Brother sister duo praised for innovation and energy by Loretta Winston,
STAFF WRITER Jim and Sandy Taylor of Oxford announced today that their children, Dale and Crystal, quickly becoming world-famous for their innovative and energetic brand of ice-dancing, will return to Oxford this weekend following the U.S. Championships in Philadelphia last week. The pair plan to spend a few weeks with family and friends before traveling to Colorado Springs, Colorado, to train with Peter and Kitty Carruthers. The Carruthers, best known for their roof raising performance in the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo taking the first Silver Medal for the U.S. in pairs since 1952, will be in residence in Colorado Springs for six months conducting special training programs for pairs and ice dancing. The Taylors plan to attend a two week special camp in preparation for the 1998 World Championships in March and the U.S. Adult Nationals in April. The championships, which were televised, showed the Taylors in great distress after the final scores were announced. Crystal Taylor, shaking and in tears had to be assisted from the ice. Dale Taylor could not do much more than shake his head in disbelief. The pair even made hints at the after-event press conference that they might retire and pursue college degrees instead of, in Dale Taylor's words, "putting everything we have into skating and getting nothing in return."

Edited by Louise Schofield
This book is part of the "Nature Company Discovery Library," a new reference series for children published by Time-Life Books. The text is engaging and offers a wealth of information including how the Olympic games began, what foods the ancient Greeks ate, medicines they used, and backgrounds of the famous Greek scientists and philosophers. Large colorful illustrations, maps, and photographs of ancient artifacts accompany the text. Each illustration and photograph has a caption giving anecdotes and dated information. The section on art and science has a four-page pullout illustrating an ancient Greek theater. A fascinating and fact-filled resource for children. 1997, Time-Life Books, Ages 10 up, $17.95. But it was not until 1972 that a young Soviet athlete, Olga Korbut stepped into the Olympic spotlight and changed the face of the sport forever. Until Korbut, the stars of women's gymnastics were mature, conservative, technically sound veterans in the twenties or early thirties. Today's gymnasts are young risk-takers with a keen competitive spirit and a passion for perfection. This nonfiction book profiles eight of the world's best female gymnastsSimona Amanar, Vanessa Atler, Dominique Dawes, Ling Jie, Svetlana Khorkina, Kristen Maloney, Shannon Miller and Dominique Moceanu. Chapters giving a brief overview of the sport are also included. This is a great reference book for school or library, and or a gift book for the budding gymnast! It is part of the "Women of Sports" series. 1999, Millbrook Press, Ages 8 to 12, $22.90 and 6.95. Reviewer: Dianne Ochiltree

NEWS May 24
Big news: Mikkeline will now be skating pairs for Germany with Norman Jeschke. Below is an official press release from Mikkeline, and you can also view the first pictures of the pair (off-ice) here " I have decided to skate pair skating in Germany. Try-outs in Berlin:
The try-out has been really great, and we improve surprisingly fast. We have now finally decided to skate together. Why I want to skate pairs: I had come to a point in my life where I needed a fresh start. I had to look in new directions and also outside my home country to find what I have always been searching for. And now I feel that I have found true happiness.
I have decided to skate pairs with Norman from now on, I have moved to Berlin and I train there now, and we will be representing Germany together. These are big decicions, but I am not doubting one second that this is the right thing for me to do.
I have always been fascinated by pair skating, and when Norman asked me if I would like to try to skate with him, I seized the chance. Now that I have tried it, I know that it is exactly right for me. I like the interaction between two skaters in the daily practice and I think it is very exciting to work with this -for me- new kind of figure skating.

    Compulsory Dance (Ravensburger Waltz)
    1. Bourne/Kraatz she clipped the boards, and I questioned their pattern it looked too wide in one corner and too close in the other. The best edges by far, although I thought they were marked rather high. Their original dance looks over-the-top and tacky, and the footwork that they did in practice is 75% on the toepicks. Ugh! Maybe I'll like it more tomorrow when I see the full OD, but I doubt it.
    4. Navka/Kostomarov light, flowy, pushed the pattern out. Depth of edge could be improved, and the extensions could be highlighted a little better.
    5. Belbin/Agosto I thought they skated this rather sloppily, with slight scrapes here and there and a pattern that kept constantly moving inward toward center ice. Strong OD to "Zorro" and a tango in practice, although they're still working out the kinks in their footwork. 6. Sauri/Stifunin I don't understand why they're so high. Their patterns were consistent, but she was not into her knees at all, and he looked like he was turning her in places. [A judge later told me that Sauri/Stifunin's unison and Joseph/Forsyth's lack thereof was what probably made the difference.] 7. Wing/Lowe a bit tentative and scrapey, especially in the corners. Still, I thought they were maybe a little unlucky to be behind the French.
