Through June 15, 2003 Clement Greenberg: A Critic's Collection
Spanning over five decades of American art, the Greenberg collection is made up of those objects the critic, reviewer and intellectual chose to live with and to keep. The collection begins with a wonderful work by Jackson Pollock - created and given to Greenberg as a birthday gift - In addition to Pollock's drawing, works by Helen Frankenthaler, Hans Hofmann and Adolph Gottlieb, represent Abstract Expressionism. Notable color field works by Kenneth Noland, Jules Olitski and others from the 1960s are included. The latest movement represented in depth in the collection is what Greenberg titled "post-painterly abstraction," represented by works of Walter Darby Bannard, Darryl Hughto, Larry Poons and others. Clement Greenberg: A Critic's Collection is organized by the Portland Art Museum and made possible with funds provided by Tom and Gretchen Holce with additional project support from Carol and John Hampton.

Since 1977, the Family Practice Residency at Palmetto Health Richland has taken pride in training more than 200 successful family practice physicians for South Carolina and the nation. About half of our residents are from South Carolina. Others come from across the country, attracted by our urban community practice, affiliations with the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, our multi-skilled faculty and an excellent geographic location.
Family Practice Center
Our venerable family practice center is located in its own facility adjacent to Palmetto Health Richland. We are very excited by fast-track construction of a gorgeous state-of-the-art 33,000 square foot facility located on the corner of the hospital campus and scheduled for completion in January 2003. We aim to function as a large private group practice, as we combine quality healthcare delivery and state-of-the-art equipment with modern management procedures. We serve as a major healthcare provider to the community in a great setting for primary care education. An integrated computerized network is used for appointment scheduling and medical record documentation. All patient rooms, resident offices, nursing areas and study areas are fully equipped with computers for instant access to patient records, prescription writing and lab results. We boast great online teaching resources through Palmetto Health Richland's excellent infomatics service. Telemedicine capabilities are also available with our rural office in Winnsboro, S.C.

http://www.rmh.edu/residency/fellowships.html
The fellowship program in endocrinology at Palmetto Health Richland is a combined program with the William Jennings Bryan Dorn Veterans' Hospital and is directly affiliated with the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. The accredited two-year program accepts one fellow at each level. All applicants should be board eligible in internal medicine. This fellowship program prepares the physician to be competent in endocrinology and to function as a consultant. The Clinical Environment
Palmetto Health Richland and the VA Hospital serve as the major sites of clinical instruction. Both medical centers provide state-of-the-art facilities serving diverse medical and surgical specialties. Fellows are instructed by five full-time faculty members who supervise a large referral practice. The majority of clinical instruction occurs in the outpatient setting, reflecting the major venue of healthcare delivery within the endocrine subspecialty. Fellows participate in a weekly endocrine/diabetes clinic at the VA Hospital and a daily referral clinic at the department of medicine offices adjacent to Palmetto Health Richland. The fellows see both the usual and unusual endocrine problems at both institutions. The Research Environment
The division of endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism provides outstanding opportunities for basic and clinical research. Faculty members within the division have developed nationally recognized research programs in male reproductive endocrinology. An established endocrine research laboratory offers training in molecular biology, cell biology and enzymology. Each fellow is expected to present research results at a national meeting and publish original investigations in a referred journal. Conferences include a weekly clinical endocrine and basic science conference, a monthly research conference and a monthly journal club. The journal club reviews current articles related to endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism. The fellow is responsible for literature reviews on assigned topics relating to current clinical problems for presentation at the weekly clinical conferences and for supervision of students and residents rotating in the endocrine service.

Critical Issues
Compensation for the Early Childhood Workforce
Child care and preschool programs have difficulty attracting and keeping good individuals to work with young children. A third of program staff leave the field each year, primarily due to the lack of adequate compensation-low salaries, few benefits, and difficult working conditions. Research has clearly shown that the skill and commitment of the adults in early childhood programs directly affects the quality of care and education given to children. Below are some resources to help advocates and policy makers to improve the compensation of the early childhood workforce, and thus the quality of services for children and families. This area of our web site is a work in progress. Examples of other compensation initiatives and new resources are welcomed and can be sent to pubaff@naeyc.org.
Compensation and Retention Initiatives
The following charts provide detail on several state and local initiatives that address compensation and retention. These charts were first developed by Anne Mitchell of Early Childhood Policy Research in July 2001. They were updated by NAEYC in August 2002. The general model of these initiatives is a link between formal education and salary supplements. In general, compensation is improved through annual, or biannual, lump sum financial awards given directly to individuals working in early childhood programs. In some cases, the funds are awarded to the early childhood programs and the hourly wages of staff are increased. To address retention, participants must be working in their programs for a certain period of time, and make a commitment to remain there for a period as well. Well-know examples of these initiatives are WAGE$ in North Carolina and CARES in California-both are profiled in the charts.

