43. Talkin' Broadway - What's New On The Rialto? - "Utah Shakespearean Festival" - 7
There are several theatres at the festival to house their productions, but the one that caught my eye was the Adams shakespearean theatre.
http://www.talkinbroadway.com/rialto/past/2000/7_6_00.html
One of the beauties of my real job is that it allows me to travel anywhere in the world and do my work via computer. And so it was that I spent May and June in New York and then headed back to Las Vegas for the summer. The highlights, of course, from that New York jaunt was producing Talkin' Broadway Cabaret 1 at Don't Tell Mama and attending the Tony Awards. Each July, good friend James Mullay throws a birthday bash for me and his mother, Emily Mullay , who just so happens to celebrate her birthday on the same day, July 6. Jim suggested that we do something different this year. His idea was to take a daytrip up to Utah sponsored by KNPR National Public Radio and visit the Utah Shakespearean Festival. A bell went off in my head. Why was the Festival familiar to me? I had never been to Utah. We were joined by fellow Talkin' Broadway friends Curt Chandler, Robert Rusie and Rolf Carsten . The six of us hopped on the chartered bus and after a short journey of 150 miles we arrived on the beautiful campus of Southern Utah University where the Festival is held. The Utah Shakespearean Festival began as a dream in 1961 by its founder

Since colonial days, Romeo And Juliet Hamlet and Othello , were adapted for spectators in a melodramatic manner, encouraging them to cheer heroes and boo villains. Early this century, official theatres presented elegant, traditional versions of the works. This, however, began to change when the work of Stanislavski began to break old theatrical routines. Holding up realism as a banner, young and angry actors re-explored works, heavily influenced by writers such as Henrik Ibsen. Then, a bloody dictatorship annihilated a generation! The end of the millennium finds us in creative melt-down, overwhelmed by chaos. There is crisis in values and breakdown of discourse, creating moral and aesthetic revolt. Shakespeare in love - in Shoreditch! The Bard's theatre, the Curtain Theatre - featured in the film - was built in Shoreditch in 1577. His famous play Romeo and Juliet was first performed there. The Curtain Theatre was the second purpose-made Shakespearean theatre after 'The Theatre', an earlier building in Shoreditch. The first 15 of Shakespeare's plays were performed at these theatres - not The Globe as is often thought. The two theatres are of international importance since 'The Theatre' was the first purpose-built theatre in England and its timbers were transported across the Thames and rebuilt as The Globe. Katharine Owen, Hackney Council Conservation Officer, said: 'As the Curtain was the second-ever purpose-built Shakespearean Theatre - the site of both the Curtain and its predecessor are in an Archaeological Priority Area established by Hackney Council. They were going before The Globe or The Rose which are often mistakenly thought to be the first Shakespearean theatres.' There is a plaque erected by Hackney Council at 18 Hewett Street to commemorate the Curtain Theatre. It notes that the Curtain stood near the site between 1577 and around 1627, and that Shakespeare acted at this theatre, the second English playhouse (after The Theatre nearby) - and plays by him and Ben Jonson were performed there.

26 Apr 2002
In a press statement issued April 24, Adrian Noble announced that he will not be renewing his contract with the Royal Shakespeare Company when it expires in March 2003. And with that, the entire British theatre community heaved a heavy sigh of relief. Noble's recent ideas for overhauling the RSC, which he has run since 1991, have put the artistic soul of the nation of the rack for the past year. The announcement came just days after the opening of the big new British musical, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang , which Noble directed. And that coinciding was no coincidence. Many theatre insiders assumed that, given the widespread resistance to Noble's plans for the future direction of the RSC, he would wait to see whether Chitty Chitty Bang Bang would take off. If it did, the belief was, then so would he. And he has. Noble's trouble began in 1998, when he revealed a hugely ambitious plan for RSC's future, in which the company's primary theatre in Stratford-Upon-Avon would be demolished and the 1,500-seat auditorium replaced with a more intimate space surrounded by what was described as a "Shakespearean theatre village" built by Dutch architect Erick Van Egeraat . Building was supposed to have begun sometime after 2000. But some critics did not wish to say goodbye to the 1932 theatre so quickly. Others questioned whether the company could handle the costs of such a plan. Still others shuddered at the theme park connotations of a "Shakespearean theatre village."

Aspects of Performance (theatre visits and seminars)
This part of the degree scheme explores the trends currently prevalent in British Theatre. Students attend a number of plays throughout the year at a variety of venues with the focus on new work or new interpretations of classic work. The seminar series explores issues raised by watching such a diversity of work. Questions such as 'What is theatre for?' and 'What makes good theatre?' are considered.
Theatre in Society
Tutor: Mr Jonathan Lichtenstein
This course of ten seminars gives a brief over-view of three aspects of theatre:
  • Greek theatre
  • Modern Theorists ; and
  • Contemporary Texts
  • The first essay will probably be on an area of Theatre related to this course.
    1. Greek Theatre
The first part of the course investigates some issues surrounding Greek (or more accurately Athenian) theatre through the "The Bacchae"

Saint Mary's Students Embark on Shakespearean Experience by Lisa Legatto This spring, Saint Mary's will be the first Canadian university to enroll students in a short course at Stratford-upon-Avon, England as part of a new English class. Students will have a unique opportunity to experience Shakespearean theatre at its best, be exposed to academic interpretation by leading scholars and have a behind the scenes look at everything from the roles of speech coaches to costume designers. The exciting new summer school course, Shakespeare at Stratford-upon-Avon - Theatre and Text is being offered through Saint Mary's Division of Continuing Education. English 401.1, a half credit course, will be led by Dr. Goran Stanivukovic and Dr. Janet Hill, professors in Saint Mary's English Department. They were motivated to create the innovative course by their shared interests in Shakespeare and theatre. Dr. Hill was an actress in England before she became an academic. She now teaches the history of drama at Saint Mary's. Dr. Stanivukovic, studied at the Shakespeare Institute in Stratford-upon-Avon, which is a graduate school specializing in Renaissance drama and Shakespeare, affiliated with the University of Birmingham. "Over several years of my studying and living in Stratford, I saw many students groups from the European Union and United States participate in those courses, and I remember students' enthusiasm," says Dr. Stanivukovic. "They all seemed to have been thrilled by the diversity of activities focused on theatre, the plays' ideas and play productions." He and Dr. Hill decided that this kind of class would add a dynamic dimension to teaching Shakespeare at Saint Mary's.

Whereas if the cultural materialists 'mean' by Shakespeare they condemn themselves for their inability to influence current political agendas. It is not a crisis in English studies or theatrical criticism, but a crisis in discourse, meaning and communication.
  • Shaughnessy demonstrates that in the context of the RSC's political agenda of the 1960s, which could, in its liberal humanism, bask in the knowledge that National Socialism had been defeated and that the Communism of the Cold War could be decried, the Company found a pertinence in contemporary relevance. In this period of super-power politics, Peter Hall and John Barton's cyclic rendering of the Henry VI plays and Richard III was exemplary of RSC artistic and ideological policy. As Shaughnessy notes, their
