SUBORDER SERPENTES (SNAKES)
In Australia there are 7 recognized families of snake. They are:
1/ Typhlopidae-Blind or Worm Snakes (Found All Mainland Aust.)
2/ Boidae-Pythons (and Boas) (Found most parts of Mainland Aust.)
3/ Colubridae-Colubrid Snakes (Found east coast and far Nth Aust.)
4/ Acrochordidae-File Snakes (Found Far Nth Aust.)
5/ Elapidae-Front Fanged Venomous Land Snakes (Found Aust.Wide)
6/ Laticaudidae-Egg Laying Sea Snakes (Found Nth Aust. Seas)
7/ Hydrophiidae-Live Bearing Sea Snakes (Found All Aust. Seas, except Sth Coast).
LOCOMOTION Snakes move over land in four ways, and combinations of these. The first three methods are used by all snakes, where as the fourth method is only used by a few species. 1/ Snakes may move by minute muscular contractions of belly (ventral) muscles, which move in waves down the snakes' body and enables the snake to move in a straight ahead or linear manner. 2/ Snakes may move by pushing the body forward in a series of curves which gain purchase from irregularities of the ground surface.

http://www.state.sd.us/gfp/DivisionWildlife/Snakes/SnakeInfo.htm
General Snake Information From Eggs or Live Birth Most snakes hatch from eggs (oviparous). Racers, bullsnakes, milk snakes and green snakes are common egg-layers. The eggs are usually white and have an oblong, leathery-like shell. Eggs are normally deposited in a location that is moist and relatively warm such as sand, sawdust piles, rotting stumps, or under rocks. Snake eggs are not incubated like bird eggs; the warmth of the substrate and rays of the sun control the incubation process. Incubation may last up to 60 days before the young are fully developed and hatch. Other snakes, such as garter snakes and rattlesnakes, have live birth of the fully developed young (ovoviviparous). The fertile eggs develop within the maternal body. Food All snakes are predators. They must locate their prey before they seize it. Snakes will eat whatever they can catch, master, and swallow. Their prey is located by their senses of vision, smell, or thermosensitivity. The food they consume depends upon the animal’s size and the environment where it lives. Rattlesnakes eat rodents such as mice, ground squirrels, and the young of prairie dogs and cottontail rabbits. They also eat other snakes, lizards, birds, and insects. The average snake will consume two to three times its own weight in various food items between the spring and fall months when the snake is away from its winter den.

Catalog: Book Manufacturer: Advanced Vivarium Systems Authors: Michael McEachern Release Date: October, 1997 Availability: Usually ships within 2 to 3 weeks List Price: Our Price: Used Price: More Details from Amazon.com Amazon international Product Reviews: Dated, but still an excellent primer on corn snake genetics So many new corn snake color morphs have been developed since this book was first published that its coverage of the morphs that existed at the time seems a bit dated. Nevertheless, this book is still of considerable use to corn snake breeders, as well as anyone else interested in breeding for recessive traits, for its clear explanation of Mendelian rules of inheritance. Novice corn snake keepers ask too often the question of what you get when you breed this kind of corn snake with that kind; after reading this book, they'll be able to figure it out for themselves. Readers interested in descriptions of the latest corn snake morphs, and how they're made, should consult The Corn Snake Manual by Bill and Kathy Love.

Bridge Day 2002 Venomous Snakes West Virginia's three venomous species of snakes are the northern copperhead, the eastern rattlesnake, and the timber rattlesnake. Reports of venomous bites are rare, but usually occur while a person is trying to catch or carelessly handle a snake. All species prefer to avoid confrontation and often move away from an approaching human or remain still and allow the threat to pass by. Rattlesnakes do not always rattle when a person or animal is near. When traveling through areas thought to contain venomous snakes, you can minimize the possibility of an encounter by using common sense.

First published in 1987, Snakes: Ecology and Evolutionary Biology became an indispensable reference book on herpetology.
I thought
you would be interested to know that it is now available again, reprinted with a new foreword by the editors, from The
Blackburn Press.
Its extensive review of the biology of snakes includes topics such as zoogeography, fossil history, systematics, social
behavior, foraging, and reproduction. With contributions from numerous leading herpetologists, the work is divided into sections on Systematics and Morphology, Collecting and Captive Maintenance, and Life History and Ecology.

Your snake will also require a hide box . snakes in general are den dwellers. Therefore it is a good idea to have someplace where they can go to hide.

(this is my lawyer) I am not now, nor will I ever be, a snake expert. This web site is meant to be a GENERAL GUIDE ONLY, and should not at any time be construed as the word of GOD or anything similar. I have no magical healing powers and will not be liable for anything untoward that happens to your snake as a direct result of anything read or implied on this and ALL SUBSEQUENT PAGES. My attorney and I thank you.
SELECTING THE RIGHT SNAKE FOR YOU
The first thing you need to do is take a step back and let some common sense take over. Some snakes can reach epic proportions. The African Rock Python, Reticulated Python, Burmese Python and the Anaconda are just plain huge! Retic's and Anaconda's can reach lengths of 30 or more feet and weigh 800 pounds! Read that again if you must. It is TRUE! And the Burmese is not far behind. An adult female can be upwards of 25 feet and weigh 300 or more pounds. Not the kind of animal I want prowling around my house. I once asked my daughter what a 30 foot Anaconda eats and she replied, "ANYTHING IT WANTS"! Pretty smart for a 9 year old.
Common sense and a lot of RESEARCH should help you decide what kind of snake is best for you and your family. Why is research so important? Well, if you did your research you would know that female's are bigger than males for the most part. I found this out from a breeder. I didn't know that a female Red Tail Boa can be as much as 12' long and the males usually not more than 6'-8'. This is why I chose a male. I have 2 small children and a dog and cat. I don't need any of them killed.

http://www.slither.co.uk/genatt.html
General Attributes
Before taking any decisions, any aspiring snake keeper should stop and give great consideration to the responsibilies involved. Realise that its being confined to a cage means that the snake cannot take care of itself, and YOU are responsible for its welfare and all its requirements. BEFORE you aquire any specimens, be sure you have the time, money, patience and ongoing enthusiasm to care for them properly. The owning and caring for snakes can be a very rewarding and pleasurable experience, but requires a level of commitment greater than that of the average "pet" owner, if you are less than sure about these aspects perhaps now would be a good to realise it and not start.
What's a good snake to start out with?
This subject is tied up with several other factors, size, housing, feeding, cost and family considerations. Each has its own chapter, and this section should be considered an overview. Family considerations should be one of the first criteria, what will your parents/partner/flatmate feel about sharing their living space with a snake? There are people whose worst nightmare is a snake, their feelings should be respected and positive response received before embarking on your purchase.
Housing is another major consideration, tied in with size. You will need to find out what the maximum size your snake is likely to grow to and plan accordingly. Reckon on 1 square foot of floor space for every foot of snake as a minimum. The housing can be increased in size as the snake grows, but this obviously adds to the expense.
