Mr. President, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen: I have the honour to deliver this statement on behalf of the Prime Minister of Solomon Islands, the Honourable Manasseh Sogavare. A Cease-fire Agreement was signed by the conflicting parties on 3 August 2000. This agreement provides an environment conducive for Peace Talks to proceed. Preliminary peace negotiations have been undertaken and the actual peace talks are currently underway. My government is therefore firmly committed to ensuring peace and security for all our citizens, foreign friends and visitors. We are equally determined to rebuild our economy and welcome those who wish to assist in this endeavour. In this regard may I call on our development partners to adopt a more positive attitude towards my government's genuine attempts to restore taw and order, thus ensuring peace, security, and stability. During this difficult period Solomon Islands, where appropriate, needs your assistance. Mr. President;

Resisting exploitation in the Solomon Islands
An interview with Ian Aujare
World's largest open-pit tin mine, Ariquemes, Rondonia, Brazil
From the British colonial occupation to World War II battles, the Solomon Islands have endured many waves of powerful, uninvited and exploitative guests. The most recent are Malaysian-owned logging corporations, which are behind the massive deforestation of the nation. These foreign firms stand accused of everything from desecrating sacred sites to soil erosion to the pollution of the sea and local water supply. Solomon Islander Ian Aujare is an organizer for the Zazao Environmental Rights Organization which is working in Santa Isabel Province to address the grave environmental impact there of the globalized logging industry. He recently addressed the United Nations during the historic first session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. C.V.: How should Witness readers understand the context for the Solomon Islands, particularly Santa Isabel Province, which the Zazao Environmental Rights Organization represents? I.A.:

Solomon Islands Travel Where to Go in Solomon Islands GIZO Though only a tenth the size of the capital, Honiara, Gizo is considered the Solomons' second "city." It's the business and administrative center of the Western Solomons: There are several flights a day to the town. Gizo has an adequate hotel and several clean, comfortable guest houses, plus banks, a post office, a row of Chinese stores, restaurants and other amenities. Outer islanders pull their canoes up on the beach and sell produce from stalls along the main street. Gizo is probably best known to U.S. visitors as a jump-off point for visiting PT-109, captained by Lt. John F. Kennedy during World War II: The boat was sunk off nearby Plum Pudding Island. Either of the dive shops in Gizo can take you there. You can also don scuba gear and explore the Japanese transport ship Toa Maru, perusing the saki bottles in the galley and two-man tanks in the hold. Those less interested in diving can hike around the coast past Gizo's tiny jail to

A Canadian museum worker relocates her family to a remote part of the South Pacific. ateline: Edmonton, June 1990. The letter began, "Answer yes or no, how would you like to be Cultural Affairs Adviser for the Western Province of the Solomon Islands?" Although happily employed, I was tempted by what sounded like a fascinating job. Then after several pages of description, I read, "Just one thing: Don't get pregnant again, because cuso won't place you if you have more than two children." My easy response: "I'd love to but it's too late! I'm expecting number three."
Dateline: Ottawa, September 1990. I was in Ottawa on business and thought it would be interesting to drop into the cuso office to discuss the project. While I was there, they received a fax from the Solomons office of cuso saying, "Three children, no problem!" Before I knew it, my application was being processed.
Dateline: Tambea Resort, Guadal-canal, Solomon Islands, August 1991. Mere days after arriving, we were still overwhelmed by the magnificent scenery, sauna-like temperatures and cultural contrasts. Then my husband was stung by a stingray in a shallow lagoon; I had visions of widowhood and an immediate repatriation to Canada. But my husband survived, and we and our children stayed in the Islands. The stingray was but the first of many challenges during the next two educational and enriching years.

War and peace
They stand as a poignant legacy of the Solomon Islands' wartime role, but the numerous military wrecks are also alive with fascinating marine life, as John Bantin discovers

The Solomon Islands - and particularly Guadalcanal - were the stage on which the turning-point of the Pacific War was enacted. Lying north of Australia and east of the other great landmass that includes Papua New Guinea, the islands saw some of World War Two's fiercest fighting.
The Imperial Japanese war machine had swept round the Pacific rim and was threatening the security of Australasia itself. It was here that the Americans and her allies determined to turn the tide of the war.
The conflict, which later became known as the Battle of Guadalcanal, mainly revolved around the "Tokyo Express" - nightly high-speed convoys of ships attempting to supply the beleaguered Japanese occupiers. So many ships were sunk that the channel between Guadalcanal and the northern islands is now called Ironbottom Sound.
At one time, more than 17,000 US marines faced 12,000 Japanese troops on the very small island of Guadalcanal, separated only by impenetrable jungle. It became a battle for air superiority. Today you can still see the remains of some of the planes - Zeros and Dauntlesses, Wildcats and B17s - lying in the undergrowth or on the seabed.

POPULATION TRENDS AND THEIR IMPACT ON HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT AND PLANNING A PAPER PREPARED FOR THE LEADERS SEMINAR ON POPULATION, DEVELOPMENT AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH ISSUES ON 10 TH JULY 2001 POPULATION TRENDS AND THEIR IMPACT ON HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT AND PLANNING Ladies and gentlemen, let me welcome all of you once again In 1999, the Solomon Islands conducted a census with very generous support from the EU. As you know, the results of this census will be officially released on World Population Day 2001, that is to-morrow. Since very little reliable information is available from other sources, the profile of the country that I will present here is to a very large extent based on the results of the 1999 census as well as previous censuses. The substance of my presentation will be on the implications of recent population trends for policy making and planning in the immediate future, for I notice that most of you in this room are policy makers in your own rights. Present characteristics of the population
