Restocking with cultured individuals is often seen as an impractical fishery management tool for trochus due to the expense of the hatchery and rearing systems needed to raise juveniles to a size where they survive in acceptable numbers when released on reefs (Heslinga 1981; Nash 1988; Amos 1991, 1997; Crowe et al. 1997; Lee et al. 1998). iWon Travel Oceania Solomon Islands Powered by HISTORY and CULTURE History Culture History It is thought that the first inhabitants of the Solomon Islands arrived from the north-west about 30,000 years ago, but the first organized agricultural people didn't settle until about 4000 BC, bringing with them knowledge of sailing, crops and animal breeding. Between that time and about 1600 AD, westward migration by Polynesians and the arrival of the Lapita people from the east created a heady mix of cultural practices in the region. Finding the main islands already occupied by Melanesians, the newcomers settled on the smaller, isolated islands, eliminating any small populations that happened to be in the way. For the next four hundred years, these outlying areas became the focus of Tongan and Tokelauan aggression, resulting in a natural fear of strangers. By the 19th century, this fear produced the widespread habit (rarely practiced today) of attacking strangers on sight. Due largely to bad mapping, Europeans stayed away from (that is, couldn't find) the Solomons for the next century and a half. In 1767, British captain Philip Cartaret stumbled through the island group. He couldn't believe that he'd rediscovered the Solomons, but the people who followed - an assortment of British, French and American explorers, whalers and traders - certainly left their mark in the area. Large-scale traders cut short the Islands' 'Great Peace' with their shonky business practices (robbery, murder) and diseased bodies. The islanders quickly grew to hate the traders, and would often kill any white person they saw. Add firearms into this mix of headhunting, 'labour recruitment' (blackbirding) and distrust, and the Solomon Islands quickly gained the reputation for being the most inhospitable place in the Pacific. Even the unstoppable missionaries watched their step.

From Lonely Planet Lonely Planet guide to Solomon Islands and the world Order Now Solomon Islands Culture Solomon Islander crafts are important for both traditional and decorative reasons. Carvings can be found throughout the island group, and can range from ornate ritual bowls in Makira/Ulawa Province to miniature canoe souvenirs in Western Province, Malaita, Ulawa, Santa Ana and Nggela islands. Music is played throughout the Solomons using bamboo pipes in a variety of forms. Pipes are played either in sets or singly as wind-instruments. Hitting lengths of bamboo with a rubber thong produces sounds ranging from a ukulele twang to a double-bass boom. 'Kastom' (custom) is used to refer to traditional beliefs and land ownership. Despite the predominance of devout Christian belief, traditional practice is still followed to a great extent, especially among the 75% of Solomon Islanders living in villages. Dances, songs and stories depicting the past are common. These usually celebrate war, hunting, the natural world or the harvesting of crops. In addition, some islanders believe in various forms of magic. Most common is the belief that after death, a person's spirit lives on for a time in sharks, birds or reptiles. This animal becomes sacred for a time, and tabu (forbidden) to eat. Ancestors, it seems, are particularly fond of returning as sharks.
