Smoking and your health
Although everybody is aware of the health dangers of smoking, these dangers are frequently underestimated. The truth is shocking to most people.
Smoking as a cause of death and disability
  • Smoking-related disease will cause the death of one in every two life-long smokers
  • Smoking is the single largest cause of lung cancer and is an important factor in at least seven other cancers
  • Smoking causes around 82% of deaths from lung cancer
  • Smoking increases the risk of heart disease, stroke and several other causes of death. Smokers in their 30s ad 40s are five times more likely to have a heart attack than non-smokers
  • About half of all people killed by tobacco-related diseases die in middle age, with an average loss of about 20–25 years of life expectancy
  • Diseases associated with smoking can cause pain, distress and disability for many years before death

Smoking and cancer Cancer is the bestknown risk associated with smoking. Smokerswho die from smoking in their 30s and 40s die mainly from heart attacks.
http://www.niquitin.co.uk/uk/html/SN0211000.htm
Smoking and cancer
Cancer is the best-known risk associated with smoking. In Western Europe, North America and parts of Asia, it has been estimated that smoking accounts for approximately 30% of all cancer deaths.
Smoking and the heart and blood vessels
Smoking increases the risk of death caused by arterial disease. The arteries carry blood from the heart to the rest of the body. During normal ageing the lining of the arteries becomes less flexible, fatty deposits are laid down in the walls of the artery and the diameter of the artery narrows. This process is known as atherosclerosis. This narrowing reduces the amount of oxygen reaching the rest of the body. This lack of oxygen results in angina (crushing, cramp-like pain in the chest) when the arteries supplying the heart are affected. It can also lead to heart attack and stroke. Smoking can accelerate the process of atherosclerosis and therefore increases the risk of heart attack and stroke.
Smokers who die from smoking in their 30s and 40s die mainly from heart attacks. Risk of death from heart attacks in this age group of smokers is five times higher than that of non-smokers. It is estimated that tobacco is responsible for up to 80% of all heart attack deaths in smokers under 50 years of age.
Although death from stroke is less common than death from heart attack, risk is increased in people who smoke. In the USA, death from stroke and other diseases involving the blood vessels in the brain is increased in people aged 35–64 years who smoke.

http://www.nb.sympatico.ca/healthyway/BAYER/Hl_smoke.htm
Smoking and Your Health Smoking (or exposure to second-hand smoke) is a major risk factor. Nicotine injures the lining of the arteries and increases the build-up of fat deposits in that area. This can lead to heart disease and/or stroke . It also makes the heart work harder and decreases the oxygen carried in the blood. Smoking can double or triple risk of stroke. Women who smoke and also take oral contraceptives ("the pill") are at high risk of stroke. Take Action Now!
  • Quit smoking and avoid exposure to second-hand smoke - you will immediately reduce your risk of heart attack.
  • If you are ready to quit, set a "Quit Date" now and write it down somewhere so you can see the date approaching.
  • Get support from others when you decide to quit - tell someone; join a support group.
  • Alter your routine to avoid the urge to smoke.

Cigarette, cigar, and pipe smoking increase the risk of cancer. Tobacco use accounts for 30 percent, or one in three, of all cancer deaths in the United States. Smoking is responsible for almost 90 percent of lung cancers among men and more than 70 percent among women. Smoking is a major risk factor for cancer of the mouth, larynx, esophagus, kidney and bladder. Tobacco smoking causes several lung diseases. Chronic bronchitis is a common ailment for smokers. your weight
It is true that you may gain weight after you quit smoking. The important thing to remember is that it is perfectly normal. You will naturally have changes in your metabolic rate and eating habits. Fortunately there are ways to cope with life’s stresses since you have decided to quit.
Smoking increases the metabolic rate and speeds your body’s process to burn calories. After you stop smoking, food may taste and smell better therefore leading to bigger portions and extra helpings. Snacking may also become a method of dealing with the stress.
Above all, make quitting smoking your overall goal. Although weight gain may occur, there are ways to prevent eating reactions to stress. You can focus on changing your routine and keeping your mind off smoking. These methods include:
  • Exercise Relaxation Eating healthy foods Thinking into the future Being aware of your help resources

If you want to stop smoking but are worried about gaining weight, this brochure may help you. Many ex-smokers do gain a few pounds, but only a few gain a lot of weight. The best action you can take to improve your health is to quit smoking. Smoking is much more harmful to your health than gaining a few pounds. Making some simple changes, like developing healthier eating and physical activity habits, should help you control your weight gain when you quit smoking.
Will I Gain Weight if I Stop Smoking?
Not everyone gains weight when they stop smoking. On average, people who quit smoking gain only about 10 pounds. You are more likely to gain weight when you stop smoking if you have smoked for 10 to 20 years or smoked one or more packs of cigarettes a day. You can control your weight while you quit smoking by making healthy eating and physical activity a part of your life. Although you might gain a few pounds, remember you have stopped smoking and taken a big step toward a healthier life.
What causes weight gain after quitting?
