Archive of art and design - subject guide
Fashion
From the classic couture of the House of Worth to the street style of Antoni + Alison, the collections of the Archive of Art and Design show how fashion design has changed since the 19th century. As well as designs and sketches, there are also fabric samples, marketing records, photographs and correspondence, documenting the careers of several top British fashion designers. Revolutionary fashion styles are represented in the archives of John Stephen (the "King of Carnaby Street"), Barbara Hulanicki and Biba, the Presage fashion forecast magazine, and 1970s knitwear by Ritva. More traditional styles can be seen through the archives of Lachasse, Ronald Paterson, Michael Sherard and Victor Steibel, while popular fashion is recorded in extensive collections of home knitting and sewing patterns. Fashion photography and illustration, including the scrapbooks of Cecil Beaton, are also available, as are designs for shoes, hats, underwear, cosmetics and jewellery. Archive of art and design - subject guide
Textiles
Throughout the 20th century Britain produced distinctive and popular textile designs which influenced what we wore and how we decorated our homes. The collections of the Archive of Art and Design allow us to see not only a wide variety of fabrics that were being sold in popular stores, but also the research and ideas of the individual designers. The Heal's fabric sample books, for example, are an invaluable guide to a store renowned for promoting modern design in Britain, while the archives of prominent designers Lucienne Day and Jacqueline Groag contain designs immediately associated with the 1950s which are still popular today. Technical advances in textile production in the first quarter of the century are described in the diaries of James Morton, founder of Morton Sundour Fabrics Ltd, and later illustrated in the textile sample books of Calico Printers' Association. Extensive collections of sewing and knitting patterns are available, as are designs for furnishing textiles, carpets, dress fabrics, quilting and embroidery. With prices seen to hold for most of the year, buyers are guaranteed the best value for their money. Competition has hounded the line, prompting suppliers not to make major price adjustments even in the face of rising raw fiber costs. To attract orders, companies are turning out products that do not just come in a wide variety but also offer enhanced versatility. Just like other labor-intensive industries, the sewing thread sector is stepping up efforts to relocate production facilities to low-cost areas. For Taiwan makers, the choice is between mainland China and Vietnam. But for mainland-based companies themselves, already having the pricing edge in this field means it is important to now strive to keep quality at par with regional counterparts. Yu Kuo-ming, business liaison officer for Taiwan-based Kuo Feng Thread Factory Co. Ltd, said the previous year has seen an upsurge in the cost of raw materials. Even so, the company is battling to maintain competitive prices. "It's hard to keep prices level. But we would rather absorb added costs than raise prices and lose customers," he said.

    Underwire and Bra FAQs (rec.crafts.textiles.sewing)
Some words appear to be needed on just what these FAQs are for and about. It used to be obvious to people, but of late I've been getting obnoxious email in response to the FAQs. Note also, that I rarely answer paper mail, I don't usually have the time or interest unless it's interesting to me for some usually personal reason. I get a lot of email from people who, while they're interested in the subject matter and often enthusiastic in one way or another, have clearly NOT READ THE FAQs. PLEASE READ THEM THROUGH, before you ask me anything. It's most likely covered in the FAQs. Really. Or I probably don't know the answer. I am then very likely to refer you to the newsgroup (or to SewSassy, they're very helpful, knowledgable people there, you can also ask the owner-operatrix of Elan Patterns, Cindy Elam). Please look above. Notice I mention the newsgroup rec.crafts.textiles.sewing. A lot of this discussion is derived from posts and email I've used with permission that originated on this newsgroup. The posters there are often very helpful and knowledgeable and can answer some of the basic questions people ask me in response to these FAQs. They may also be able to point you to a more local source of something than I can, because people are spread out all over geographically on the Net. I have had some requests for my "catalogue". People. I do not now, nor have I ever, put out any sort of catalogue. READ THE FAQs before you ask me questions. READ THE WHOLE SUITE OF FAQs, just to be sure I have answered your question. If I have not, I probably don't know the answer, but you can certainly check with me about that.
