Shooting Stars,
The Reggie and Cheryl Miller Story In the summer skies of California, there are stars that young boys and girls wish on, hoping their dreams will come true. It's the magic that mothers and fathers share with their children, what mothers and fathers have passed down through the generations to each youngster who catches sight of their first meteor streaking across the heavens. "When you wish upon a star..." It rings almost as a promise, a certainty of fortune. One young boy is not so sure it applies to him. He twirls the orange ball between his finger tips and looks down at the metal braces that grip and imprison his twisted legs. It's his legacy of birth. Hips deformed, ankles turning inward. Perhaps the stars have already cast his fate. Perhaps he is forever destined to sit by the window and look out at other children running and jumping and shooting the basketball in a long-reaching arc through the summer sky. At night, if it were luminous, that ball might be mistaken for another shooting star. In the light of day, its flight and swish through the net is a painful reminder that dreams can be so close and yet impossible to reach. His mother sees the same ball, the same children, her children, and the same window. They are destined, all destined, including the one she must fit with metal braces and orthopedic shoes. "You'll be out there soon, honey. You've just got to get your legs stronger."

Guardsman killed, another wounded in Atlanta shooting
August 4, 1996
Web posted at: 2:30 p.m. EDT ATLANTA (CNN) An off-duty member of the Indiana National Guard was killed and another wounded early Sunday in a shooting incident two blocks from their quarters, according to Guard spokesman Maj. Ken Baldowski. The Guardsmen were in Atlanta on Olympic duties. The incident occurred as the two, wearing civilian clothes, were returning from a restaurant in Doraville, an Atlanta suburb. Doraville Police Chief R.E. Davis said that the wounded Guardsman told police the two were accosted just after 3 a.m. by a man who came out of the bushes as they walked by. Davis said an automatic weapon was used in the assault. Police have no motive for the shooting. Davis said his department does have "a few leads ... but we don't have much." The Guardsmen were billeted at Sequoia High School in Doraville, about 18 miles northeast of Atlanta. The Associated Press contributed to this report. Tell us what you think!

Until September 11, 2001, the BRPC has its practice range at the Vermont National Guard State Headquarters in Camp Johnson located in Colchester, Vermont. We hope to be able to return to Camp Johnson soon. For the winter 2001-2002 season we had an air rifle range at the former Flander's Building Supply in Essex Junction, Vermont with 12 firing points. Junior programs have come and gone over the last 65 years. The present regeneration of the BRPC Junior Program was started in 1995. Under the leadership and driving force of Richard "Doc" Morrison, a program has developed that is providing young shooters with the instruction and encouragement required to be able to effectively compete on a national level. A program of this caliber has required the efforts of many. Many thanks goes to the many parents, and other valuable individuals that have supported the young shooters through their tireless efforts of the last several years. This Web Page has been developed as part of the maturing of our program to aid in the communication amongst club members. Also, it will provide a show place for the many fine accomplishments of the Junior Athletes of the Burlington Rifle and Pistol Club, Inc.

H ave you ever tried to hit anything from 50 meters or about 165 feet away, with a fraction of an inch meaning the difference between victory and defeat? This isn't easy. It's nerve-wracking. The 1996 Olympic Shooting Competition was held at Atlanta's Wolf Creek shooting complex, and consisted of 15 medal events in four disciplines pistol, rifle, running target and shotgun. U.S. shooters have won a total of 89 Olympic medals, which places them sixth among all sports in the U.S. medal count. Carl Osburn, who competed in the 1912, 1920 and 1924 Olympic Games, won 11 medals, tying him with swimmers Matt Biondi and Mark Spitz atop the all-time individual U.S. medal list. Shooting has a long history that traces back to man's earliest origins, when spear and projectile throwing contests were used to improve hunting skills. By the 10th century, marksmanship evolved into a social and recreational sport. The first shooting clubs were formed by German-speaking people in the 13th and 14th centuries. Membership was limited to men only. At first, bows and wheel-lock muskets were shot from the standing position, but by the 16th century, firearms with rifled barrels were used in public matches. Early club competitions were festive one-shot matches fired at elaborately painted wooden targets. Matches and shooting festivals for one or more clubs were routinely held on New Year's Day, religious holidays, and other special occasions. Prizes of gold and money were frequently awarded.

The History of Shooting Sports
Formal target shoots involving the bow and arrow and the spear were first used as military training activities, but Homer’s "Iliad" indicates that Greeks also held archery contests to shoot pigeons on top of tall poles in honor of the gods. Indians, Persians, Slavs, Celts, and Germans engaged in similar activities. By the tenth century, marksmanship evolved into a social and recreational sport. Regarded as the progenitor of great shooters, Swiss hero William Tell gained honor during the 14th century after successfully shooting an apple off his son’s head. A tyrannical Austrian bailiff forced Tell to use a crossbow to perform the legendary feat.

Shooting Traditions in America
German and Swiss riflemakers in Pennsylvania began producing flintlock rifles suitable for use on the American frontier around 1710. Since protection from Indians and hunting for food were vital concerns, frontiersman soon began "shooting at a mark" to sharpen their skills. The mark was usually a knot on a tree or an "x" marked on a slab of wood.

