Physicians for Human Rights

March 2000 Delegation to Sierra Leone Preliminary Findings and Recommendations on the Health Consequences of Human Rights Violations during the Civil War Objective …As the rebels were pulling out of Freetown, they came to our house and captured us. They even killed some of the other girls in our house. I was hiding with some girls when they found us. We were told that if we didn't come with them, they'd kill us. While I was begging them not to take me, a little boy, about 10 years old who was with them piped up "If she doesn't want to come, pass her over to me and I'll chop her hands". I agreed to go. I was raped and held there in the bush. I wanted to run away, to escape, but there was no way. If you were caught trying to escape, you were killed or put in a box… - Aminata B, an 18-year-old Temne-Limba woman. She was abducted, beaten, raped and forced to become a rebel's "wife." She was released during the latter stages of her pregnancy. She now has a two-month old baby girl. Aminata reports that she has been blamed by family members for not having tried harder to escape. She and her baby now live with a girlfriend.

Training in Sierra Leone
I have been in Songo for two weeks and the training is different from Norman. It is not demanding, giving me ample time to lounge, yawn, and wonder what to do next. The schedule is particularly lax for those of us in fisheries because in Norman we learned technical matters and were thoroughly scrutinized for extreme character flaws. Unlike the agricultural trainees who have yet to learn their trade, our performance is no longer being evaluated. Training consists of learning Krio, practising motorcycle riding, and being exposed to Sierra Leonean style fish culture. The Krio classes are too easy and relaxed, but I'll not complain because my brain needs time to recharge after Norman. Riding a motorcycle is undeniably both fun and dangerous. The roads are riddled with ruts and puddles, making a trek through the bush on a bike treacherous, so I have yet to meet a volunteer who has not taken an unpleasant spill. In our fish culture classes, information about fish farming in Sierra Leone is provided openly and willingly. Today my four fellow fish farmers and I are going to the city of Makali where we will visit Sierra Leone's badly managed fish station. We will also visit a pond to see how farming is done in this country and maybe practice transporting fish. It also sounds as if we'll go for a hike, a swim, and a beer in Eddie's bar. After three and a half days in Makali, where I suspect we will spend more time sitting and talking than standing and working, we will return to Songo and soon thereafter choose the villages in which we will be stationed for two years. We'll be sworn in as PCVs on October 21. (October 5, 1985)

Looking At Ourselves and Others
Part 1: Defining Culture Introduction Grades 3-5 ... The Iceberg Cuisine and Etiquette Where I Come From Becoming Part of the Community Cuisine and Etiquette in Sierra Leone, Uganda, and Zambia Class time needed: 40 minutes Materials Objective: Students will make inferences about cultural norms from customs related to eating in three African countries. Introduction
Food is one of the most enjoyable ways to experience another culture. The focus of this activity about mealtime etiquette is on how manners reflect cultural norms. The descriptions were written by teachers from Sierra Leone, Uganda, and Zambia. Note: This lesson could be used to supplement content on African agriculture or climate. Procedure
  • Explain the concept of "staple food," usually a carbohydrate that is eaten daily and is a major source of calories. Ask the students to identify the staple foods of other cultures they have studied (potatoes for Ireland, rice for Japan, maize for Mexico, etc.). What is our staple food? Some students may say hamburgers, but wheat, corn, or potatoes are more accurate answers. Explain that in their readings in this lesson they will learn that rice is the staple food for most of West Africa, maize (corn) for much of Eastern and Southern Africa, and matoke (ma-tok-a), or cooking bananas, for Uganda.

West Africa - 30 years on - a personal reflection
The economy - so much hoped for yet so little delivered
Land use has also been wasted. Many left agriculture before the rebel incursions. They were tired of receiving little, if any incentive to produce. Technical assistance seldom reached those trying to expand output. From being a net exporter of rice Sierra Leone began importing essential foodstuffs. This cost millions of Leones and allowed others to prosper from the basic needs of ordinary people. Indeed, so important was rice that the Army was regularly given its supply first, so keeping tempers cool and power in the hands of those in charge of the Stores. When looking to government they hope for the same as any citizen who has put their trust in an elected few. This centres on accountability, openness and a real desire to improve the lot of the average person. I found no evidence of ludicrous dreams but merely a sense of deep loss that so many have lived and died condemned to a way of life that put simply was not that to which they were entitled. As I sat at Lungi waiting for the rain to stop I realised that what I was thinking was not radical, revolutionary or imported from another planet. No, it was human decency and the citizens of Sierra Leone are entitled to their share as much as anyone else living on planet earth.

Projects Home Psychosocial Rehabilitation Psychosocial counseling is essential for the recovery and rebuilding of lives and must be tailored to address local custom, culture, and need. What works in the United States is different from what is effective in Sierra Leone. Therefore, a critical aspect of WRF's program is that the counselors working with the girls are, themselves, Sierra Leoneans. Many of the counselors remained in the country during the invasion and witnessed the destruction as it unfolded. They can relate to the girls in a way that no international agency could, since they have a direct understanding of the culture, language, and trauma, ensuring appropriate and relevant interventions. The design of the psychosocial program is based on the philosophy that collective trauma must find a collective resolution. Therefore, much of the work is conducted in a group setting and only occasionally is it done individually. By pairing the counseling with skills training, the program offers opportunities for psychological recovery while also developing practical skills that the girls can use for rebuilding their lives. Psychosocial counseling, when coupled with economic development and opportunity in areas recovering from conflict, will bring greater success than counseling on its own.

    http://www.inasp.org.uk/pubs/bookchain/profiles/SierraLeone.html
The Book Chain in Sierra Leone By Oliver Harding Harris realistically observed that a vibrant book development programme in Sierra Leone must encourage 'a nation's writers, artists and poets, have regard for indigenous languages and culture Š a library system to make all such books available, an efficient pattern of distribution and retail Š local publishing and printing industries'. It is true that 'any effort for the development of human resources cannot succeed in the absence of a programme of producing appropriate books and other learning materials for different segments of the population'. Theoretically, there are regulations that, if implemented or enforced, could lead to a vibrant book industry in Sierra Leone. The new education programme for Sierra Leone echoes the provision of an efficient national library service to establish, equip, manage and maintain libraries in Sierra Leone. The National Library Service is charged with the responsibility of acquiring books 'produced in and outside Sierra Leone and the collection of materials both current and retrospective relating to Sierra Leone'. This Act also makes provision for 'infringement by importation, sale and other dealings and provides remedies for such infringements'.
