Polyacrylamide (PAM) soil conditioners offer growers a potential reduction in water use.
Soil compaction has been shown as a major limiting factor to increasing yields on sandy soils in South Australia. Deep ripping has been trialed in previous years and has been shown to reduce soil strength and increase root growth and yield of tubers. This has led to a refining of techniques for ripper use in this years field trials. Yield increases of up to 25% have been achieved by combining more intensive under-ripping prior to planting with under-ripping between the rows after planting. This more than doubled the increases recorded in previous trials. Over the past two years of the project, it has become evident that surface sealing, low water-infiltration and water-retention in sandy soil are not necessarily limiting yields on commercial pivots, but are affecting the industry in terms of water use efficiency. Ripping appears to play a key part in improving soil water relations in sandy soil types, but seeking new methods of improving efficiency in pivot-irrigation has also led to trials of a soil wetter and a Polyacrylamide (PAM) soil conditioner this year.

Crop residue cover and tillage practices play important roles in the way crops use water and also affect the ability of irrigation systems to replace that water. Tillage practices (NRCS Code 329) and crop residue management (NRCS Code 344) play important roles in the way irrigation systems perform and are managed. Tillage practices affect the way that water moves into and off of the soil (infiltration and runoff).

M a ny factors affect the performance of furrow irrigation systems. Physical conditions, such as soil texture, soil structure, field slope, field length, furrow shape and the amount of crop residue cover, all have some impact on the performance of the irrigation system. The way the system is managed, including the furrow flow rate, length of application time and irrigation frequency, also affects system performance. Irrigation system performance is often measured in terms of the percentage of the water applied that remains in the active root zone after the irrigation (application efficiency). Thus, deep percolation (water passing through the root zone) and runoff (tailwater)(NRCS Code 447) should be held to a minimum while supplying adequate water to the crop along the length of the furrow.

November 06, 2001 SOIL AND WATER MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION RECEIVES $25,000
The Deerwood Soil and Water Management Association in South Central Manitoba will receive $25,000 for the development of projects to enhance agriculture sustainability, Agriculture and Food Minister Rosann Wowchuk announced today. Funding will be provided under the Covering New Ground (CNG) program administered by Manitoba Agriculture and Food. In total, $1.2 million will be allocated to more than 170 projects provincewide. Projects supported by CNG range from sustainable crop, forage and livestock management to integrated pest management. "This innovative program helps producers and grassroots organizations develop and promote sustainable agricultural methods," Wowchuk said. "The projects being funded also allow producers to explore different ways of doing business, with a focus on improving economic and environmental results." The Deerwood Soil and Water Management Association will develop a variety of projects and activities related to water quality. Since the early 1980s, association members have constructed small dams to control flooding and water erosion along the Manitoba escarpment. Today, most of their work is related to the South Tobacco Creek watershed. "This organization works hard to educate area residents about important issues that affect their day-to-day lives and also have a major impact on their future," Wowchuk said. "It is essential that we support rural Manitobans in their efforts to develop sustainable agricultural methods that contribute to the health of their communities."

The purpose of Soil and Water Management (at Hill Air Force Base) is to provide information and guidance that will help building and development exist in harmony with the soils, geologic, and water resources of Hill Air Force Base and associated lands.
Description of resources Soils Types Surface soils at Hill AFB are composed primarily of sand, gravel, silts, and clays typical of the Weber Delta District (association with ancient Lake Boneville). The soils are mostly well drained (moderate to extreme permeability), having a slight to moderate erosion susceptibility. The surface layers are 7 to 17 inches thick. They for the most part are deficient in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and organic matter, with an average pH is 7.8. Generally, this type of soil is not ideal for plant growth. Native plants do well and thrive, but many other species require continuous care. Silty-sand is present to approximately 600 feet deep with some isolated clay lenses 5 to 30 feet below the surface. Soil resistivity ranges from 2,000 to 15,000 ohms/cm.
  • Because the hazard of wind and water erosion is high, maintaining vegetation cover by limiting disturbances reduces erosion. Impacted areas are revegetated as soon as possible.
