It consists of a central star the Sun and its family of nine planets, more than 60 moons, millions of rocky asteroids, and billions of icy comets Recent discoveries prove that our solar system is not alone. Astronomers have discovered planets orbiting several other stars. But current technology cannot reveal Earth-like planets the planets that are most likely to harbor life. As far as we know, then, Earth is the galaxy's only inhabited planet. Planet Formation Inner Planets

    The Solar System
Are you ready for a first-class tour of the Solar System ? Just sit back, relax, and prepare for a wonderful journey through the planets and outer space. Fasten your seatbelts - here we go! The Solar System consists of the Sun and all the objects that orbit around it. The Sun is the heaviest, largest, and hottest body in the Solar System. So far we know of nine planets in our Solar System . Perhaps more may be discovered when we are able to see farther and farther into deep space. These planets can be separated into two groups. The inner planets, the ones that orbit closest to the Sun, are Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. The outer planets - Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto - orbit much farther away. Each of the nine planets has two ways of moving. Every planet spins, or rotates, on its own axis . (An axis is an imaginary line that goes through the poles.) The time it takes for a planet to rotate is known as a " day ". Since the Earth spins on its axis every 24 hours, OUR day is 24 hours long. A day on Jupiter is the shortest - a little less than 10 hours. However, the planet Venus travels very slowly. One day on Venus would last for 243 of our Earth days! The planets also revolve around the Sun. The path that each planet follows around the Sun is called its

  • Experience an amazing variety of worlds Run the gauntlet of floating rocks and boulders in the asteroid belt Encounter the icy comets that wander through the outer Solar System
  • Solar System Jigsaw Can you build the Solar System? WHAT TO SEE The Sun The Sun is a star that lives at the centre of the Solar System. Its huge gravity holds the planets in place. The planets The planets all revolve around the Sun. There are nine in total - Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Moons Moons rotate around their parent planet. Earth has one moon, but some planets have over 30. Only Mercury and Venus do not have any moons. Asteroids Asteroids are rocky bits of debris up to 1,000km (620 miles) across. Most live in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. They are the remnants from early planets that collided and were torn apart. Comets Comets are dirty snowballs of ice and dust that revolve around the Sun in long orbits. When they approach the Sun they heat up, leaving a trail of gas behind them, which looks like a tail.

    Solar System
v 1.4 This applet represents the solar system, including the four major moons of Jupiter and our own, and a couple of comets. The On/Off button starts and stops the applet. Because of differences of scale, the inner planets ( Mercury - Mars ) and the outer planets ( Jupiter - Pluto ) are on separate screens. To switch to and from the latter, press the In/Out button. To see/hide the orbits, use the Orbit button. The and buttons allow you to resize the display to convenient dimensions. For a little more excitement, pressing the Ship button will toggle the appearance of a pesky space ship. The planets, their orbits, and their velocities are approximately in scale with each other, but the planet scale is much larger than than the orbit scale, and the sun is not in scale with either. Thanks to Luis Fernandes for his orbit suggestion! The 2000 update modernizes the Java code without changing the operation of the applet. Eric Gans gans@humnet.ucla.edu
