Siyo (Cherokee for hello)
I recently took a course at the Smithsonian regarding Black Native
Americans and a lot of the information was about the Freedman. The
Freedman were the former slaves of the NAs of the Five Civilized Tribes.
After the Civil War (The Indians sided with the South) the US demanded
that the Indians give the former slaves citizenship in the tribe and they
became the so called Freedmen. The citizenship in the tribe did not flow
to the children of the Freedmen except in the Seminole Tribe.
Unfortunately, there is a movement afoot among the Seminole to kick out
the blacks. Oh well. There are Freedman roles that you can access to

Below, you will find links to a few. Note: As you look at these pages, pay attention to the information about the names of the tribes. Where do the names come from, and what do they reveal about the relationships of Native Americans and European settlers?
  • The Seminole Tribe of Florida has a unique history: it was formed by survivors of many different tribes who fought together against the Europeans to remain free. The web page describes the history and culture as well as the tribal government.
  • The web page of the Lenni Lenape Tribe (also called the Delaware Indians) tells the history of the tribe and has pictures of traditional clothing and sound clips of the Lenape language.

April 2001 Newsletter Gathering Together

I'm excited! KD Edwards is returning to visit us in Orlando! And… he's bringing his wife and family! Last time they were here, we also had a “Gathering.” All those who attended enjoyed it tremendously. KD and the Red River Singers shared stories with us, did some drumming, and had dance demonstrations. I do remember needing extra Kleenex because one story touched my heart. Or, was it because I was laughing so hard at another of his stories? Whichever it was, the day was enjoyable and went too fast. Regalia is optional. Wear something comfortable that you might like to dance in. If you've never participated in an American Indian dance, you've got a special treat coming. A potluck supper will follow about 6pm. Remember to bring extra to share with our guests. Call Maryanna with your ideas so she can organize the food preparations. Bring your food directly to the kitchen. (Thanks, Maryanna, for all your hard work and great tasting food!)

Researching Native Americans
by Charity A.Monk
Subject Area: Social Studies Grade Level: Grades 3-5 Topic(s): Native Americans Purpose(s) of Lesson: Students will learn about four tribes of Indians who lived across the United States: the Iroquois, Pueblos, Seminoles, and the Sioux. Students will use the Internet to search for facts about these four tribes. Students will create a four-page flipbook about the tribe of their choice. Materials Needed: Internet, computer, United States map, and paper Time Required: Two weeks Procedure: Introduce the lesson by showing the students where the following states are located: South Dakota, Arizona, Florida, and New York. Have the following resources available for students to use: encyclopedias, atlases, social studies book, and computer with Internet. Divide the class into four teams and have them research the common crops and climate of the four states and report their findings to the class. Conduct a brain-storming session about how they think Native American tribes in these areas might have differed or been the same.
