If social class is a variable of your research study then it is important that you show up-to-date knowledge. You are advised to use the new system or to offer good reasons why you have stuck to the old one in your work. The leader of the team who redesigned the class index was Prof. David Rose of Essex University. The reasons for redesigning were:
  • Manufacturing has declined Under the old system, almost everybody was in Class 3 The growth in the employment of women The emergence of service sector industry (leisure, food entertainment, insurance, and business)
  • The basis of the new system is on employment conditions:
  • Job security Promotion opportunity Ability and opportunity to work on own and make own decisions about tasks
  • Social Class Typical employment Higher Managerial occupations Company directors, Police Inspectors, Bank Managers, Senior Civil Servants, Military Officers

    S OCIOLOGY OF D EATH AND D YING
    It has been claimed that one can never look directly at the sun nor at one's own death. And yet, throughout the history of mankind, both have been the enduring themes of myth and religion, science and magic, curiosity and fear. From our late twentieth century vantage point we find that as the sun is understood as being the source of life in the natural order, so death is becoming recognized as the central dynamism underlying the life, vitality, and structure of the social order. Death is the muse of our religions, philosophies, political ideologies, arts and medical technologies. It sells newspapers and insurance policies, invigorates the plots of our television programs, andjudging from our dependency on fossil fuels (84.5% of all U.S. energy consumption in 1995)even powers our industries. It is the barometer by which we measure the adequacy of social life, such as when we compare cross-cultural death and life expectancy rates to gauge social progress, compare national homicide rates to infer the stability of social structures, or compare death rates of different social groups to ascertain social inequalities . In fact, perhaps the very first evidence of

    Department Info Staff Undergraduate Post Graduate ... Home The sociologists in this department are actively involved in teaching and research related to gender, family, poverty, urban and rural development, politics, mortality, migration, inequality, mortality and a number of other topics in South Africa and the African continent. Sociology attempts to understand and explain how individual experience and events are linked to social structure, institutions, inequality, and group membership within a context of social relevance. Sociology students therefor study the structure of societies, institutions, and groups and explain how social change occurs within them. Sociologists develop strong analytical skills and theories about social behaviour. They apply these analytical skills and theories to solve social problems and inform social policy. Sociologists strongly believe in a critical approach to understanding social phenomena.

    Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminal Justice
    The basic objective of Sociology and Anthropology studies is to provide courses and course material which will aid in the understanding of human life in all of its manifestations, for both those interested in a career in the social sciences, and those interested in rounding out their liberal arts education. The basic tenet of Sociology and Anthropology studies is that a person is by nature a social creature and that any total understanding of human behavior and experience must include the social and cultural milieu which affects all peoples.
    The offerings are thus geared to show: The socio-cultural environment of humans;
    How a person adapts and adjusts to this environment;
    How humans interact with each other and become a part of social life; and
    The social structures and systems which are constructed to perpetuate this social life. Therefore individuals are seen not only in their personal or historical dimensions, but also as they actually exist, inextricably bound to others and their surroundings.
