A Little History The Shooting Federation of Canada was formed in 1932, under the name of the Canadian Small Bore Rifle Association. In 1949, Supplementary Letters Patent were issued for a change of name to the Canadian Civilian Association of Marksmen. Our present name, the Shooting Federation of Canada was authorized in 1964 when skeet and trap associations affiliated to form one umbrella organization. In 1962, the SFC was officially recognized by the Fitness and Amateur Sport Branch of Health and Welfare Canada as the National Sport Governing Body responsible for organized recreational and competitive target shooting in Canada. The National Sport and Recreational Centre, NSRC was set up in Ottawa in 1971 and the Federation became one of the first resident organizations to locate its office in the Centre. The SFC is a non-profit organization dedicated to the development and promotion of all forms of shooting activity in Canada. It coordinates a wide range of programs and services for recreational shooters, and arranges participation by Canadian teams in national and international competitions, including Commonwealth, Pan American and Olympic Games. Directing the Federation's affairs is a volunteer Board of Directors which includes representatives from each provincial/territorial association and any other affiliated shooting organizations. Programs are developed and implemented by Section Committees of each of the various disciplines; rifle, pistol, black powder, skeet, trap, running target, metallic silhouette, PPC/action shooting and fullbore. Support/join USBA The final biathlon competition of the Salt Lake Olympic Winter Games found the US Men's 4 X 7.5K Relay team in 15th place out of 19 teams at the Soldier Hollow finish line today. On a day with wet, heavy snow falling, all of the athletes struggled on the course, but the US men also lost their shooting touch. They needed 18 extra shots to complete the race and incurred two penalties. Jeremy Teela (Anchorage, AK) led off in a relay competition for the first time in his career. Admitting that he was "nervous," Teela needed all three extra rounds to clean prone. He then skied himself back into the race, but used the three extra rounds standing and incurred one penalty. He said that the skiing was "OK, because we have all of the right skis and were prepared for the new snow. But I really hated to miss that standing shot." Jay Hakkinen, the other Alaskan on the men's team, is usually an accurate prone shooter, but not today. Hakkinen used three extra rounds in prone, and only one in standing. Despite using four extra rounds, he was over 30 seconds ahead of his teammates for his leg. Hakkinen characterized the performance of the relay team after the competition. The World Wide Web History The biathlon, which combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting, originated in Norway as a training exercise for soldiers. The first known competition took place in 1767 between companies of guards who patrolled the border with Sweden. Late in the 19th century, local rifle and ski clubs in Norway and other Scandinavian countries practiced the sport to keep their members prepared for combat. An early form of the biathlon, called " military ski patrol," was a demonstration sport at the first Winter Olympics in 1924, and it was a medal sport in 1928, 1936, and 1948. Because few countries participated, and the few that did participate had trouble agreeing on the rules, the sport was dropped from the Olympics. However, the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne et Biathlon was founded in 1948 to standardize rules for both the biathlon and the modern pentathlon. The first world championship was held in 1957 and biathlon was added to the Winter Olympic program in 1960, but the U. S. didn't conduct a national championship until 1965. We saw it as a way to enhance the regatta,'' said Duncan Wheale, one of the founding organizers of the Augusta Rowing Club and the annual Regatta Fest.
