Welcome to www.culturalstudies.net This is our new home! Many more changes, additions, and innovations are coming this summer. Don't touch that back button! The CSC Reading Room is open again.
(Please go to http://www.washtech.org/day2/index.html for information on how to help the Amazon.com customer support workers.) Once the Reading Room is open, we will begin to add the following:
  • Growth from one to several to many booksellers, large and small. We will also have links to books in the public domain. We have no plans to leave Amazon, but do wish our surfers to pay attention to the situations of workers in ALL e-commerce companies.
  • We will very soon have reading groups dedicated to individual books with threaded discussions associated with each group. This will be the central and most important content of The Reading Room
  • And we'll see what else . . .
    Welcome!

Introduction Are you concerned about the environment? Do you wonder how technology affects our lives? Do you like cities and urban culture? Are you interested in diversity and pluralism? Are you concerned about how the legal system affects daily life? Do you wonder how work and family life will shape your future? Do you believe the arts and popular culture reveal our values, hopes, and fears? Are you intersted in a five year BA/MA program? Do you want to be on a University campus adjacent to an urban National Park and in close proximity
to other museums and historic sites? American Studies at UMASS Lowell may be the major for you!
What is American Studies? American Studies invites students to examine the development of American society and its culture. American Studies encourages students to explore the relationships among ideas, institutions, values, and aesthetic forms as they have evolved in the United States. Reflecting the pluralistic nature of the American experience, this program provides opportunities for students to explore multiculturalism and diversity in America.

    Project Summary
Scenario Student Pages References Index Subject/Content Area: World Cultures/Social Studies Target Audience: Freshman, 9th grade. The students are our lowest functioning group that is not labeled with a special education designation. The students are following a program that falls within the curriculum parameters associated with the World Cultures course of study. This is an entry level course and is a state requirement for graduation in Illinois. Project Goals: This project will likely cover a two-to-three week unit related to the African continent. The overall purpose of this project is to enable the students to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world as indicated in the executive summary of the Curriculum Standards of the National Council for the Social Studies . This project will illustrate the importance of water as a resource and as an instrument of change in an interdependent world. Learner Outcomes: Students will be able to:
  • analyze and explain the ways groups, societies, and cultures address human needs and concerns.

Doing genealogical research is always a high interest activity for students of all ages. In addition to the rewards of a personal nature, research creates a host of opportunities to practice and integrate social studies skills learned or that need to be learned.
Family histories written today provide some of the primary resource material for the historians of the future ("...when a person dies a library burns..") Collecting data, obtaining and evaluating documents and sources, conducting and recording eyewitness accounts of historical events in family life provide opportunities to practice the historians craft. We should ask student/historians to weed and cull, to evaluate, to interpret, and to assign value to historical events and accounts of those events.
Finally, we must ask students to practice their writing skills and to publish in some form, if only for fellow students and other family members. In addition to these reasons, knowing the family medical history can have a survival value, as more and more research links families to various diseases.
With all of these advantages, I am surprised that more don't require lessons in family history.
