Dogsledding First things first: "Mush!" comes from the French Canadian "Marché!" meaning "Walk!" And no, real sled dog drivers don’t use the word. Instead, they use such commands as "Gee!" (Right) "Haw!" (Left) "Hike!" or the more prosaic "All right!" But you have ample opportunity to learn all this in Jackson Hole, home to some of the strongest, most experienced sled drivers (and dogs) in the world. Here you can take a lap around the valley floor, embark on a full day’s journey to a hot springs pool, or even enjoy an overnight trip to a yurt (a backcountry hut). You can even learn to drive the dogs yourself. "Hike!" Featured Web Sites Jackson Hole Iditarod Sled Dog Tours

History
The sled is said to have its origins with the Northern American Indians. They used low built vehicles made of birch-wood - a board about two metres long with its front end curved up, like ski tips - to transport their teepees, tools and prey in winter.
It may be assumed that these sleds were also used for racing competitions at that early time already.
At any rate, it is known that by the middle of the 19th century, official sled races were being held in the civilized areas of Cananda, the United States and Russia.
In St. Moritz the first sled races were held early on already, too. The longish sleds

Harnessing the Huskies:
Dog Sledding in Montana
Answering the Call of the Wild Montana Dog Sled Events Companies Offering Dog Sled Adventures Answering the Call of the Wild Admit it. After reading "The Call of the Wild" for the first time in high school, you secretly yearned to hitch a team of huskies and yell "mush." Well, you can do just that in Montana. The popularity of dog sledding has been growing across the country in the last few years, and more and more companies in Big Sky Country are putting their winters on paws. You can find everything from quick half-day sled outings with a guide to multi-night resort adventures with planned dog sled itineraries. And no, you don't need to bring a pack of 12 huskies along; you'll find trained teams and everything else you need to get started at any of the companies listed below. Montana Dog Sled Events If the thought of trying to control a dozen yipping huskies seems a bit overwhelming, you can always do the next best thing: watch someone else try to control them. Montana has become an epicenter for high-profile dog sled races and events, including the Seeley Lake 100/200 Sled Dog Race and the Race to the Sky. The Seeley-Lincoln 100/200 is a 104/207-mile race is used as a ‘warm-up’ for the Race to the Sky and is also a qualifier for the Iditarod and the Yukon Quest Dog Sled Races in Alaska. Dog care, not speed, is the race’s emphasis, with a mandatory 4-hour camping stop at the halfway point. Lots of fun for mushers and spectators!. The race starts in Seeley Lake on Saturday afternoon and offers excellent opportunities for spectators. The teams will be available for viewing on Saturday afternoon. There is a four-hour campout at Monture Creek on Saturday night. The 100-mile race will end on Sunday morning in Lincoln at Hi-Country Beef Jerky. This will also be the turn-around point for the 200-mile race. The 200-mile teams will be there for four hours before returning to Seeley Lake. Hi-Country will also be a good spectator site on Sunday morning.

Located near the confluence of the Mississippi and Apple rivers in northwestern Illinois, the 2,500-acre Mississippi Palisades State Park is rich in American Indian history. Natural Features Palisades is the word used to describe a line of lofty, steep cliffs usually seen along a river, and Mississippi Palisades, 3 miles north of Savanna in Carroll County, handsomely lives up to its name. Caves are evident as are dangerous sink holes-limestone caves that go straight down. Erosion has carved intriguing rock formations, including Indian Head, with its aquiline characteristics, and Twin Sisters, a pair of humanoid figures on the bluff tops. The U.S. Interior Department recognized the remarkable nature of this area when in 1973 it designated acreage here as a national landmark. Animal life, within the park and the river areas immediately adjoining it, is varied. Waterfowl and shorebirds are numerous, as are wild turkeys. Striking pileated woodpeckers make their home in the park, and depending on ice conditions, eagles feed at the river in January and February. Because so many birds migrate along the river, their lyrical songs can be heard at the Mississippi Palisades each spring and fall.

Jubilee College State Park is a 3,200-acre facility, located in Peoria County between the towns of Kickapoo and Brimfield, just off U.S. Route 150. This scenic area, with its rolling topography and meandering Jubilee Creek, offers various outdoor recreational opportunities.
History
Named Jubilee College by its founder, Episcopal Bishop Philander Chase in 1839, in expression of his thankfulness and joy, the college was one of the earliest educational enterprises in Illinois. Through a series of misfortunes climaxed by the Bishop's death, the college closed in 1862. In 1933 the college and grounds, consisting of 93 acres, were presented to the state of Illinois. Since that time the Department of Natural Resources increased the acreage to 3,200. The college building, placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, has been restored to its original appearance and is under the management of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. The park continues to flourish with the development of a new campground, day-use facilities, along with an entrance road and interior roads that now link the park and the college area.

Dog Sledding in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan What is it like to dog sled? Join the mushers of the Upper Peninsula for a dogsledding adventure. You are in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan As you stand on the runners of the dog sled, looking in amazement at the very excited dogs that are about to pull you down the trail, you begin to wonder..Just what have I gotten myself into? These dogs are psyched-and based on how the sled is bouncing around-strong, too. You get a little comfort knowing you will not be alone on the trail. Your guide will be ahead with his own team. Suddenly, your guide turns around and gives what you think is the thumbs-up signal with his fur-mittened hand, and like a shot he is gone. Your dogs are screaming to join their kennel mates on the trail. You lift your foot off the brake, and without warning, you can't believe how fast you are going down this narrow chute through the trees. The loud barking and excitement at the hook up are behind you. The dogs don't make a sound while they are running. Trees are flashing past you in a blur, seemingly close enough to reach out and tear off your parka. You vaguely remember something the guide said about trying not to hit the trees. You've made it the first half-mile and turn onto a straight, wide trail. Even though the dogs are still running quickly you remember that you are supposed to breathe, and begin to relax a little. Further down the trail the dogs slow to a nice trot and things seem to be under control.

Warmth.
Children cool off faster than adults, and while in a sled, they're not working at all. Synthetic clothing, like polypro, is a good choice because it keeps them warm even if they get wet. Insulated snow boots are also recommended. Balaclave style hats are a must, and extra warmth can be attained by putting the child in a sleeping bag. You might also want to attach any "losable" items like mittens. Fluids. Keep your passengers well fueled and watered. Calories are being burnt up just to stay warm - and simply breathing in cold conditions is enough to keep a child thirsty. Stop often and tank up. Recreation. Don't forget to bring the child's skis along - they're not going to let you have all the fun! Rest stops and lunch are good times to introduce skiing. Bring along a favorite toy or book, too. Windscreen: protects your passenger from wind, flying snow and brush.

Related Resources: Parent Link Safe Sledding Listen to the article The thrill of whisking down a steep, snow-covered hill has made sledding a favorite winter past time. However, spills that occur while sledding can be serious. Here are some simple things you need to know to help your child avoid a sledding injury:
  • Never allow children to sled in or near streets or automobile traffic. Watch weather conditions closely. Icy conditions mean more speed and great potential for injury. Choose an area that is safe for sledding. Make sure the hill or run has no potential to project your child into traffic or creek beds or rivers regardless of the weather conditions. Make sure the area is free of obvious hazards such as trees and utility poles. Rocks and stumps beneath the snow can also pose a hidden threat. Choose a sled that allows for steering. Sleds that lack a steering mechanism and/or a had surface to ride upon should be avoided. To lessen the risk of head injury, children should sled feet first or sitting up. Dress your child in warm and protective clothing. Heavy duty gloves and boots help protect your child from cuts on his hands and feet.
