SPECTACLED BEAR Tremarctos ornatus Description: The spectacled bear is a small black bear with cream-colored facial markings around its eyes that give it its name. Females weigh about 150 pounds and males may reach 250 pounds. They have a total body length of 60 to 72 inches. Range: The spectacled bear is found in Venezuela, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. Habitat: It lives in a variety of forested Andes mountain habitats, ranging in elevation from 500 to 14,000 feet. The spectacled bear is an excellent tree climber and forages in the trees. It is most often found in what is called the cloud forest, a lush, misty ecosystem of the Andes. The spectacled bear is thought to play a vital role in the forest by scattering seeds through its droppings, a function called seed dispersal. Diet: The favorite food of the spectacled bear is fruit and it will also eat varieties of bromeliads, rodents and insects. When feeding in fruit trees the spectacled bear will bend back many branches forming a "nest" that will serve as a feeding platform and a daytime refuge. When a spectacled bear strays into human farmland it is often shot on sight because it is considered a pest species for both the farmer's crops and livestock. Social Organization: Little is known about the behavior of this shy forest bear. It is believed that they are mostly nocturnal and spend the day time sleeping in self-made tree nests, large tree root cavities or on ground beds. At sites of abundant food, as with fruiting trees, several bears can be seen feeding in close proximity with very little interaction between them. Only mothers with young have been seen traveling together so it is assumed spectacled bears lead solitary lives.

South America finds its way to Tucson zoo By Carol Romero A three-acre South American animal exhibit will open in early 1997 at the Reid Park Zoo. Zoo officials think the addition will increase attendance that will result in raising the educational valu e of all of the exhibits. The City of Tucson could gain research, conservation and educational capabilities from the planned exhibit. "We do not know exactly how many animals there will be at the opening," said Vivian Warren, zoo education curator. "We are still in the process of locating animals from around the country." All of the animals being acquired for the new addition have been in other zoos within the United States. The zoo trades, purchases and borrows animals from other zoos to enhance the collection. The animals that will be on display include a spectacled bear, anteater, llama, rhea, capybara, caiman, tapir, jaguar, piranha, sloth, water fowl and South American bird species, Warren said. The zoo already has the tapir, llama, caiman, sloth and many birds that will be on display in 1997. They are currently being housed behind the scenes until the opening of the new area. All animals that enter the zoo go through a quarantine period of at least 30 days to ensure the health of all other animals. Quarantine is conducted in a health center at the zoo. After quarantine , animals are introduced to their new homes under the supervision of the zoo's staff.

A pinky is so young that it hasn't yet grown fur or a tail. A fuzzy has both fur and tail. "There's enough tail to hold onto [with a fuzzy]," Franken explained, and condors "have very sharp beaks." Eminent chefs such as Georges Perrier might never have experienced the daunting dietary concerns of Franken, a keeper at the Philadelphia Zoo. At birth, each cub weighed approximately 2.3 pounds. The litter represents the first offspring between 10-year-old mother JoJo and 9-year-old Rakata (RAH-ka-ta), and the first birth of the endangered species at the zoo since 1992. The cubs remain off public exhibit. On February 20, the cubs weighed just over 17 pounds. From nose to tail, one is 34 inches long and the other is 35 inches long. The cubs are very strong and feisty and are resistant to being held by staff for weigh-ins or other necessary procedures. Nursing bouts are frequent and both are eating very well. JoJo continues to show excellent, attentive maternal care. What the birth means for the Sumatran tiger Species Survival Plan (SSP)* The birth of the cubs is very significant for the SSP. Only one Sumatran tiger birth occurred in North American zoos last year to date. Zoos have been struggling to breed tigers because of an aging tiger population, a limited number of breeding animals and a low birth rate. The current North American population of Sumatran tigers consists of only 31 males and 24 females in 27 institutions. In order to maintain a genetically, viable pool, the population must grow.

FIELD CONSERVATION Madagascar Fauna Group Type of Program: Cooperative Conservation Program, headquartered at the Zoo. Partners: 38 other North American, European, Australian and African zoos and related organizations return captive-born lemurs to the wild , operating a small zoo, field station and conservation center, and supporting other research and education projects. The San Francisco Zoo serves as headquarters for an international consortium called the Madagascar Fauna Group There are 38 other zoos and related organizations which participate in the MFG, and we are pleased to lead such a distinguished group of zoos and conservationists. Why Madagascar? Madagascar is an island off the Southeast coast of Africa. It is about the size of California and Oregon combined, and it is considered by scientists worldwide to be a priority for conservation efforts. What does the MFG do? To enhance protection of parks and nature reserves, including the Betampona Natural Reserve, site of our ground-breaking lemur release project. To promote and fund field research on animals, plants and habitats.
