A r c h i v e d I n f o r m a t i o n Title IX: 25 Years of Progress June 1997 Achieving Success Under Title IX (continued) Increasing participation in athletics Title IX has helped girls and women participate in interscholastic and intercollegiate athletics in far greater numbers than they had in the past. When Title IX became law, dramatic change was needed to level the playing fields of this nation's schools and to change the perception of the place of girls and women on them. Just one year before the enactment of Title IX, in 1971, a Connecticut judge was allowed by law to disallow girls from competing on a boys' high school cross country team even though there was no girls' team at the school. And that same year, fewer than 300,000 high school girls played interscholastic sports. Today, that number is 2.4 million. The rise of women's basketball is illustrative of the dramatic changes that have taken place since the enactment of Title IX. In 1972, 132,299 young girls played high school basketball. In 1994-95 the number had increased to 412,576, an increase of over 300 percent. In the last two years, women's basketball has come of age with the gold-medal victory of the American women's basketball team at the 1996 Olympics, the increased media attention to the NCAA women's basketball tournament, and the development of two professional women's basketball leagues. Olympic Factsheets Women and the Olympics Women were traditionally prohibited from participating in the Ancient Olympic Games. They could not even enter the playing areas or the stadium as spectators. However, women held their own games at Olympia. Dedicated to the goddess Hera, the sister-wife of Zeus, these games grew out of traditional Greek fertility rites. According to some estimates these games even predated the exclusively male Olympic Games. At the turn of the century when the Modern Games came into being, much debate took place on the principles of women's participation. The founder of the Games Pierre de Coubertin, declared himself against women's participation expressing the opinion that if they could not play in every sport on equal terms with men they should not be allowed to take part at all. This view was opposed by several International Olympic Committee (IOC) members who supported the stand that women had the right to participate in the Games, competing in sports to suit their capabilities. The first breakthrough in women's participation took place at the second Olympics, the 1900 Paris Games. It was here that Charlotte Cooper became the first Olympic champion by winning the Gold Medal in the tennis championship. The only other sport allowed at these games for women was golf. Although swimming was added to the program in 1912, this symbolic gesture to women's sport continued until 1924 when the IOC decided to open its doors for a larger participation of women in the Games. The road between the proposal and the initiation was not an easy one as even in the Berlin Games in 1936 there were only four sports available to women, they were - swimming, fencing, athletics and gymnastics.

To those who knew that Bulldogs out-numbered all other collegiate players on the U.S.A.'s Olympic softball team, it was a moment that clarified just how great the Fresno State softball program has become. After all, Fresno State's softball teams have made 19 straight league playoff appearances since 1978, with nine women's College World Series appearances. Current Bulldog Laura Berg and alumnae Bulldogs Kim Maher, Julie Smith, and Shelly Stokes were members of the 15-player U.S. squad at the Olympics; alumna Martha Noffsinger-O'Kelley was an alternate. Bulldog head coach Margie Wright was one of two assistant coaches - and the only female coach - for the Olympic champions. "It's a dream come true. It's as big as it gets," Wright told The Fresno Bee after being named an assistant coach. "It is a great tribute to Fresno State's system that five current and former players were selected to the team." Three and a half years ago, Margie Wright was one of eight coaches chosen as national team coaches. In her first official role as an Olympic softball assistant coach, Wright directed the U.S.A. Cal Athletes Bring Home Five Olympic Gold Medals The Centennial Olympics in Atlanta provided several shining moments for the Golden Bears, who brought home a total of five gold medals. Cal alumnae Michele Granger and Gillian Boxx earned gold medals for the U.S. softball team. In the first softball game in Olympic history, the two starting pitchers were Cal alums. Granger pitched for the U.S. and Lisa Martinez for Puerto Rico. Former Berkeley students Mary Harvey, Joy Biefeld Fawcett and Brandi Chastain won the gold for their stellar performance on the U.S. women's soccer team. Mark Henderson, '91, won a gold medal and helped break the world record in the men's 400-meter medley swimming relay. Current student Oleg Kossiak picked up a bronze medal for the Ukraine men's gymnastic team. The games featured a total of 32 Cal Olympians and three coaches from Berkeley: Pete Cipollone, men's single crew coach; Peter Wright, head men's tennis coach for Ireland; and Erv Hunt, head coach for track and field. Hunt's role in deciding whether to allow Carl Lewis to run in the 4 x 100-meter men's relay for a potential 10th gold medal propelled him into the international spotlight. Board appointments are made by the City Council for a term of five years.
