  • The early Olympic Games were celebrated as a religious festival from 776 B.C. until 393 A.D., when the games were banned for being a pagan festival (the Olympics celebrated the Greek god Zeus). In 1894, a French educator Baron Pierre de Coubertin, proposed a revival of the ancient tradition, and thus the modern-day Olympic Summer Games were born. Host Greece won the most medals (47) at the first Olympic Summer Games in 1896. The first Winter Olympic Games were held in Chamonix, France in 1924. Norway has won the most medals (239) at the Winter Games. The United States has won more medals (2,019) at the Summer Games than any other country. Up until 1992 the Olympics were held every four years. Since then, the Winter and Summer games have alternated every two years.

(Photo Robin Beck) "I had no teeth and my wrist was broken, but did I sit down and cry? No, I picked myself up and went out and had one of my best races two weeks later at the Olympics," said World Cup champion and three-time Olympic skier Julie Parisien to hundreds of cheering kids. "No matter if you get discouraged, you pick yourself up and go on. I was mentally really prepared, and the injury made me even more determined," Parisien said about her first Olympic competition in 1992 in Albertville, France, where she earned fourth and fifth places, barely missing a medal. Ms. Parisien was at Boothbay Region Elementary School Friday to address third through eighth graders on her Winter Fitness Tour, promoting winter sports in general and the Ski Maine Passport program for fifth graders in particular. Students responded enthusiastically to her personal story and to her message stressing not only goal-setting and determination but also the sheer enjoyment of winter sports in Maine's spectacular landscape.

Russian freestyle federation protests against Olympic acrobatic freestyle score
Lev Kofman, president of the Russian freestyle skiing federation, has written to International Ski Federation President Gian Franco Kasper complaining about the scores awarded Russian competitors in the Olympic women's aerials on Monday.
Kofman emphasized that Russia weren't lodging an official protest over the event, won by Australian Alisa Camplin ahead of Canadians Veronica Brenner and Deirdra Dionne.
But he echoed the complaints of skiers Olga Koroleva, who finished fourth, and Natalia Orekhova, who was seventh.
He said he wrote Kasper that the judges "are not professional enough. They're not objective. The Americans and Canadians vote only for their own people."
Koroleva was first after the first jump of the finals, her most difficult. She landed her second jump cleanly, but still couldn't get past the Canadians who had surged ahead with their second jumps.
"I think I did a good jump," she said. "I earned third place, and my degree of difficulty was the same as the other girls'." Orekhova didn't really blame the judges for her finish, but she did say she thought the judging was skewed in the qualification round.
