The aim of the DISA project, which is expected to last three years, is to make accessible to scholars and researchers world-wide, South African material of high socio-political interest which would otherwise be difficult to locate and use. In addition the project aims to provide experience and develop knowledge and expertise in digital imaging amongst archivists and librarians in this country. It is intended that DISA be the first in a series of projects dealing with South Africa's fascinating social and political history. If successful, the Committee hopes to tackle more ambitious projects in subsequent phases.

    Overview
This document sets out to describe how the Internet was started in South Africa. It is a ramble around some of the background events that caused this to happen. There might be little apparent logic, nor any good sequence, in this document - perhaps time will permit some tidying up to be done. So be it, but everything described in this text had an influence on the startup of the Internet in South Africa. The email link used the Fidonet mailing system as a transport mechanism to exchange email between the Control Data Cyber computer at Rhodes University and a Fidonet gateway run by Randy Bush of Portland, Oregon, in the USA. The Fidonet system in the USA had a gateway into the Internet, and to many people's amazement, including the group at Rhodes, the system worked and stayed working. With the success of that internet link between Rhodes and UCT, a second internet link was established to UND. The technical work at that end was done by Alan Barrett. Note the lower-case internet, this was not part of the world-wide Internet yet.

    Egypt
Egypt is Africa with a culture that developed on the continent of Africa. In the past there has been a tendency to separate ancient Egypt from the rest of Africa and to group it with ancient Greece, Rome and other cultures around the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. This can be partly attributed to general ignorance about Africa and its cultures. Also, the early Egyptologists isolated Egypt from Africa as they debated that a non-African population formed the roots of the Egyptian civilisation.
In summary it can be said, that within the large family of African peoples, the ancient Egyptians evolved in the particular conditions of the Nile and its environs. In the process they established a truly brilliant civilisation on the continent of Africa where their influence spread far beyond the borders of their country.
    Egypt in South Africa
Various individuals and bodies, from as early as the late 19th century, donated ancient Egyptian artefacts to the SA Cultural History Museum (SACHM) in Cape Town, South Africa. A prime example here is the Kafr-Tarkhan collection of Egyptian artefacts excavated by Sir Flinders Petrie during the 1911-1912 and 1912-1913 seasons on behalf of the British School of Archaeology in Egypt (BSAE). Graves from the Predynastic to the Roman period were found. The collection dates mainly from the early Dynastic Period (3050-2686 BCE) of the Egyptian civilisation.
On arrival in South Africa, the artefacts first went to the South African Museum (SAM), which had been established in the 1820's. Eventually the SAM became a natural history museum that includes a department of ethnology. In 1966 the SACHM was established, and the relevant collections of the SAM, including the Egyptian collection, were transferred to the new museum. In 1999, the above-mentioned two museums, together with several others, were amalgamated under the auspices of the new

Safari . The word simply means "travel" in Swahili, but for many, it alludes to wonders first envisioned in childhood: sweeping savannas, big snarling cats, thundering herds of elephant and wildebeest. Like its meaning, the word roams the imagination, becoming other words and places, like serengeti, sahara , or Kilimanjaro . Safari crosses the landscape of the mind, until it finally merges with the name of the great continent itself, Africa. Geographia invites our readers to explore all the traditional African safari destinations, but the game parks and wildlife reserves are only the beginning of the adventure. The second largest continent on Earth, Africa contains more countries than any other. With a history of human habitation that begins with the oldest known ancestors of man, the continent's cultural wealth easily matches its natural attractions. Empires rose and fell in Africa thousands of years before the European powers began their protracted exploitation of the continent, and much pre-colonial culture remains intact.

While all of its diverse regions offer ample opportunities for adventure travel, the focus in South Africaas in much of sub-Saharan Africais the safari. In addition to possessing two of the world's most renowned wildlife reserves, the Kruger and the Kalahari Gemsbok National Parks, the country contains over a dozen smaller regional parks and reserves. In addition, with its excellent road and rail systems, its abundance of top-rated accommodations, and its bountiful farmlands and vineyards, South Africa allows visitors ample opportunity for more luxurious comfort along with adventuresome excitement. South Africa is located, as one might expect, on the southern tip of Africa. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the west, the Indian Ocean on the south and east. Along its northern border, from west to east, lie Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe, and to the northeast are Mozambique and Swaziland. Wholly-enclosed by South Africa, and situated in its eastern central plain, is the independent kingdom of Lesotho.

Anywhere on the coasts of Asia, America and Africa you can find a fort, a church, a geographical name or a family name, that come from Portugal. These are the remains of the first European country that explored the world in search of spices and souls. Afonso de Albuquerque's dream, was an infusion of Portuguese blood in each of the colonies. As the Dutch Governor Antonio Van Diemen said in 1642 : "Most of the Portuguese in Asia look upon this region as their fatherland, and think no more about Portugal" In XVth century a small nation as Portugal began to explore the Atlantic ocean , since 1415 (conquest of Ceuta, Morocco) the Portuguese explored the African's coasts in search of a road to the East; and in 1487 Bartolomeu Dias doubled the cape of Good Hope. After ten years (1497-1499) Vasco de Gama arrived in India (18 May 1498), and opened a new trading route between Europe and Asia.