Questions and Answers Pregnant and Parenting Women, Access to Treatment in South Carolina
Questions and Answers How many states have used child endangerment and similar criminal statutes to punish pregnant women? One. South Carolina stands alone in using child neglect and homicide statutes to punish women who are pregnant and engage in a behavior that might endanger a viable fetus. Every state court of last resort and all intermediate appellate courts that have addressed this issue have rejected the approach taken by the South Carolina Supreme Court in the Whitner case. What did the Whitner decision hold? A majority of the South Carolina State Supreme Court held that the word child in the state's criminal child endangerment statute includes viable fetuses, judicially rewriting the statute as follows: Any person having legal custody of any child, viable fetus , or helpless person, who shall, without lawful excuse, refuse or neglect to provide, . . .the proper care and attention for such child, viable fetus or helpless person, so that the life, health or comfort of such child

Chicora Foundation, Inc. · P.O. Box 8664 · Columbia, S.C. 29202 · USA · 803-787-6910
Education is inherent in all aspects of Chicora's work. Archaeological research generates newspaper publicity bringing the past to life for thousands of readers. Preservation assessments are a vehicle to educate museums and library staffs in a range of preservation issues. Consulting on archaeological conservation is an opportunity to emphasize the importance of ensuring that archaeological collections are available for future researchers. Our approach to public education is unique we are not trying to teach kids how to be archaeologists. We are not lecturing them on dates, arrowheads, and excavation techniques. Instead, we are using the thrill of the past to turn kids on to learning. Chicora Foundation develops socially responsive programs programs that reach out to the low income, at-risk students and offer them an incentive to learn. Programs, for example, that emphasize the ethnic heritage of African American students, encourage them to explore their "roots," and help them see that they have a heritage to be proud of. Chicora is equally committed to adult programs. For example, through our program entitled, "Preserving Your Family Treasures," we help people care for their family heirlooms photographs, diaries, letters, quilts, baptismal dresses, and other precious items. We have also been invited speakers at a number of functions ranging from Rotary Clubs to Boards of Realtors to historical organizations. In every case, Chicora representatives have taken the opportunity not simply to talk about our work, but to explore ways that the public can make a difference in the preservation of South Carolina's heritage.

Journey General Conferences
Conference programs consist of lectures, workshops, and special events. The lectures in the mornings and evenings are based on the speaker's field of study in Jungian psychology and/or spirituality and are related to our individual and societal needs for growth and healing. This offers a time for intellectual stimulation with questions and discussion encouraged. Speakers include those on the Advisory Board and many others well known in the fields of Jungian psychology, ritual, storytelling and spirituality. The workshops (by lecturers and others) are experiential/participatory in format. They offer tools for the inner work, to make intellectual concepts personal and to help participants identify and own some yet unacknowledged aspect of themselves. The workshops are sensitive to the needs of the participants and give opportunities for spiritual, psychological and emotional growth. Special events (group dances, theatre, music, films, and other forms of individual and group expression) are designed to help participants integrate new learnings through all aspects of their being...body, mind, soul, and spirit. The depth of community engendered by these shared experiences feeds the soul and enlivens the spirit. We are approved by the National Board for Certified Counselors; the Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, and Mental Health Counseling; and the South Carolina Board of Examiners for Licensure of Professional Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Psycho-Educational Specialists to provide

Bush Administration’s International Family Planning Cut Will Put Millions at Risk July 22, 2002 WASHINGTON, DC — Today, the State Department announced it is pulling the $34 million earmarked for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). This decision will severely harm women in approximately 140 countries. "The Bush administration is sacrificing the health of millions of poor women and children in order to play into the hands of anti-choice supporters," said Julia Ernst, legislative counsel for the Center for Reproductive Rights. "Family planning programs have clearly helped families worldwide; withholding these funds will have a devastating effect on a global scale,"

Collection Summary
Included among the manuscript collections of the University of South Carolina are several large collections of materials from John Shaw Billings II, the grandson and namesake of John Shaw Billings. In 1983 the National Library of Medicine had most of the material in the collection relating to the elder Billings microfilmed; an additional reel was filmed in 1990. The material is found as the library's MS Film 26. The material on the film comes from four collections. A collection of material relating specifically to the elder Billings was microfilmed in its entirety. It consists of 259 items, and includes Billings admission cards to medical school, his certification as a teacher, and copy of some of his military records. One Civil War letter from Billings to his wife is also included. Also found are letters of Oliver Wendell Holmes, Francis Parkman, Charles W. Eliot, and James R. Chadwick (the latter mostly relating to the unsuccessful campaigns to have Billings appointed Surgeon General of the Army). The remainder of the material is divided between the honors and tributes bestowed on him by his colleagues in the medical and library professions, and genealogical data on the Billings and Stevens families.