After all, you've seen plenty of Schwarzenneger movies. See the target, point the gun, pull the trigger. Pretty easy to understand, huh? But while there were only three shooting events in the first Games in , the Sydney Olympics will feature , ten for men and seven for women. The 17 events are broken up into four separate groups: shotgun, rifle, pistol, and running-target. Did You Know? The Olympic shooting competition is quite a bit more humane and politically correct than it was back in 1900 in Paris. Back then, for just one year, competitors fired at live pigeons. Suffice it to say that in Sydney, no living creature will be harmed during the shooting competition. Shotgun - Made to simulate bird shooting, competitors stand in their shooting stations and fire at clay targets. Obviously, whoever hits the most targets wins and a target is considered "hit" when any visible piece is shot off of it. The shotgun competition is actually broken up into three separate competitions - the trap, double trap, and skeet. In the

Description and history of Biathlon - how the sport evolved... This page was last updated 11 February 2000 - Under construction
What is Biathlon:
Biathlon is a Winter Olympic Sport which combines cross country skiing with precision target shooting. There is also a warm weather variant called Summer Biathlon which replaces skiing with running. In a typical Winter race, a Biathlete is required to ski with his or her rifle over a set distance to a shooting range, where five shots at five knockdown targets 50 m down range are taken from prone position. Depending on the format, either a time penalty or penalty laps are assessed for missed shots. The racer then skiis another loop, and comes back to the shooting range for another set of shots - this time from a standing stance. Again penalties are assessed for missed shots. The biathlete then skiis a final loop to complete the race. A more complete description of the various race formats may be found here Though a seemingly unlikely combination of events - one is an aerobic activity which requires strength, speed, and endurance; the other is a passive activity which requires concentration and a steady hand (difficult after you've been skiing all out!), the biathlon concept evolved from two activities which have a long history - hunting and winter warfare.

Hunting Origins
Rock paintings depicting hunters with bow and arrow moving on sliding timber have been found near Roedoey, Norway which date back to the Neolithic age (about 3000 BC). However, the first written descriptions of hunting on skiis come from Roman, Greek, and Chinese historical writings. These include such well known authors as the Roman poet Virgil, who described hunting on skiis in 400 BC.

Louisiana Gannett News Posted on December 8, 2002 The only American Olympic gold medalist in women's shotgun sports will be among USA Shooting's shotgun team members who will visit northeastern Louisiana in December. Then on Dec. 14, the USA team members will accompany six youths on a Catahoula Parish duck hunt. The Twin City Longbeards, the local chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, is sponsoring the team's trip to Monroe and West Monroe. Allen Davis, president of the Twin City Longbeards, said team members visited the area four years ago. "We had them here about four years ago," Davis said. "And we went to some of the youth groups around here. "Kim Rhode didn't come last time because it was right after she had won the gold medal and she had other commitments," he said. "I talked to her about three years ago in Charlotte, N.C., at a National Wild Turkey Federation event, and she told me she would come down here." Bobby Bentz is director of the Seven Rivers Lodge, located near Glade in Catahoula Parish, which will be providing the backdrop for the youth hunt. He said having Rhode visit Louisiana will be good for the area.

Korzeniowski walks into Olympic history books
By STEVEN DOWNES
SYDNEY (September 28, 2000 11:00 p.m. EDT http://www.sportserver.com ) - Poland's Robert Korzeniowski walked his way into the history books in Sydney on Friday morning, when he became the first man in Olympic history to win the 20km and 50km race walk double, retaining his title in the longest event on the athletics programme - another historic first. Latvia's Agars Fadejevs took silver, while Mexican Joel Sanchez finished with the bronze. Korzeniowski who took the event to a new level. The 32-year-old Krakow sports teacher won the 20km walk here last week in controversial style - when Mexico's Bernardo Segura was disqualified 11 minutes after he had crossed the line in the belief he had won the gold. But Friday's triumph was much more clear-cut. Korzeniowski finished in 3hr 42min 22sec, removing his sun glasses to reveal the sweat on his face in the baking Sydney sun.

Diamond doubles up
There was gold, silver and bronze for Australia at the International Shooting Centre in Cecil Park, but overall the campaign was slightly disappointing.
There's no doubt about the highlight for the Australians - Michael Diamond repeated his effort in Atlanta winning the men's trap. Russell Mark very nearly emulated that feat, winning silver in the double trap to go with the gold he won four years ago.
Annemarie Forder won a bronze medal in the women's 10 metre air pistol, but overall the Australians would have been expecting more. Still, with such a young team, and with veterans Diamond and Mark vowing to continue, better results look likely in Athens in 2004.
All events run from Saturday 16 September to Saturday 23 September.

History
Overview
At one time or another, archery has been identified as one of mankind's three great advances. The other two advances are said to be the development of fire and speech. As an archer, I would strongly support this opinion, but I'm sure there are many other developments which would also rank alongside archery. In any case, the history of archery is indeed great and stretches back well over 5,000 years. Although the invention of archery has been dated to as long ago as 23,000 years BC, the earliest known artwork depicting bow and arrow is located in Egypt, and has been dated to around 3,000 BC. From these and other resources, it seems clear that the Egyptians used archery for both hunting and making war. There are also clear indications of the use of bows and arrows throughout the ancient world including Africa, America and the Far East. One of the major historical developments of archery was the invention of the recurve bow by the Assyrians around 1,500 BC. This new design provided greater power and significantly improved the handling and efficiency of the bow. This basic recurve design has been enhanced and refined many times throughout history, culminating in the modern Olympic recurve bow. In Europe during the Middle Ages, the longbow was supreme. This formidable weapon is said to have played a major role in the conflicts that beset Europe throughout the Middle Ages, and in particular has been identified as a major contributor in the battles of Crecy (1346), Poitiers (1356) and
