To the Head of the Class or How I Learned to Escape Academia and Make a Difference in the Real World A Grinnell Alum Who Went on to Teach for America Shares Her Experiences By Amanda Davis While in her first year of teaching at Andrew Hill High School in San José, Adrienne Enriquez ‘98 was stopped by a school official and asked why she wasn’t in uniform. Confused, she explained that she didn’t realize that she, as a teacher, was required to wear the same uniforms as the students. It wasn’t the only time she was mistaken for a student. As a 21-year-old college graduate, Enriquez joined Teach for America (TFA). The program recruits college students of all majors to commit to a two-year teaching assignment in some of America’s most under-resourced school districts. TFA teachers are hired and paid as other first-year teachers. However, a TFA corps member is only hired after the school district has exhausted its pool of certified or credentialed teachers. This policy, made between TFA and individual school districts and enforced by law, helps concentrate TFA’s human resources on the most needy schools. The summer after TFA applicants are accepted, they participate in a six-week intensive training. In addition to learning about basic skills like making lesson plans and classroom management, part of the training entailed teaching at summer school sessions. Though Enriquez said that she felt “absolutely prepared” to go into the classroom after she completed her training, she said that in the years since she started teaching, the training program has improved dramatically. Enriquez says that she would feel ten times more prepared had she gone through the training offered now.

Rudrappa, a South-Asian-American Studies Scholar is also a sociologist who specializes in Gender and Immigration issues. Recent publications include, "Engendering Ethnicity: Gender, Normative Sexuality and Race Among Indian Immigrant Families in the United States.", revised paper submitted to Gender and Society; and "Disciplining Desire in Making Home: Engendering Ethnicity in Indian Immigrant Families in the United States," a chapter appearing in a book on Asian Americans, 2001. Women's rights, abortion, racism, unemployment, housing, povertythese are all issues that fall under the purview of the sociologist. If that makes it sound as if sociology is a discipline devoted to the problems of mankind, that's exactly right, said Aldon Morris, chairman of the sociology department of Northwestern University, Evanston. "Sociology mirrors the kind of important concerns that exist at any period in society," Morris said. "Sociology conducts studies that reflect societal concerns; it shows that human choices make a difference." He pointed out that among the growing areas in the forefront of sociology today are medical sociology and environmental sociology. The former "studies questions of diseasesocial aspects of how people deal with disease," Morris said. "Prominent in this field today is the social impact of AIDS on communities, families and friends". "Environmental sociology studies the relationship between environment and waste and toxic substances combined with socioeconomic factors." It includes, he added, "the prevalence of environmental racism: the notion that you're more likely to find areas of toxic waste in poor neighborhoods."

Chair: Dr. Karen Weiller University of North Texas Where are we - one year later? Sport is both commonplace and fashionable institution in our modern American culture. It is embroiled in our entertainment world, both on television and newspapers, and as Steele (1999) suggested, "sport often determines when meals will be served, who gets the car, and whether or not diplomatic relations proceed smoothly with other countries" (p. 70). Sport often combines spectacle with drama as we witness feats of human endeavors in often-extraordinary ways. Further, as Eitzen (1999) notes, there is a human desire to associate with something beyond self, whether that might be a team, an individual, or simply others with whom an allegiance to a team is shared. As many promote, sport has the capacity to build character, advance sportsmanship, hard work, and perseverance. Those who participate will learn to follow rules, respect one another and authority, as well as value the "sporting experience." Depending upon how one looks at our American society, and the sporting role within it, one might support the above view (assumed by those of a functionalist nature). Others might assume sport within our world only serves those in economic power (conflict approach). Following the events of September 11, 2001, the level of patriotism in our nation appeared to be at an all time high. The integrative nature of sport served to bring people together and clearly provided them with a feeling of unity, a sense of identification with their world as they had once known it and wished it to be again. Sport noticeably served this integrative function during a time when people desperately needed an opportunity for normalcy in their lives. Donovan (2001) noted, "And so, just like that, the games are back. The scores are right there in the morning paper. The highlights are on TV. America has returned to the business and the entertainment of baseball [sport], a week after the most heinous act of terrorism ever on its soil . . ." (p. 1).
