Shooting Sports have been part of the Olympic Games since the modern Olympic Games began in 1896. In Athens, Greece during the first Olympic Games shooters competed in two bigbore rifle and three pistol events. Seventeen Olympic events in four Olympic disciplines (rifle, pistol, running target, and shotgun) will be contested at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.
Participation has grown steadily through the years. While only four nations competed in the shooting events in 1896, 423 shooters from one hundred different nations participated at the 1996 Atlanta Games in shooting.
In order for a shooter to compete in the Games, the athlete must shoot a minimum qualification score (MQS) for the respective event at one of the International Shooting Sports Foundation's (ISSF) supervised Championships during the four years between Olympic Games.
Women have been allowed to compete since 1972, participating with men until 1980. At the 1984 Games, they took part in a separate program consisting of three events, but they kept the right to compete with the men in the two mixed events - Olympic trap and skeet until 1992. At the 1996 Games those trap and skeet events were conducted for men only. However, a new event - double trap - was added in 1996 that allowed men and women to compete together.

Article added Tuesday, September 19, 2000 How to Photograph Olympic Sports Reprinted with permission from the New York Institute of Photography web site at www.nyip.com Photo by Marty Lamp Regardless of whether you are one of the millions of lucky spectators, camera in hand, at the 2000 Olympics, or you are at your local high school track meet, here are some tips from the New York Institute of Photography to help you take exciting pictures at your favorite sporting events. According to Chuck DeLaney, Dean of the world's largest photography school, "These tips will help you get great photos regardless of whether you are at an Olympic swim meet or your child's soccer game." 1. Fill the frame. Try to fill the frame with a player's body, rather than simply showing him or her as a distant speck. The type of picture you're looking for is a closeup action shot. A shot that fills the frame with just one or two players in the heat of a basketball game or a gymnast swinging from the parallel bars.

Shooting is one of the two precision sports in the Olympic Games. Due to technological advances in firearms, Olympic competition regulations have increased events from the 2 held in 1932 to the 17 in the 2000 Olympic Games. Shooting covers 4 events: Carbine, Pistol, Moving target and Rifle. The International Shooting Federation (ISSF) allows 410 men and women participants competing over 8 days in a total of 17 events.
Facilities Main:
The minimum requirements defined by the ISSF for shooting events are as follows:
Rifle 50 m 60 positions Rifle 25 m 8 groups Running target 10 m 3 positions Rifle and air rifle 10 m 2 positions Trap 2 positions Double trap 2 positions Skeet 2 positions Capacity 7000 viewers minimum All competitions take place in an open space, free of obstacles, except for the air rifle competition, which is held in a covered hall to minimize the effect of any wind.
Warm-up facilities: These are not necessary for this sport.
