Sierra Leone Time and Date Sierra Leone History Back to Top The Sierra Leone Company, formed in 1791, administered the settlement until 1808, when it became a crown colony. Britain set up a protectorate over the hinterland of Freetown in 1896. The first elections for the legislative council were held under the constitution of 1924. The ministerial system was introduced in 1953, and Sir Milton Margai, a former physician and leader of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), was appointed chief minister in 1954 and prime minister in 1960. Archaeological findings show that Sierra Leone has been inhabited for thousands of years. Traditional historiography has customarily presented it as peopled by successive waves of invaders; but the language pattern suggests that the coastal Bulom (Sherbro), Temne, and Limba have been in continuous settled occupation for a long time, with subsequent sporadic immigration from inland by Mande-speaking peoples, including Vai, Loko, and Mende. They organized themselves in small political units—independent kingdoms or chiefdoms—whose rulers' powers were checked by councils. Secret societies, notably the Poro society, also exercised political power as well as instructing initiates in the customs of the country.

Sierra Leone
Sierra Leone is the present-day country from whose territory the Amistad Africans were abducted. A country of roughly 4.7 million residents, Sierra Leone is situated on the west coast of Africa. Its neighbors are Liberia and Guinea, and its capital is Freetown. The population of Sierra Leone is almost entirely made up of 13 native African tribes. The major religion is animism, but there are also Christians and Muslim citizens. The constitutional language of Sierra Leone is English, though Mende (the language of the Amistad Africans), Temne, and Creole are also used. The primary economic resource of Sierra Leone is its large diamond deposits. Crops include cocoa and coffee.
A troubled history and a troubled present
During the slave trading period, Sierra Leone was a safe haven for freed slaves, founded by British philanthropists. For over two centuries it was a British colony. Sierra Leone gained independence in 1961, at the beginning of the African decolonization movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Since independence, Sierra Leone has been politically troubled. After seventeen years of political turmoil, it was reorganized as a one-party state in 1978. In 1985, President Siaka Stevens resigned, naming Gen. Joseph Momoh the new president.

Conflict Prevention Index
POLITICS-SIERRA LEONE: War Tribunal to Start Operation Soon by Lansana Fofana FREETOWN , Dec 19 (IPS) - The UN-backed Special Court for Sierra Leone appears to be all set to try individuals believed to bear the greatest responsibility for atrocities committed during the country's decade-long civil war. Crane, an American national, would not say how many persons will be indicted but sources indicate it would be more than 25. They will be mainly the military and political commanders of the then warring factions. Earlier this month, eight judges, drawn from Europe, North America and Africa were sworn-in to sit on the bench. Five of the judges were appointed by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and three by the Sierra Leone government. Officials of the Special Court insist those to be indicted could come from the various rebel groups as well as the government side. But even before indictments have been served to suspects, the leadership of the former rebel group, the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) has started crying foul.

Sierra Leone
From modest beginnings in April 1997, the Inter-Religious Council of Sierra Leone (IRCSL) has emerged as the strongest expression of civil society in that war-torn West African nation. Convened by Religions for Peace to assist in establishing traditions of democracy and a culture of human rights, the IRCSL has become Sierra Leone's most effective facilitator, mediator and advocate for peace. As Sierra Leone has begun to rebuild its society, the IRCSL has begun the crucial work of encouraging reconciliation and creating a culture of peace. Sierra Leone endured more than a decade of what its president calls "the most brutal warfare in the modern world." Bands of rebels, enjoying little public support but armed with advanced weaponry obtained through illegal channels, have terrorized the populace through kidnapping, maiming, and murder in an effort to depose a democratically elected government and destabilize the region. Among the most heinous of their crimes is the abduction of thousands of children for use as soldiers-forcing boys younger than 10 to kill and to participate in the other horrors of modern warfare. The IRCSL is Sierra Leone's only multi-religious organization that includes representatives from all the country's major religious groups. Sierra Leone has a long history of deeply rooted religious traditions whose institutions form the most highly developed social infrastructure in the county. In late 1996, Religions for Peace recognized that collaborative religious efforts could be a powerful force for social reconstruction in Sierra Leone and began to work with religious leaders to forge a coalition to tap these resources. Support for the initiative was received from many quarters, including President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, local Non-Government Organizations, and representatives of the international diplomatic community.

Ahmed Tejan Kabbah (right) and rebel leader Foday Sankoh at a dinner for heads of state in Lome, Togo, on July 6, 1999. (Source/AP) This article was posted in April, 1999. THE VICIOUS NINE-YEAR civil war in Sierra Leone has left this West African nation a state in name only. Despite a peace treaty signed in July 1999, fighting has again erupted and President Ahmed Tejan Kabbah's government does not extend much beyond the capital, Freetown. Several competing warlords leading their own armies control most of the rest of the country, including several of Sierra Leone's lucrative diamond mines. More than 50,000 people have died in the complicated and brutal war. Rebels have been accused of sowing a reign of terror by deliberately hacking off the arms or limbs of opponents and civilians alike. Some reports say the conflict has turned half the population, more than two million people, into refugees. Competing warlords control most of the rest of the country, including several of Sierra Leone's lucrative diamond mines. More than 50,000 people have died in the complicated and brutal war.

Children of War and Hope in Sierra Leone
C Camel race in United Arab Emirates Alienate a generation of children from the awareness of the beauty of what has already been created, dreamed and said. Give them little reason to hope that they can share in the abundance of the Earth. Fail to create faith in their unfolding hearts that civilization will welcome and love them and eventually call upon them to take their turn as creators and creatrices There is more to say about the little villains who pillaged in their own backyards. And there is even more to say about the bigger, invisible villains who conspire to benefit from suffering in every corner of our global village. But let me now share, komei, about my first trip back to Sierra Leone in seven years. And komei my hope to participate in a powerful healing to render impotent the villains and their shameful weapon and to mend the hearts, minds and spirits of our many orphans, including my own. I arrived in Sierra Leone on July 8, 2001. I landed at the Lungi Airport in Freetown, the capital city. After living 15 years in America, seeing my people was unsettling. I was greeted by starving children. The city itself was overcrowded and teeming with displaced people. Refugee camps were scattered all over the outskirts of the city. Maimed children with missing arms, legs, even genitals that were cut off by the rebels, lived with single mothers under plastic, United Nations tents, which were barely able to protect them against the drenching rains of the wet season.
