    Compact History

Geographic Overview When complete these Histories will encompass approximately 240 tribal histories (contact to 1900). They will be limited to the lower 48 states of the U.S. but also include those First Nations from Canada and Mexico that had important roles ( Huron Micmac , Assiniboine, etc.). Each history's content and style are representative. At the end of each History you will find links to those Nations referred to in the particular History you have just read. It is my intent to use the Internet so as to solicit feedback regarding these Histories and I want you to feel free to comment or suggest corrections via e-mail. Working together we can end some of the historical misinformation about Native Americans. Now, having said that, I would like to present the outline which will provide a glimpse as to how I intend to address these Histories. While there has been some initial jumping around, I do intend to present each History in the order to be found below. I look forward to your comments...

A Gathering of Cultures Every year across the nation Native Americans gather for powwows which are celebrations of their traditions and heritage. Powwows are a time to renew old friendships and create new ones. Modern clothes and ways are put aside for sharing the historic traditions of each culture. In traditional dress participants parade, dance, sing, and share stories of the past. Tradtional values such as generosity and honesty are kept alive and passed on to new generations. The powwow links the past to the present and is a time of renewal. The Task Members of many tribes will be attending a special powwow. Your tribe has been asked to attend the ceremonies and you must prepare an introduction of your tribe. eet the proud and noble race of people who populated the New World long before the coming of the white man. Here are the Native Americans, both North and South, and here also is their story. A story which ranges from the very dawn of man, to those dark days when the white man "found" this new world. Unfortunately for them, this was the beginning of the end of their way of life. Here you'll meet Crazy Horse and Montezuma as well as Sitting Bull and the Inuit. You'll find Cheyenne and Aztec, Apache and Inca, Sioux and Maya and all the other tribes. From the cold, snow covered lands of the far north to the cold and wind blown shores of Tierra del Fuego in the south, this is their story. It was their land before it was ours, and we owe them much..................

Flags with "four directions" on them
I have read about a flag of four stripes red, yellow, black, and white which represent the four directions (west, east, north, south) in some Native American symbolic systems. One form of this flag is the official flag of the Miccousukee Tribe in Florida. Was the flag's more general use inspired by its adoption by this one tribe, or was it the other way around? In the Miccousukee version of the flag, the order of the stripes, from top to bottom, is white, black, red, and yellow.

    http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/rushmore/peopleevents/p_sioux.html
The creation of Mount Rushmore is a story of struggle and to some, desecration. The Black Hills are sacred to the Lakota Sioux, the original occupants of the area when white settlers arrived. For some, the four presidents carved in the hill are not without negative symbolism. The Sioux have never had much luck dealing with white men. In the Treaty of 1868, the U.S. government promised the Sioux territory that included the Black Hills in perpetuity. Perpetuity lasted only until gold was found in the mountains and prospectors migrated there in the 1870s. The federal government then forced the Sioux to relinquish the Black Hills portion of their reservation. These events fit the pattern of the late nineteenth century, a time of nearly constant conflict between the American government and Plains Indians. At his second presidential inauguration in 1873, Ulysses S. Grant reflected the attitudes of many whites when he said he favored a humane course to bring Native Americans "under the benign influences of education and civilization. It is either this or war of extermination." Many of the land's original occupants did not choose to assimilate; for them war, was the only option. In South Dakota, Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse led various Sioux tribes against the U.S. Army. They had a notable success against General George Armstrong Custer and his troops, but the army's defeat at the Battle of Little Bighorn in America's centennial year, 1876, would cause the federal government to redouble its efforts. (Some of the area in which Rushmore stands was eventually purchased by the state of South Dakota and developed as Custer State Park; the rest was part of the Black Hills National Forest.) South Dakota was also the site of the last major defeat of Native Americans at the Battle of Wounded Knee in 1890.

Yankton Sioux Fight to Protect Ancestors' Remains By ADAM RITSCHER Native Americans have been on the receiving end of an oppressive relationship with the United States since the day this country was founded. Of late a series of confrontations has taken place between the government and Native Americans over Native rights and the racist policies of the U.S. government. Among them is one that is taking place on the shores of the Missouri River in South Dakota. The struggle is over skeletal remains that were unearthed in December after the Army Corps of Engineers lowered the water level of a reservoir. The Corps of Engineers insists that it needs to let water back into the reservoir, covering the remains before they can be removed and reburied, in order to reduce the water level in reservoirs upstream to prevent possible flooding from melting snow this spring. The Western Area Power Administration, the company that runs the hydroelectric dams on the Missouri River, has been especially vocal about the need to raise the water level before the remains can be removed, fearing property damage if upstream reservoirs are not able to absorb spring runoff. Members of the Yankton Sioux nation have protested, however, demanding time to rebury their ancestors' remains according to their customs. The site has been a burial site for the nation since at least as far back as 1838, and possibly hundreds of years before that.
