallest marine mammal. They are conspicuous members of near shore ecosystems of the North Pacific, ranging from the Aleutian Islands and the Alaska Peninsula south through Prince William Sound and southeast Alaska. Because they have the densest fur of any mammal, sea otters were nearly extirpated during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries due to over-hunting for their fur. The Marine Mammal Protection Act now prohibits a commercial harvest and allows only coastal Alaska Natives to hunt sea otters for subsistence and creation of handicrafts. Sea otters made a dramatic comeback from near extinction and now occupy most of their former range in Alaska. The goals of the Marine Mammals Management Office are to maintain the Alaska sea otter population within its optimum sustainable population range, to maintain healthy habitats for sea otters, and to conserve and manage sea otters to ensure that there will be opportunities for a variety of human uses, including native subsistence hunting and wildlife viewing. Toward this end, Marine Mammals Management works with a variety of user groups in Alaska including Alaska Native groups, tourism, and fishing industries. The Marine Mammals Management Office monitors the size, status and trends of the sea otter population and collects life history data to ensure a healthy, viable population of sea otters in Alaska.

Sea otters consume approximately 20% of their body weight in food daily. They dive to the bottom of their shallow shoreline habitat to feed upon sea urchins, clams, oysters, and other shellfish. Only strong males are able to catch fish. The otters return to the surface with their prey, float on their backs, and strike the shellfish together or against rocks to pry them open. Sea otters have a strong influence on coastal ecosystems. They restrict the sea urchin populations in near-shore habitats, allowing kelp forests to flourish (sea urchins graze heavily on kelp). It's easy to see where sea otters thrive: Just look for abundant kelp. Pups are born (generally one per litter) after a six-month gestation period and remain with their mother for 12 weeks. Fathers play no role in the offspring's upbringing; the two sexes tend to remain separate except when breeding. There are three subspecies of sea otters, two of which are in the United States. The Southern, or California, sea otter ( Enhydra lutris nereis ) is represented by only one population in California and is declining at a disturbing rate. The Northern sea otter (

Sea Otters Sea otters average four feet in length and weigh between 40-60 pounds. While their bodies are adapted for water - they have flipper-like hind feet and broad flat tails - sea otters are actually quite slow swimmers when compared to other marine mammals. Unlike most marine mammals, sea otters lack a thick layer of fat to insulate them from cold temperatures. Instead, they have an extremely dense coat of fur which helps to trap a layer of air close to their skin to keep them warm. Female sea otters are ready to bear young at three to four years, and normally give birth to one pup. Since pups are heavily dependent upon their mothers for up to one year, sea otters usually reproduce every other year. Sea otter pups are typically two feet in length and weigh between three and five pounds at birth. Southern sea otters are found along the central coast of California. They eat sea urchins, mollusks, squid, crabs, and clams. Their teeth are specially adapted to eating shellfish, allowing them to crush shells and scoop out meat. They will occasionally eat finfish, but their rounded teeth lack the sharp edges necessary to handle the slippery prey.

Sea otters are sleek, furry, streamlined marine mammals that live along rocky Pacific Ocean coasts, bays, and kelp beds. They are found from the coast of California through Alaska and along the eastern coast of Russia to northern Japan. This type of weasel spends most of its time in the water, where it is fast and graceful; it is slow and awkward on land. The scientific name is Enhydra lutris (Genus species). The sea otter is a protected species because of previous overhunting (they were once hunted for their thick, dense fur). Anatomy : Sea otters are up to about 4 feet (1.3 meters) long and weigh from 45 to 82 pounds (20-37 kilograms). They have webbed hind feet which they use to swim; the forefeet are smaller. The claws are semi-retractible. The ears and nostrils close when the otter is underwater. Sea otters sleep and rest on their backs, usually anchored in a kelp (seaweed) bed. Fur : Sea otters are kept warm in the cold Pacific Ocean by their dense fur and high metabolism; they are the only marine mammal that has no layer of insulating fat. Sea otters have the densest fur of any mammal; the coat has over half a million hairs per square inch. Careful grooming with the forepaws keeps the fur waterproof. Oil spills cause the fur to lose its waterproof quality, causing the sea otter to get hypothermia, usually killing it. Diet : Sea otters are carnivores (meat-eaters). They eat

How did Shedd get its four Alaska sea otters? The three oldest are rehabbed orphans from the Exxon Valdez oil spill, and the youngest is an orphan from an Alaskan storm in 1990.
How do Alaska sea otters keep warm if they don't have blubber? Alaska sea otters depend on their fur and a fast metabolism for protection from the cold. The fur is made up of outer guard hairs and extremely dense under fur. When the otters groom, they trap air at the base of the under fur to provide an insulating layer of air between their skin and the cold water. The guard hairs cling together, forming a protective covering that helps to keep the under fur dry. Natural oils in the fur also help to repel water. The fur must be clean and meticulously groomed. A sea otter also has an extremely fast metabolism. An adult eats the equivalent of 20 to 25 percent of its body weight daily, which amounts to about 17 pounds of food for an adult male.

