PROGRESSIVE SOCIOLOGISTS NETWORK P S N PSN is a moderated list devoted to the examination of issues of theoretical and political importance to sociologists. PSN-CAFE is its unmoderated companion list. PROCEEDINGS We seek intellectually stimulating debates around issues such as the nature of the "New World Order," the globalization of capital, the redistribution of labor from the South to the North and its effects on labor struggles, racism, sexism, sexual politics, the resurgence of white supremacist groups, nationalism and ethnic struggles, the future of democracy in an increasingly polarized world and so forth. Last, but not least, we seek a debate about the relevance of Marxism for the theoretical and empirical investigation of the present historical conjuncture. We especially encourage the participation of graduate students through an atmosphere that is supportive as well as intellectual stimulating. Furthermore, PSN has an archive ftp PSN has hosted two important seminars and intends to host many more in the future.

Nearly one quarter century ago columnist Lewis Lapham made the following observation: There no longer exists a theater of ideas in which artists or philosophers can perform the acts of the intellectual or moral imagination. In nineteenth-century England Charles Darwin could expect On The Origin of Species to be read by Charles Dickens as well as by Disraeli and the vicar in the shires who collected flies and water beetles. Dickens and Disraeli and the vicar could assume that Mr. Darwin might chance to read their own observations. But in the United States in 1979 what novelist can expect his work to be read by a biochemist, a Presidential candidate, or a director of corporations; what physicist can expect his work to be noticed, much less understood, in the New York literary salons? ("A Juggernaut of Words," Harper's Magazine , June 1979: pp. 12-13). Conditions have hardly improved in 2003. Now in the supposed "Information Age" six out of ten American households do not purchase a single book and one-half of American adults do not read one. In 1965 when the Gallup Organization asked young people if they read a daily newspaper, 67 percent said yes; thirty-five years later, less than 30 percent answer affirmatively. And yet "they" say we are saturated with informational overload!

Description of the Sociology and Anthropology Department:
Sociology and Anthropology are closely related disciplines that aim to understand the patterns of human social behavior in alltheir historical and current diversity. We seek to understand how the myriad societies of the world work, and how people live, think, and believe, not only in our own society but in all human cultures.
Faculty:
Anthropologists: Jim Fisher
A South Asian expert, he is especially interested in India and Nepal. He spent more than a year north of the main Himalayan range in northwest Nepal carrying out his dissertation research in a village a two-week trek away from the nearest motorized transportation After getting his Ph D at the University of Chicago and teaching at Carleton for a number of years, he returned to Nepal several times to do further research, bringing two Carleton students to help him study the Sherpas on one of those trips. Between 1984 and 1986 he was a visiting Fulbright Professor in Nepal, where he helped start a new Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Tribhuvan University In 1989 and 1991, he and Nancy Wilkie led Carleton off-campus seminars to Nepal. Besides teaching introductory anthropology, Jim teaches courses on peoples living in India and Nepal, anthropological theory, and biography and ethnography. Pamela Feldman-Savelsberg
Specializes in the ethnographic study of sub Saharan Africa, gender, and health care She received her Ph D from Johns Hopkins University in 1990 and has taught in both Germany and the U S Her research on the symbolism of procreation and women's fear of infertility addresses changes in the holds of health care, religion, and politics in a highland kingdom of Cameroon. It has involved both archival research in Europe and extensive fieldwork in Africa. Pamela incorporates her African and European experiences in her classes. In addition to introductory anthropology, she teaches courses on gender, health and illness, ethnography of Africa, and ritual and politics in Africa.

Welcome to the Department of Sociology and Anthropology
B achelor of arts and bachelor of science degrees are offered with majors in Sociology and Anthropology. The Department of Sociology and Anthropology provides students with a wide variety of courses designed to further understanding and perception of social problems, social processes and differing cultures within and outside the U.S. S ociology attempts to understand human behavior through an examination of individuals within group settings, placing particular emphasis upon the social forces which influence behavior. A central goal of sociology is to have students gain insight into how their own lives are influenced by the social relationships around them. Virtually all human behavior is social behavior; thus, coursesin sociology examine in detail social groups of a variety of sizes and compositions. The anthropology major offers courses which help students understand humanity in all its various aspects.

Offers a minor in Anthropology. Features list of course offerings and contact details for faculty members. Arkadelphia, Arkansas.
    http://www.hsu.edu/dept/soc/program.html
About Our Programs Sociology is the systematic study of the social behavior of individuals as well as the working of social groups, organizations, cultures and societies. Study in sociology provides a scientific perspective for studying the effects of cultural and social forces on individuals, groups, and institutions. Students who major in sociology are given the opportunity to study in the field of family and gender relations, crime and delinquency, as well as sociological theory, research methodology, and statistics. Graduates are prepared for positions in industry, government, private and public agencies, and in education and research organizations. Sociology is an especially important major or minor for students entering any of the helping professions. For those who wish to become professional sociologists, an excellent preparation for graduate school is available. Students selecting the Human Services major typically desire positions in institutions, private and public, which provide direct services to disadvantaged groups in our society. Graduates may expect to work in a wide variety of settings, ranging from nursery schools to nursing homes. They will be confronting the human consequences of problems such as crime, poverty, alcoholism, child abuse, and discrimination. The curriculum includes required and elective courses, advising, and a supervised field experience in one or more human service agencies. Graduates will also have the choice of pursuing advanced study in fields such as social work, administration, counseling, psychology, and sociology.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT The Department of Sociology and Anthropology is a dual discipline department united by a common goal, that of understanding what people do. South Florida, a multilingual, culturally pluralistic metropolis with extensive international connections, is a living laboratory for faculty and students alike to pursue this goal. We offer a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and Anthropology, and Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Comparative Sociology. We teach courses in ethnic and racial minorities, comparative gender studies, social problems, marriage and the family, human sexuality, cultural ecology, quantitative and qualitative research methods, as well as introductory anthropology and sociology. We offer an excellent education in both job skills and in those required for forceful citizenship. Our graduate degrees emphasize social theory, research methodology, cultural analysis, ethnicity and immigration, family and gender, international development, and medical sociology. Graduate students come to us from all over the world: students have come from countries as distinct as Argentina, Bahamas, Brazil, Bulgaria, Colombia, China, Haiti, Iran, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Jordan, Macedonia, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru, Puerto Rico and Russia.
