The South Carolina Education Lottery has been selling chances for a year now. Total revenues for the lottery are about $869 million. Based on the latest information, about 58 percent of that money goes into prizes, 7 percent goes into administration, 7 percent goes into commissions for ticket sellers, and 29 percent goes into education. Out of the education money — a total of $252 million — public K-12 schools will receive only $32.9 million. That is about 3.8 percent of the total lottery money collected during the last year or so. The owners of South Carolina's convenience stores are getting more lottery money than are South Carolina's public K-12 schools.

State ranks high in education reform but budget cuts threaten progress
By Cindy Landrum
EDUCATION WRITER
clandrum@greenvillenews.com

South Carolina's efforts to improve academic standards, teacher quality and early childhood education got high marks on a national report card released Monday, but experts said budget problems could threaten progress in all areas.
The sixth-annual Quality Counts report, published by the magazine Education Week, gives South Carolina a B for improving teacher quality — tying the state with Massachusetts for third in the nation, behind only North Carolina and Connecticut.
South Carolina made a B+ in academic standards and accountability, ranking it 11th in the country.
And, although a letter grade was not given to the state's early childhood education program, the report said South Carolina's system was "more substantial than ever before." "South Carolina actually does very well and ranks high among other states in most categories, but budget cuts will be an issue," said Greg Orlofsky, a research associate

Teacher Visits Hit Home
Many school districts have established successful teacher home visit programs. Home visitations by teachers get parents involved in their child's education and they let parents and children know how much teachers care. Education World writer Sherril Steele-Carlin talks with administrators about how home visit programs work. Included: Tips for starting a program plus links to Web resources with more information. Principal Charlie Denis believes that teacher home visitation programs can make a real difference. "Parents, teachers, and students were very positive in their response," Denis said of a pilot visitation program at Saddle Ranch Elementary School in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. "Parent-teacher communication has been a strong point of our school" since teachers there participated in a one-year home visitation program, Denis told Education World. Programs that provide time and funding for teachers to visit students and parents on their own turf are a way for teachers to learn more about their students, get the parents more involved in their kids' education, and bridge cultural gaps that might occur between student and teacher. Most teachers report their home visits have a lasting effect on the child, the parent, and parent-teacher communication.
