American Indian Contributions to the World
15,000 Years of Invention and Innovation
American Indians of North, Meso-, and South America were the first to cultivate seventy-five percent of the many varities of food grown in the world today. Many pharmaceuticals in current use were first discovered by Indian healers centuries before the Europeans came to the Americas. Freeze-dried food, syringes, rootbeer, rubberized clothing, beef jerky, and many of the tenets of the United States Constitution are only a few of the independent inventions and original discoveries that American Indian people gave to the world. The Encyclopedia of American Indian Contributions to the World is the first A to Z reference book that extensively details and documents the inventiveness of American Indians. The book:
    • contains over 450 separate entries ranging from abacus to zoos.
    • covers the contributions of North, Meso-, and South American Indians.
    • mentions over 180 different tribes and linguistic groups.

Our" Schools linking programme" aims to
: link communities around zoos to communities around in-situ projects, through their local schools. It can involve running workshops in schools, in both communities, e-mail and postal communications and teacher exchanges. We also have resource packs for each country we visited, to be used by the European schools that get involved. Photo: Class 5 at St Cuthbert's RC Primary School in Blackpool. To develop this programme and trial the initiative, Nan ran over 11 sessions with Class 5 at St Cuthbert's RC Primary School in Blackpool, covering topics such as Introduction to South America, jungle products, myths and legends, world habitats, animals adaptations, sustainability, waste and recycling and transport. Our work together culminated in a debate about how to use rainforest and the production of the Class 5 “Big Book”. Photo: South American brought to Blackpool The children really embraced the project and the workshops were fun for all taking part, while at the same time developing and strengthening teamwork and communication skills.

California Veterinarian Wins American Veterinary Medical Association Award
Sometimes, the best things in life are unexpected. The year was 1955 and a freshly minted veterinarian, Dr. Murray Fowler, had just moved to the San Fernando Valley in California, eager to begin life as an equine practitioner. Destiny intervened, however, and his first patient was not a horse, but an abscess-afflicted camel starring in "The Ten Commandments." Nearly five decades since that fateful meeting, Dr. Fowler is being recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) with its Animal Welfare Award for his lifelong devotion to zoo and exotic animals, at the AVMA's Animal Welfare Forum in Milwaukee, WI, October 11. After three years in private practice, Dr. Fowler answered a call to teach and began his appointment as instructor of large animal surgery at the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of California, Davis. Initially teaching courses in therapeutics, large animal surgery laboratory and clinical toxicology, Dr. Fowler combined his interests in plant taxonomy and photography, "spicing up" lectures with a slide collection that would eventually include more than 63,000 photographs. The enthusiastic teacher was also an ambitious student. "I made a pact with myself," Dr. Fowler said, "to audit at least one class every quarter and to take every biology and wildlife management class the university offered." No small endeavor, considering the university's lengthy class list.

The conservation con "Zoos make much of the tiny numbers of animals reintroduced into the wild, but reintroduction opportunities are nearly always flawed or impractical". Roger Mugford, Consultant Animal Psychologist to CAPS. Reintroducing animals to the wild Of the 5,926 species (mammals, birds, reptiles and others) classified as threatened or endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, only around 120 species are involved in international zoo breeding programs, and from these just 16 species have been reintroduced to the wild... with varying degrees of success. The costs, both financial and to the animals themselves, of captive breeding conservation programmes are astronomically high. For example, when the black footed ferret was reintroduced to the wild under a programme supervised by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, the eventual cost was estimated to be around $400,000 per individual survivor! Added to this was the cost in suffering to the animals. Reintroduced ferret populations can experience a mortality rate as high as 90% during the first year of release. And of those reared in indoor cages, up to 91% may die within the first year of release. ( *a In a South American zoo programme, this time involving the golden lion tamarin (a primate), death rates were also high. Of over 100 golden lion tamarins released into the wild, only about 30 survived. While their offspring fared somewhat better, there were other more significant problems for the programme. In 1991 a zoo bred tamarin, awaiting release to the wild, was found to be carrying the lethal arenavirus. This virus was unknown in the locality and could have devastated the wild population of tamarins and other primate species which would have lacked any immunity to it. The virus may have been spread to the zoo tamarins by mice which they were fed on while in captivity. The infected tamarin had been just 3 days away from release when diagnosed... (

There are about 1,500 zoological gardens in the world, 14 of them being located in Russia. YESTERDAY... Three thousand years ago, in the capital of ancient China one could see a lot of wonders among which was the famous "Park of Reason". Various stones from different corners of the country, wonderful plants and animals could be found there, including birds and beasts, giant snakes and lizards. The park was proud of a wooly rhinoceros, being probably the last specimen on the globe, of curious monkeys, several deer able to change their colour twice a year, and an unusual animal that resembled the bear. Europen civilization will know about them in the nineteenth century only. In the Middle Ages, some rich feudal lords began collecting animals, sometimes exotic ones - such as elephants or monkeys, establishing menageries and even aquariums. Organization of these primitive menageries marked the beginning of the epoch of zoological gardens. In the fifteenth century such menageries became numerous, especially in Italy, one of them being established in Vatican, attached to the Pope's residence. In the United Kingdom, one of the first menageries was organized in the early XIIth century by order of King Henry I - to house royal lions and leopards. Several decades later it grew large enough to be transferred from the royal residence of Windsor to London where it was placed on a bank of the Thames river. In 1255, this collection of animals was replenished with an elephant.
