Page Selection by Keyword Matching
Anyone who has used the World Wide Web is familiar with search engines used to find pages matching a user-generated query. Many of these engines are quite sophisticated, using advanced algorithms and parallel searching techniques to provide fast, accurate responses. This problem is somewhat simpler. A group of web pages has been classified by associating a list of keywords, given in decreasing order of relevance, with each page (i.e., the order of keywords is from the most specific keyword to the least specific). For example, a page on programming in Smalltalk has the keywords Smalltalk, programming, and computers in that order; the most relevant keyword is Smalltalk. Queries also include a list of keywords, again from most to least relevant. For example, in a query consisting of the keyword Smalltalk followed by the keyword computers, Smalltalk is more important than computers. In this problem you are to determine the top five (or fewer) pages that match each of an arbitrary number of queries. To determine the strength of the relationship between a query and a web page, assume the keywords for each page and each query are assigned integer weights, in descending order, starting with

This page describes the various products that are available from Object Arts.
Dolphin Smalltalk XP 5.0 Value Edition (DVE)
This is the entry-level version of the commercial Dolphin product. It provides you with all of the basic tools you need to be able to develop Windows™ applications in Smalltalk. It includes the following features:
  • Full support for hosting ActiveX controls within the MVP application framework, and for creating ActiveX automation clients and servers. Source management facilities that will allow your development projects to be placed under the control of external source code management tools such as Microsoft SourceSafe and WinCVS. SUnit testing framework for test-first based development. Flexible "Flipper" inspector allows you to explore the object you create to any depth.
The Value Edition does not include some of the more advanced features that are available in the higher level products, such as refactoring tools, database access, TCP/IP sockets connectivity and the ability to deploy your applications directly to executable (EXE) files. Note, however, that it *is* possible to use DVE to create standalone applications that are not in EXE format. Download Buy Now for Upgrading

Abstract:
When faced with a shortage of Smalltalk programming skills, the IBM Lab at Research Triangle Park, North Carolina worked with North Carolina State University to find a solution. What resulted was a joint program for Smalltalk object oriented education centered around sound engineering and project work. That program now running for over two years has been continually improved by evaluating each semester's results and making appropriate changes. IBM's direct involvement as an industry sponsor included the development of course materials, classroom instruction and project mentoring. This involvement provided IBM engineers firsthand experiences with the students and allowed them to work effectively with NC State to adjust the program. This approach has proved successful in overcoming this technology's steep learning curve, providing students with a foundation of object oriented skills. The program has created an effective combination of an industry's skill needs and the university's goal of providing a solid engineering education. We believe it could serve as a model for other companies that have specific education and skill requirements.
Introduction
The IBM facility in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina builds software development tools and develops object oriented technologies based on the Smalltalk programming language. IBM was facing a short supply of skilled Smalltalk programmers, both for its needs and the rapidly growing demand of its customers.

For many years the smalltalk programming language had nearuniversal acknowledgementas the best language for teaching, practising and prototyping object
    http://www.jdl.co.uk/training/2-siders/H-OwST_2s.html
Introduction For many years the Smalltalk programming language had near-universal acknowledgement as the best language for teaching, practising and prototyping object-oriented designs and implementations even when it is unlikely to be the eventual implementation language. This course uses Smalltalk to provide a practical introduction to object-oriented programming and the principles of object-oriented design. Smalltalk has also become a serious and credible application development environment, and this course can also act as an introduction for Smalltalk programmers.
    Duration and Construction
The course lasts three days. It is based on a cycle of theory-language-practice-review, with approximately two cycles per day. One non-trivial, practical case-study is developed during the course. Each day will start at 09.00 and finish at 16.30.
    Intended Audience
Participants will be practising software engineers who already know and use a high-level programming languagepreferably a modern, block structured language. They will be wanting to understand and practice the correct use of object technology and might even be considering Smalltalk as their implementation technology. The course can be used as an introductory course and be followed by an object-oriented analysis and design course. It can also be taken after an analysis and design course as a way of solidifying and strengthening theoretical knowledge.
    Aims
    • To experience all the major insights that are necessary in order to obtain the maximum benefit from object technology

    Review:
Kent Beck has distilled much of his wisdom and experience of writing Smalltalk code into this book of guidelines. These guidelines cover a range of coding topics, including: structuring behaviour using small methods, using of state and temporary variables, using Collection objects, formatting code. The guidelines are structured using the now-popular Pattern Language approach, with catchy names for the patterns (to promote an expanded vocabulary), explanations and discussions of the problems and appropriate solutions, and pointers to other related patterns. Some of these guidelines are new to me, and even the ones I had previously worked out for myself benefit from being written out explicitly and

    The Leda Programming Language
Leda is a multiparadigm programming language. The idea of a multiparadigm language is to provide a framework in which programmers can work in a variety of styles, freely intermixing constructs from different paradigms. The techniques supported by Leda include imparative programming, the object-oriented approach, logic programming, and functional programming. A complete description of Leda can be found in the book, Multiparadigm Programming in Leda , published by Addison-Wesley , 1995. Sample chapters from this forthcoming book are available on-line ; these include an introduction to the Leda language and a formal description of the Leda grammar. Other information, including sources for several implementations and various technical reports and other documentation, can be obtained using the deparmental mail server.
