Africa What Do You Know?
Purpose:
To practice basic map skills while reviewing the location and physical features of Africa and Senegal. Materials:
  • "What Do You Know?" worksheet for each student
  • "Something to Think About" worksheet for each student Suggested Activities:
A condensed version of Susan Hall's thought-provoking article "Are You Going to Teach About Africa?" appears in Seymour Fersh's 1989 book Learning about People and Cultures . Although originally written in 1970, Hall's message is still relevant today. It is included in the Information for Teachers for your information.
  • Have students individually complete "Something to Think About", then compare their responses in small groups. Ask each group to discuss the relationship between their true/false responses, and their responses to "Something to Think About."
  • Have students predict responses to the true or false quiz for their parent's or grandparent's generation. Survey parents or grandparents. Compare actual responses to student predictions. Discuss possible reasons for differences.
  • Have teams of students develop a plan for surveying magazine articles, television shows, movies, and/or videotapes for content messages about Africa. Share results of the investigation with another class or with your Peace Corps Volunteer.

At home in Senegal, N'Dour has parlayed his godlike celebrity influence into improving lives. Recently, his participation in campaigns to get across the importance of vaccinations and AIDS awareness lured thousands of children to clinics, where previous tries had fizzled. Now, N'Dour's collaboration with the West has taken a new turn toward jointly improving the state of technology in the Third World.

As in many countries, disadvantage accumulates at the level of women and girls. In 1995, female literacy countrywide was just over half the rate for men (23 percent compared to 44 percent), and the discrepancy was still greater in rural areas.
Tostan, literally means "breaking out of the egg" in Wolof, the language spoken by the majority of Senegal's 7.9 million people and is among a number of innovative rural development and women's education initiatives that are addressing the problem at its source. It offers an 18-month learning program that combines basic education in national languages with practical development issues, and provides rural people with the resources to improve their standard of living while fostering increased confidence in their way of life. More than literacy, this breakthrough program offers participants the tools to tackle such community issues as health, hygiene and the environment. The program uses six modules that link literacy to life skills in a highly participatory process of problem solving. Tostan successfully sustains the link between basic education and rural development, giving adult learners not only literacy and numeracy skills in their national languages but the means to understand and solve local problems.

    GOVERNMENT AND POLITICAL CONDITIONS
Senegal is a secular republic with a strong presidency, weak legislature, reasonably independent judiciary, and multiple political parties. Senegal is one of the few African states that has never experienced a coup d’etat. As noted above, power was transferred peacefully, if not altogether democratically, from Senghor to Diouf in 1981, and once again, this time in fully democratic elections, from Diouf to Wade in March 2000.
The President is elected by universal adult suffrage to a 5-year term. The unicameral National Assembly has 120 members, who are elected separately from the President. The Socialist Party dominated the National Assembly until April 2001, when in free and fair legislative elections, President Wade’s coalition won a majority (89 of 120 seats). The Cour de Cassation (Highest Appeals Court, equivalent to the U.S. Supreme Court) and the Constitutional Council, the justices of which are named by the President, are the nation's highest tribunals. Senegal is divided into 10 administrative regions, each headed by a governor appointed by and responsible to the President. The law on decentralization, which came into effect in January 1997, distributed significant central government authority to regional assemblies.
Senegal’s principal political party was for 40 years the Socialist Party (PS). Its domination of political life came to an end in March 2000, when Abdoulaye Wade, the leader of the Senegalese Democractic Party (PDS) and leader of the opposition for more than 25 years, won the presidency. Under the terms of the 2001 constitution, future presidents will serve for 5 years and be limited to two terms. Wade was the last President to be elected to a 7-year term.

Once a singer in the innovative '70s band Xalam, Souleymane Faye now has a strong solo career, and in a departure from the customary standoffishness among competing stars, Souleymane has collaborated with star singers Cheikh Lô and Coumba Gawlo Seck. Ex-Super Etoile drummer Pape Dieng has joined the growing ranks of Dakar producers, turning out superior mbalax releases for Thione Seck and relative newcomer Khar M'Baye Maddiaaga, a female griot singer whose melismatic voice recalls gravel-throated flamenco singers. But despite competition from Khar and Coumba, the grand lady of Senegalese pop remains Kine Lam, a booster of traditional culture who roared onto the pop scene in the '80s and now records both acoustic traditional records and state-of-the-art mbalax.
