by Alfred Lansing In the summer of 1914, Sir Ernest Shackleton set off aboard the Endurance bound for the South Atlantic. The goal of his expedition was to cross the Antarctic overland, but more than a year later, and still half a continent away from the intended base, the Endurance was trapped in ice and eventually was crushed. For five months Shackleton and his crew survived on drifting ice packs in one of the most savage regions of the world before they were finally able to set sail again in one of the ship's lifeboats. Alfred Lansing's Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage is a white-knuckle account of this astounding odyssey. Oztrack Ice Skating Bookshop

Photo de la semaine Biographies News Galerie photos ... Contact 26th january 25th january Brian Joubert is currently 2nd after the men's short, Stanick Jeannette 4th and Frédéric Dambier 13th. The free program will take place today. Photos of the short are available on Yahoo but only features Stanick and Brian: http://fr.sports.yahoo.com/030124/202/2z4ty.html http://fr.sports.yahoo.com/030124/85/2z5gb.html 24th january Anne-Sophie Calvez finished 10th of the free program and 11th overall. She landed 3tl/3tl (stepped out the second jump), 3lutz/2tl, 3loop, 2a, 3lutz. She fell on the 3f and 2s. It was definitely a great performance from Anne-Sophie after a poor skate at the nationals. The program was well skated even if she lacked energy at the end. Some screen captures will be available tomorrow, along with the free dance screen captures. Yahoo has a photo of Anne-Sophie skating her free skate: 23rd january Sarah Abitbol & Stéphane Bernadis won the silver medal at the Europeans championships. But they made several mistakes in the program and won with the artistical marks. Indeed, Sarah did a double toe loop, single axel and put her hand down on the thrown triple loop. The thrown triple salchow was beautiful and it's nice to see that they have finally decided to stop doing "only" a thrown double axel where their rivals did a salchow. They have been interviewed by french tv after their program and they said that this medal was the "courage medal". Screen captures of their short and free programs have been uploaded

Great Pairs Tales of Romance Special Remembrances (Mark's Page) ... E-Mail Me Welcome to Romance on the Ice Having long been a fan of figure skating - and pairs figure skating in particular - I find myself both envious and in awe of the beautiful, artistic and athletic abilities these skaters share with us each time they step onto the ice, and like many, have wept as we lost some of the best skaters in the world. To have simply viewed the magic created by pair teams lead me to create this web site to celebrate the perfection, beauty and wonder of some of figure skatings best. I sincerely hope you enjoy your visit! Beth Destiny's Whisper is now available in print at IUniverse.com, and Amazon.Com New Chapters Posted for: WHISPERED PROMISES! Suffice it to say I'm having a wonderful time with both stories and only wish I had time to write full-time. Skaters, judges and fans will be introduced to the excitement of Major League Figure Skating (MLFS) on April 27th, 2003, when the first ever MLFS exhibition will be held at Incredible Ice in Coral Springs, Florida. While the final structure of the proposed six-city league is under development, "its existence is a reality," said founder Jon Rubin, Commissioner and CEO of Major League Figure Skating, LLC. Mr. Rubin is a former United States Figure Skating Association (USFSA) Judge and a former member of the USFSA Competition Committee, as well as a Gold Level Judge with the Ice Skating Institute (ISI). Each Major League Figure Skating team is made up of five skaters. As with other major league sports, each team will compete against the other teams in their league. The season will be highlighted with an All-Star Game and will culminate with the League Championship.

