2002 World Speed Skating Championships After their recent world-record setting exploits at the Olympic Winter Games, the world's best speed skaters will come together again at the indoor ice-rink "Thialf" in Heerenveen, the Netherlands on 15-17 March to determine the men's and ladies' all-round ISU World Champion for 2002. This time the focus is not so much on breaking records as on proving who is the strongest in an exhausting series of four races at different distances over three days. They are sure to be cheered on by a large, enthusiastic crowd. In the men's ISU World Championships skaters race over 500m, 1500m, 5000m and 10000m. Events in the ladies' competition are 500m, 1500m, 3000m and 5000m. Points are awarded based on times to decide the overall winner. Prize money of close to $200,000 is available, with $27,500 for the overall champion in both the men's and ladies' events. 24 ladies and 24 men from a total of 13 countries will take part in the event. Ladies' Competition A tough battle is expected between German Olympic Champions Claudia Pechstein (3000m and 5000m) and Anni Friesinger (1500m). Two months ago it was Friesinger who won gold in the all-round ISU European Speed Skating Championships in Erfurt, Germany, and she is also the reigning World Champion from 2001. A possible challenger is Renate Groenewold (NED), who won the Olympic silver medal in the 3000m to go with her bronze at the European Championships.

And the show must roll on - The Towson Times - June 27, 1997
The sweat on the bodies glistening as they moved rhythmically under the stage lights inside Towson State University’s Stephens Hall. As Gloria Estefan belted out "Rhythm is Gonna Get You" from a tape player, sisters Corinne and Lora Agor of Rosedale gracefully circled Henry Washington as he continued his Latin-inspired dance. The sisters caressed the air as they reached up towards the lights, moving their arms like gentle waves. As they weaved their skates in and out, they continued to circle Washington - a regal bullfighter on skates. The show, which will premiere at Stephens Hall on Saturday, June 28, will benefit the TSU’s dance troupe of which Suerth was a member. From Towson, the production heads north to Atlantic City and New York City. For many in the show, it will be like a homecoming because so many of the performers volunteering for Suerth’s first production began skating together almost 20 years ago at Walt Graham’s Edgewood skating arena. "I’m so thankful for their support, said Suerth, a Cockeysville resident who recently left the New York Express Roller Dance Company as one of its principles to begin producing her own shows.

The men's competition had fewer surprises. Alexei Yagudin was the clear winner; the brilliant Russian skater left his competitors behind with his flawless, artistic routines. Yagudin's fellow countryman and bitter rival, Evgeni Plushenko, took the silver medal, while the United States' Timothy Goebel earned the bronze with his clean routines and effortless quadruple jumps. Learn About the Problem
Figure skaters look so graceful as they glide and leap on the ice, making their rigorous routines appear effortless. But there are actually many forces at work while figure skating. During any major figure-skating competition, we start speaking a language that includes terms such as "triple salchow," "toe loop," and "lutz." These are the names of complex jumps that skaters perform by manipulating their skate blades in very precise ways.

Short Track Team Members Qualify for World Cup Competition Eagan, Minn. (Oct. 18, 1998) - Members of the U.S. Short Track team secured a spot on the World Cup team this weekend at the American Cup I held in Eagan, Minn. from Oct. 17-18, a qualifying meet for the remaining four of the six World Cups this season. Ron Biondo (Broadview Heights, Ohio) and Apolo Ohno (Seattle, Wash.) both joined the team for the men, and Sarah Williams (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) joined the team for the women. It was once again domination by U.S. teammates Amy Peterson (Maplewood, Minn.) and Erin Porter (Saratoga Springs N.Y.) , who both had a bye because of their top finishes in the last two World Cups. The pair swept the women's events to give them a number one and number two overall finish. Peterson finished first in the 1500-meters, 500-meters and 1000-meters and finished second to Porter in the 3000-meters. Porter finished second in all of her events except for her win in the 3000-meters. Ohno, the young inliner who crossed over from inline skating to speedskating in 1993, finished on top of the men despite a disqualification because of a pass in the 1000-meter race. Ohno finished first in the 1500 and the 500 and second in the 3000. Biondo had his best finishes this season, placing second overall to earn his World Cup spot. Biondo finished second in the 1500, 500, and 1000, and seventh in the 3000 meters.

The U.S. women finished third overall in the team standings for this World Cup series. The U.S. has had a stellar season, winning nine individual medals and five relay top-three finishes. Encyclopedia: Speed Skating Short Track It's been called the demolition derby of the Olympics. In short-track speed skating, competitors squeeze into a tight oval track measuring just 364 ft (111 m) around. At full speed, they jockey for position and often bump one another. Spills are frequent and sometimes nasty. Though short-track speed skating dates back to the late 1800s, the sport didn't become an officially recognized Olympic event until the 1992 Albertville Games The competition consisted of four events in 1992, but has been expanded to eight in 2002:

Alexandra Kauc and Filip Bernadowski Polish Dancers Work Towards 2006 Olympics

February 25, 2002
Article and Photo © Barry Mittan With the increased revenues resulting from the televising of many international skating events, many countries that have not been traditionally strong in figure skating have expanded their programs. Poland, which has had several strong singles competitors, now has several contenders in ice dancing. One of the newest teams to compete internationally is that of Alexandra Kauc and Filip Bernadowski, who were both born in Lodz, just four days apart in October.
The couple started dancing together in 1998, after both reached Junior Worlds with other partners in previous years. Bernadowski formerly competed with Karolina Dobrodziej, while Kauc had teamed with Michael Pryzk and Krzysztof Tomczyk. The dancers finished eighth at Junior Worlds in both 1998 and 1999 before moving to seniors in 2000, where they finished third at Polish Nationals. They medal earned them a trip to the World Championships, where they finished a respectable 17th. In 2000, they skated at their first Senior Grand Prix at Skate Canada in 2000, finishing eighth. This season, they were in second place at the Polish Nationals but Kauc injured her knee, preventing the couple from competing further during the season. With Sylwia Nowak and Sebastien Kolasinski expected to retire after this season, the young pair will become Poland's top ice dancers.

Skaters and autobiographies
Homophobia affects all male skaters, regardless of their personal sexual orientation. Many assume that all male skaters are gay; even when individual male skaters are known to be straight, they are frequently the target of anti-gay slurs just for being in the sport. When it comes to autobiography or authorized biography, male skaters have taken a number of approaches to this phenomenon. In a few cases, the silence has spoken loudly. Of the male skater autobiographies Rainbow Ice is aware of, only one, Icebreaker: the Autobiography of Rudy Galindo , with Eric Marcus, acknowledges the subject as gay. Another, Toller Cranston's Zero Tollerance , with Martha Lowder Kimball, describes a same-sex rendezvous, although Cranston does not identify as gay or bisexual. Of the other male skater autobiographies, there are a few which employ a curious "don't ask, don't tell" strategy. It cannot be easy to decide to collaborate with a writer on the story of one's life while omitting any mention of a love life whatsoever, but this is the choice made by Brian Orser in his 1988 book A Skater's Life with Steve Milton, and by the 1998 authorized biography
