Gliding through a foot of fresh snow deep within the winter wilderness is an experience not easily forgotten, but to safely enjoy the backcountry in winter you must possess a variety of skills necessary in an environment where the margin for error shrinks with each stride away from civilization.
From your first strides into the backcountry to ski descents of the High Peaks, our progression of courses, the Ski Mastery Method , will help you develop your skills and increase your knowledge of nordic skiing. All of our courses are taught in the backcountry, on the wide variety of snow conditions provided by nature. You should realize that backcountry skiing is very different from skiing on a carefully prepared surface at nordic or alpine ski centers. The difficulty of the skiing can vary tremendously with different snow conditions, therefore we suggest you rate your ability conservatively. If you're unsure of your ability, contact us and we will determine your skiing level according to our definition. To meet your particular scheduling requirements, any of these courses, and all advanced skiing instruction, can be arranged through Private Instruction
Students provide their own nordic ski equipment for all ski courses. Lug-soled, rugged boots, metal-edged skis and climbing skins are an asset in the backcountry. For our Backcountry Basics course any touring or light touring equipment will be adequate; however those wishing to acquire more advanced skills will need sturdier equipment. Please

Safety, Our First Priority Personal Responsibility How Difficult Are Our Courses? Physical Conditioning ... limbing With Young Adults and Children Safety, Our First Priority
This is always our number one priority. You can't learn if you're afraid so when we teach the use of safety equipment and techniques we make sure you understand how they work and why they work. Rather than overloading ourselves with superfluous gear we foster an attitude of true safety through informed decision-making and realistic self-assessment. This emphasis on good judgement provides a far greater margin of safety than equipment alone can. Personal Responsibility
Risks and dangers are a part of all of the activities we conduct. Although we will do our best to make you aware of these hazards, they can never be entirely eliminated because of the inherent nature of the mountains. By choosing to participate in our activities, you are also choosing to expose yourself to these risks and dangers and choosing to accept responsibility for any accidents which could result in personal injury or death. To confirm your acceptance of this responsibility you will be required to sign an assumption of risk and liability release at the start of your course. Recognizing and accepting, or avoiding, risk is the fundamental responsibility of every alpinist and it is the essence of mountain activities. How Difficult Are Our Courses?