Short Track Team Members Qualify for World Cup Competition Eagan, Minn. (Oct. 18, 1998) - Members of the U.S. Short Track team secured a spot on the World Cup team this weekend at the American Cup I held in Eagan, Minn. from Oct. 17-18, a qualifying meet for the remaining four of the six World Cups this season. Ron Biondo (Broadview Heights, Ohio) and Apolo Ohno (Seattle, Wash.) both joined the team for the men, and Sarah Williams (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) joined the team for the women. It was once again domination by U.S. teammates Amy Peterson (Maplewood, Minn.) and Erin Porter (Saratoga Springs N.Y.) , who both had a bye because of their top finishes in the last two World Cups. The pair swept the women's events to give them a number one and number two overall finish. Peterson finished first in the 1500-meters, 500-meters and 1000-meters and finished second to Porter in the 3000-meters. Porter finished second in all of her events except for her win in the 3000-meters. Ohno, the young inliner who crossed over from inline skating to speedskating in 1993, finished on top of the men despite a disqualification because of a pass in the 1000-meter race. Ohno finished first in the 1500 and the 500 and second in the 3000. Biondo had his best finishes this season, placing second overall to earn his World Cup spot. Biondo finished second in the 1500, 500, and 1000, and seventh in the 3000 meters.

It's not Babe Ruth, but Babe Didrikson Zahariasthe greatest woman athlete of all time. Few men, if any, have ever bested her feats in sports from track and field to golf. Babe broke barriers for women. Contrary to Aver Brundage's belief that women had no place in sports, Babe proved that women could sweat, succeed, set new records and still enjoy dancing at night. Freedman presents Babe as a complete and complex person. Terrific photos show her in action. She was a one-woman team! If Babe is the tops in sports, Freedman holds that same honor in the field of photobiography. His books are "must reads" for all ages. 1999, Clarion, Ages 10 up, $18.00. Reviewer: Jan Lieberman

Rachel Rutledge Women gymnasts have always possessed precision, power and grace. But it was not until 1972 that a young Soviet athlete, Olga Korbut stepped into the Olympic spotlight and changed the face of the sport forever. Until Korbut, the stars of women's gymnastics were mature, conservative, technically sound veterans in the twenties or early thirties. Today's gymnasts are young risk-takers with a keen competitive spirit and a passion for perfection. This nonfiction book profiles eight of the world's best female gymnastsSimona Amanar, Vanessa Atler, Dominique Dawes, Ling Jie, Svetlana Khorkina, Kristen Maloney, Shannon Miller and Dominique Moceanu. Chapters giving a brief overview of the sport are also included. This is a great reference book for school or library, and or a gift book for the budding gymnast! It is part of the "Women of Sports" series. 1999, Millbrook Press, Ages 8 to 12, $22.90 and 6.95. Reviewer: Dianne Ochiltree

Did you think you were going to lose your Friends this year. Well, have no fear, Joey, Rachel, Chandler and the gang are gonna give you one more year of great (lets hope) TV. All six cast members have agreed to come back for a ninth and final season - of course, not without a little somethin' - somethin'. In this case that would be a raise. It seems that $750,000 each an epi wasn't cutting it for Jen , Courtney, David, Lisa and the Matts. For the ninth season they'll be cashing cheques for one million dollars after every episode. Guess we don't need to ask Joey "how you doing?" .... he must be doing pretty good with all that cash. From big screen to boob tube, it seems some Hollywood movie stars are jumping over to the land of commercials and remote controls. Hottie Brendan Fraser (star of flicks like, The Mummy and The Mummy Returns ) is making an appearance on the NBC sitcom, Scrubs . Bridgette Wilson-Sampras who played the fiance in the flick The Wedding Planner is also going to be a guest on a TV show - Frasier . No air dates have been announced for either

Can a woman in her early twenties write memoirs worth listening to? She can if she's "Katia" Gordeeva, Olympic Gold Medal winner, wife and figure skating partner of the late Sergei Grinkov. In dark, measured tones narrator Irina Lechova expresses the full measure of Katia's shock and grief at the loss of her entire life after the sudden death of Grinkovher best friend, her husband, her skating partner, the father of her child. "No one who has such a wonderful life," she reflects with deep Russian drama, "should expect it to last." Not only do we learn a lot about the spartan world of athletics in the Soviet Union, Lechova's haunting delivery projects beyond the loving words of the text, suggesting shades of loneliness in an old-fashioned marriage (by American standards) with a large age difference between the partners. Listening to Lechova's completely credible performance, one wishes Katia all the best as she continues to create "her new life."
