New FBI Proposal for Bay Area "Counterrorism Task Force" Revives ADL-FBI Spy Scandal
There have been reports in the press that tend to indicate that the FBI would investigate "lawful political, religious or social activities even when there is no reasonable indication of a crime." This is inaccurate and misleading. The counterterrorism task forces that are operating throughout the United States in other cities all operate based on attorney general guidelines. Those guidelines are established to ensure that all investigations are based on a reasonable indication that a crime has occurred or may occur. ACLU of Wisconsin Opposes "Official English" Resolution
May 13, 2002 Mr. Ken Simons
    Board Chairman
    Brown County Board
    100 North Jefferson Street
Green Bay, WI 54305 RE: Resolution Resident Responsibility Act of 2002
Dear Mr. Simons: The purpose of this letter is to address our concern and opposition to the above resolution making English the official language of Brown County. From its inception, the United States has been a multilingual nation. At the time of the nation's founding, it was commonplace to hear as many as twenty languages spoken in daily life, including Dutch, French, German and numerous Native American languages. As a historical note, the Articles of Confederation were printed in German, as well as English. In Wisconsin our legislature in 1848 passed a measure publishing our constitution in English, German and Norwegian. Just as languages other than English have always been part of our history and culture, debate over establishing a national language date back to the country's beginning. John Adams proposed the Continental Congress in 1780 that an official academy be created to "purify, develop, and dictate usage of," English. His proposal was rejected as undemocratic and a threat to individual liberty. Nonetheless, restrictive language laws have been enacted periodically since the late 19

AFRICAN IGC/APC CONFERENCES From: "Arthur R. McGee" Since the IGC/APC Networks are already geared towards the types of issues and subjects that I normally compile lists for on the Internet, BITnet, Usenet, and BBSs, this will be a list of conferences available via the APC networks dealing with issues/subjects that interest me, Arthur R. McGee. :-D If you don't already know what those subjects and issues are, you will find out soon enough. :-D I will say that my main interests in some way relate to people of African descent around the world. For those folk who are like minded, you should find something that interests you to some degree. Hopefully, I have saved you some effort and work, by making this list easily available. :-) Please let me know of any updates, additions, corrections or suggestions that you might have. Thank you very much. Peace. The absolute latest versions of all of my lists are always available via anonymous FTP from ftp.netcom.com in directory pub/amcgee. The absolute latest versions of all the Black/African related lists are always available by sending email to or fingering the following account: mcgee@epsilon.eecs.nwu.edu Warning: all of the lists will come back to you as one concatenated file.
