A NOTE ON SOFTBALL 1N THE 2008 OLYMPICS
As you may or may not be aware, the 2008 games will be held in China.
Softball is one of three Olympic sports currently being considered to be dropped from that competition (also baseball) to make room for golf, 7-a-side Rugby (the new IOC Chairman played rugby in college) and Wushu (a form of Chinese martial arts).
If you think softball ought to be kept in the Olympics, then get word to the IOC. See below for an article on softball and how to respond.
This is not an internet hoax. Please forward this link

to other interested persons on your email list.
The ISF urges all softball lovers to respond:
SOFTBALL SUPPORTERS URGED TO SPEAK OUT TO IOC
The International Softball Federation (ISF) issued a response to the recommendation to eliminate softball, along with two other sports, from the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. The recommendation came from the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) Program Commission.
Part of the call to action in the ISF's comments is a worldwide campaign by softball supporters to voice their displeasure of this recommendation and their support of the game, especially at the Olympic level, to the IOC.

Japan are seeking Olympic glory
Women's fast-pitch softball is making its second appearance at the Olympics. BBC Sport's Jonathon Moore travelled to Sydney's Olympic Softball Centre to watch new favourites Japan in action. Blacktown may be one of the more isolated Olympic venues - but it failed to keep the fans away for Australia's make-or-break clash against Japan. Somewhat surprisingly for those who are new to it, softball remains one of the most popular world-wide sports - in terms of participation. According to the International Softball Federation , there are over 50m registered players. Oh, and the ball isn't soft. Pole position There are four different types of the game, though only one is played at the Olympics: women's fast-pitch.
Japan coach Taeko Utsugi
It resembles baseball in virtually every sense - except that the pitcher can only throw the ball under-arm. "Sounds a bit like rounders," you might be thinking. Well, you would be wrong.

    The Basics

    • Women's softball made its debut as an Olympic sport in the 1996 Games in Atlanta.
    • Eight teams will compete, each playing the other seven once. The four teams with the best records will advance to the semifinals.
    • The countries that have qualified for the 2000 Olympics are Australia, Canada, China, Cuba, Italy, Japan, New Zealand and the United States.
    Specifics
Softball was derived from baseball and is very similar to it. There are a few notable differences though.
Game Length The team with the most runs after seven innings wins. Extra Innings Beginning in the top of the 10th inning, the offensive team begins each half-inning with a runner on second base to speed the conclusion of the game. Safety base After the batter puts the ball in play, she runs to an orange base adjacent to first base. This safety base is used to prevent collisions between the runner and first baseman. • By Pamela Rice Hahn
It's almost time for Olympic Fever. The kids will barely be back in school when from September 15 to October 1, 2000, most of us will be glued to our television sets, watching the games taking place in Sydney, Australia.
The 2000 Summer Olympic Competition events fall within the following categories:
  • Featured Competition: Modern Pentathlon
    Debut Sport: Trampoline
    Individual: Men Only
    Individual: Women Only
Team Events: Men Only Team Events: Women Only Team Events: Men and Women Equestrian Debut Sport: Triathlon Featured Competition: Rowing
  • Featured Competition: Modern Pentathlon This event isn't for slackers. It also helps if you're a morning person, too. Competition starts at 5:30 A.M. with a pistol shoot at a bull's-eye target 10 meters away. After that, there's the dueling and fencing for "first blood," where a single touch wins. Then it's on to the pool, where competitors swim a 200-meter sprint; stroke style is each competitor's choice. Without even taking time to dry off, competitors head to the equestrian arena where they each coax an unfamiliar horse around and over a course of fences. Then, after "resting" atop that horse for a bit, there's a final, two-mile cross-country run. The entire competition takes about 12 hours.

Sports Campaign To Aid Buckeye Sports
The Ohio State University’s fiveyear, $1.23 billion “Affirm Thy Friendship” campaign, the Department of Athletics secured more than $138 million in private support. As a result of these efforts, Ohio State now boasts some of the finest competition and support facilities and numerous newly endowed scholarships. Success during this campaign has secured Ohio State’s place as not only the most comprehensive, but also one of the best and most financially stable athletics departments in the country. The Buckeyes have played host to NCAA regional baseball tournaments and have been selected to play host the men’s 2005 NCAA Frozen Four Ice Hockey Championship. However, there is much more to Ohio State athletics than football, baseball, basketball and hockey. Featuring 36 varsity sports with more than 1,000 participants, the department has led the way in creating opportunities. While Ohio State certainly is known around the country for its success on the football field and basketball court, it is less well known for its rich history of excellence in Olympic sports. The university has nurtured many notable athletes who went on to compete or coach in the Olympics. This year, the Ohio State Department of Athletics has launched the $45 million Buckeye Olympic Sports Campaign. The campaign will enable the Department of Athletics to partner with the Office of Student Affairs to secure private support for the project that will replace Larkins Hall, the student recreational center that is also utilized by the department of athletics.

    SPORTSMEN RECOGNITION
The national high level sport system aims at helping France teams to stand out at milestone international competitions (Olympic Games, World Championship, European Championship).
Since 1982 the Youth and Sports Ministry has been taking the census of the best sportsmen in Olympic sports or the sportsmen whose high level has been recognised by the National Commission for High Level Sport. This recognition is made by drawing up the National List of High Level Sportsmen (around 5 800 in 1998).
The admission to the lists is yearly.
There are different categories of high level sportsmen:
    SENIOR
stands for the groups preparing for major short term international events: Olympic games, World Championship, European Championship.
    ELITE
comprehends sportsmen of the SENIOR category who have had good results at milestone competitions such as the Olympic Games, the World Championship, the European Championship; the admission to the ELITE category is valid for two years.
    YOUTH
represents gifted sportsmen who are already taking part in international competitions and are preparing medium term sport events for three or four years.