A family of river otters may include 3 or 4 young, while the sea otter usually has a single pup, born in the water. The river otter makes a tunnel into the side of a river bank. At the end of the tunnel is a den lined with grass. A river otter's tail is much longer than the sea otter's . The tail is about 2/3 the length of its head and body. River otters do not float on their backs. River otters swim in rivers, streams, and oceans. They often come on shore.

(This photograph came from the book The Amber Forest) Sea Otters are cute and a very popular attraction. Here are some interesting facts about Sea Otters. Sea Otters have a nickname which is "Old men of the Sea" because of the white whiskers they sometimes have on their faces. The scientific name for the otters is Enhydra Lutris which means otter in the water. Groups of otters are called rafts. Enhydra Lutris eats abalone, kelp, clams, and sea urchins. Sea Otters have big appetites. Mature male otters can consume 5,000 pounds of food each year. Although otters will eat any kind of marine animal, they tend to favor slow moving prey over speedier fish. Sea Otters are among the smallest of all mammals. Big lower teeth are used to scoop meat out of shells. Male otters grow to just over 4 feet long including their tails. Sea otters babies are almost as big as their mother. Their webbed feet act like flippers. Sea Otters are really interesting, but they were becoming extinct because they were hunted for their pelts (fur). We must try to save them. Sea Otters are cute and cool. I just hope they don't become extinct! HOME OCEANS

Factoid:
The sea otter has the thickest fur in the animal kingdom. Status: Threatened off California. Population: Today there are fewer than 2,000 southern sea otters off the coast of California. Almost 150,000 northern sea otters inhabit the coastline of Alaska, and there are approximately 9,000 in Russia (Siberia). Two hundred years ago, demand for the otter's pelt nearly led to its extinction. Threats: Oil spills, habitat loss, plastic entanglement, and conflict with abalone fishermen. Survival: The average sea otter lives 10 or 11 years.
Unlike other marine mammals, the sea otter does not have a layer of blubber (fat) to help keep it warm. If an otter's fur gets coated with oil or any other substance, the otter can easily die from cold and exposure. The sea otter is the largest member of the weasel family. Southern sea otters typically reach about four feet in length. Females average 45 pounds, while males average 65 pounds. Alaskan or northern sea otters can reach up to 100 pounds.

The sea Otter is perhaps the best known otters. When you think of an otter, most probably the first thing that comes to your mind is the cute, cuddily face of the Southern Sea Otter. There are, in fact, two kinds of Sea Otters, Southern Sea Otters, which live more to the south than Alaskan Sea Otters. Other than the distinction in size and habitat, they are very much alike.
Sea Otters are unique marine mammals in that they use tools such as rocks to open their prey such as the shells of abalone. These social otters float in rafts in the Pacific Ocean just offshore. They have extraordinarily dense fur to keep them warm and are the heaviest otter species.

Now that is BIG! Sea Otters are the heaviest of all the otters, and with the males weighing up to 45 kg that is not hard to believe. Feet The Sea Otter has small fore paws that have no noticeable fingers. The back paws look a lot like flippers because of the webbed toes. When swimming underwater, the Sea Otter is a great navigator. The hind feet push the sea otter foward in great swoops, and the front paws pull it along. The paws do not look really sensitive or manipulative, but surprisingly they are quite agile. Sea Otters have short semi-retractable claws on their paws. The otters can rub, roll, pull, and twist with lots of strength. They are agile enough to take buttons, belts, rings, and things in pockets with ease that only comes from pickpockets. The Sea Otter will use its paws to stash food from the bottom of the ocean in baggy pockets of skin under its forelegs. Once back on the top, floating comfortably on its back and anchored to kelp, the Otter will retrieve the food, sometimes opening it with a rock on its belly, and enjoy its meal.

Sea Otters
Why Are They Endangered?
The Europeans didn't know about the Sea Otter until 1741. They found the Sea Otter when some men were down on the beach and the Sea Otters were in a bed of kelp.
The sailors started killing them for food, clothing and fur blankets. They started to explore the Pacific Ocean for Sea Otters because Sea Otter fur got very popular in China.
Spanish settlers traded otter pelts to the Europeans for things that they needed. The Sea Otters off of the California Coast soon became endangered.
The U.S.A., Russia, Japan, and Great Britain decided in 1911 that they would no longer hunt seals or Sea Otters. By that time, everybody thought the Sea Otter was extinct, but, there were a few hidden in the Bays and coves of the Aleutian Islands.
Facts About The Sea Otter:
Where they live: The Sea Otter lives in the Pacific Ocean. They dwell near the Western shores and the United States. Sea Otters seldom leave the water.
Activities: Sea Otters mostly swim on their back. They also eat and sleep on their back by floating. To keep warm and comfortable they sleep on their back in a bunch of kelp.
Food: Sea Otters eat a fifth of their own body weight. They eat octopus, fish, jelly fish, clams, crabs, sea urchins, mussels, abalones and squid. To break open their food they either use rocks or bang them against each other. Sea Otters dive 180 feet for their food and can stay under water for 4 minutes to catch their food.
