41. Smoking And Your Digestive System
Clearly, this question needs more study. For More Information. Informationabout smoking and health is available from. Office on smoking
http://www.niddk.nih.gov/health/digest/pubs/smoke/smoking.htm

Cigarette smoking causes a variety of life-threatening diseases, including lung cancer, emphysema, and heart disease. An estimated 430,000 deaths each year are directly caused by cigarette smoking. Smoking is responsible for changes in all parts of the body, including the digestive system. This fact can have serious consequences because it is the digestive system that converts foods into the nutrients the body needs to live. Current estimates indicate that about one-third of all adults smoke. And, while adult men seem to be smoking less, women and teenagers of both sexes seem to be smoking more. How does smoking affect the digestive system of all these people?
Harmful Effects
Smoking has been shown to have harmful effects on all parts of the digestive system, contributing to such common disorders as heartburn and peptic ulcers. It also increases the risk of Crohn's disease and possibly gallstones. Smoking seems to affect the liver, too, by changing the way it handles drugs and alcohol. In fact, there seems to be enough evidence to stop smoking solely on the basis of digestive distress.
Heartburn
Heartburn is common among Americans. More than 60 million Americans have heartburn at least once a month, and about 15 million have it daily.

Smoking or Your Health Choice Every puff of a cigarette, cigar or pipe, every dip and chew Has an impact on you and those around you. It affects Good health. WHY ALL THE FUSS ABOUT CIGARETTES? PEOPLE HAVE BEEN SMOKING FOR CENTURIES. It wasn't until 1964, when the Surgeon General of the United States issued the first reports on the dangers of cigarette smoking, that there was clear, convincing evidence that smoking is dangerous. New studies continually add to the evidence, so today it can be said without question that smoking kills. HOW DOES TOBACCO ACTUALLY HURT MY BODY? More than 4,000 chemicals are emitted by a smoking cigarette - 43 of them are known to cause cancer. THE THREE MOST DANGEROUS CHEMICALS FROM SMOKE ARE:
  • tar, which is capable of causing cancer in tissues it comes in contact with; nicotine, a highly addictive drug that is absorbed by the lungs and affects the nervous system; and carbon monoxide, a deadly gas that reduces the ability of your blood to carry oxygen throughout your body.
When you smoke, you increase the rate of your heartbeat and encourage the growth of plaque - a sticky substance that builds up in the arteries and causes hardening of the arteries. This contributes to blood vessel and heart disease.

Why cigarettes can be a woman's worst enemy
November 8, 1999 Web posted at: 3:00 PM EST (2000 GMT) In this story: Smoking increases your risk of cervical and rectal cancer Smoking worsens your period Smoking damages your fertility Smoking hurts your unborn baby ... RELATEDS By Peg Rosen (WebMD) Sure, cigarettes can harm anybody, men and women alike. But some of smoking's ill effects, from ectopic pregnancy to premature menopause, are reserved for women only. This November 19 is the American Cancer Society's 22nd Great American Smokeout. If you haven't decided to give up smoking yet, here are some compelling reasons to quit now. Smoking increases your risk of cervical and rectal cancer Not only can smoking cause a variety of cancers in both men and women, it puts women at higher risk of cervical cancer, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). A Danish study published in the April 21, 1999, issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute finds that premenopausal women who smoke are six times more likely to develop rectal cancer than those who don't.

Your Role In Preventing
Your Kids From Smoking
Lead By Example
If you want your child not to smoke, you need to set a good example by not smoking yourself. If both parents smoke, a young person is more than twice as likely to smoke. If you currently smoke, seek help from programs and materials to help you stop. Until you are successful, begin changing your smoking habits. Never smoke inside your home or when you are close to your child, and avoid leaving your child with someone who smokes. Communication Is Key Talking with your kids honestly and openly about the risks of smoking is an essential part of good parenting. It could even save their lives. Here are some tips to consider when talking to your children about smoking: • Teach your children to say "no". Understanding The Risks Teens and even pre-teens are smoking at an alarming rate. Many start smoking by age 11 and are addicted by age 14. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that each day more than 3,000 kids become regular smokers and about one third of these children will eventually die from cancer, heart disease or lung disease. Additional health consequences of smoking include:

Tobacco has many bad health effects, particularly for people with diabetes. No matter how long you've smoked, your health will improve after you quit. Nicotine, the drug in tobacco, is one of the most addictive substances known. Besides the physical addiction, many smokers also become psychologically hooked on cigarettes. So kicking the habit is hard, but worth the work. There are many methods you can try to help you quit and stay away from smoking for good. Smoking Hurts Your Health
The best-known effect of smoking is that it causes cancer. Smoking can also aggravate many problems that people with diabetes already face, such as heart and blood vessel disease.:
  • Smoking cuts the amount of oxygen reaching tissues. The decrease in oxygen can lead to a heart attack, stroke, miscarriage, or stillbirth.
  • Smoking increases your cholesterol levels and the levels of some other fats in your blood, raising your risk of a heart attack.
  • Smoking damages and constricts the blood vessels. This damage can worsen foot ulcers and lead to blood vessel disease and leg and foot infections.
  • Smokers with diabetes are more likely to get nerve damage and kidney disease.

Smoking and Your Reproductive Health Most people are aware that smoking cigarettes is bad for your health. Smoking causes heart attacks, other heart disease and lung problems, including lung cancer. In fact, among women, lung cancer deaths now surpass breast cancer deaths each year. Not everyone realizes, however, that smoking is also harmful to a women's reproductive health. For example, smoking is associated with cervical cancer. Among women over age 35 years who are trying to prevent pregnancy, smoking can cause higher risks of side effects with oral contraceptives (the birth control pill). For women trying to get pregnant, cigarette smoking can cause a delay in how long it takes to become pregnant. And, once a woman gets pregnant, smoking can harm the woman and her fetus. Cancer of the Cervix The cervix is the opening of the uterus (womb) into the vagina. Women who smoke are more likely to develop cervical cancer than those who don't. The reason for this relationship is not known; however, some studies have found a chemical byproduct of nicotine (the addictive drug in cigarettes) in the secretions of the cervix. The poisons in cigarette smoke may also get to the cervix through the bloodstream. Increased Side Effects with the Birth Control Pill Unfortunately, many women mistakenly believe that taking birth control pills is dangerous. The truth is that smoking cigarettes is much more dangerous to your health.

Smoking decreases the amount of oxygen available to your heart, placing an unnecessary burden on your heart and blood vessels. Tobacco smoke contains carbon monoxide gas. When carbon monoxide is inhaled, it attaches to the hemoglobin in the blood, replacing valuable oxygen. The blood has less oxygen to deliver to the cells as it travels to all parts of the body. Smokers' hemoglobin often contains as much as 8% carbon monoxide. Research indicates that carbon monoxide may have a direct, negative effect on the heart muscle itself, on the blood vessels and on blood clotting. Smokers have more fat deposits in the lining of their arteries than nonsmokers.
