North Carolina's Geography
Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the east, Tennessee on the west, Virginia to the north, and South Carolina and Georgia to the south, North Carolina is divided into three distinct geographic areas: the Mountains, in the west; the Heartland, often called the Piedmont, in the center; and the Coast, in the east. Each area has its own distinct features.
Mountains
The Appalachian mountain chain runs through the western part of the state. The highest peak, Mount Mitchell, in Yancey County, is 6,684 feet high, making it the tallest along the eastern coast of the U.S. The Great Smoky Mountains make this area one of the country's top scenic attractions. Visitors can enjoy grand vistas of magnificent beauty driving through the mountain ranges on the world-famous, 250-mile Blue Ridge Parkway.
Two-thirds of the mountains are covered with hardwood forests, and in autumn, they create a brilliant, colorful display. Skiing is a popular winter sport, with some areas getting 30 inches of snow a year. Summers are cool and refreshing with low humidity.
Piedmont
Encompassing the central part of the state, the Heartland is made up of gently rolling foothills.  Although the area enjoys four distinct seasons, temperatures are mild year round the average wintertime temperature is about 42 degrees, and in summer, it's 77 degrees. The area also enjoys sunshine for about 210 days a year. Located here are shopping meccas, top golf courses, historic sites and entertainment offerings.

Aiken Ft Mill Lugoff Rock Hill ... York SOUTH CAROLINA - Geography State of the SE United States. It is bordered by North Carolina (N), the Atlantic Ocean (SE), and Georgia (SW). South Carolina is roughly triangular in shape. The long coast, firm and even and lined with beautiful sand beaches north of Georgetown, becomes generally marshy to the south and is sliced by a network of rivers and creeks, creating a maze of inlets and the famous Sea Islands. The coastal climate is humid subtropical, with long, hot summers and short, mild winters. In this area are found cypress swamps, moss-hung oaks, beautiful flowering gardens, antebellum plantations, and the quaint historic seaports of Georgetown, Beaufort, and Charleston, the latter a major tourist attraction and one of the chief ports of hotels in the Southeast. The fall line, a boundary connecting Atlantic-bound rivers, separates the coastal plain from the rolling Piedmont plateau of the up-country and runs generally parallel to the coast, passing through Columbia. Inland, the climate is temperate, becoming progressively cooler as the altitude increases. In the extreme northwest are the Blue Ridge mts.; they occupy only c.500 sq mi (1,290 sq km) in the state, with Sassafras Mt. (3,560 ft/1,085 m) the highest point.

  • National Assessment of Educational Progress
The National Assessment of Educational Progress, operated by the US Department of Education, bills itself as The Nation's Report Card . While not explicitly tied to particular national or state standards, its reports provide a way of looking at student progress across the country in the eight subject areas the NAEP covers. These are the arts, civics, geography, math, reading, science, US history, and writing. Each subject has its own page that contains findings from related assessments, answers to basic questions about assessment, and standards and frameworks links. The NAEP site contains the following results (and the year last administered): the arts (1997), civics (1998), geography (1994; the 2001 results are being analyzed), math (2000), reading (2000), science (1996;the 2000 results are due in the fall of 2001), US history (1994; the 2001 results are being analyzed), and writing (1998).

    Introduction:

Mr. Greene and Coach Jordan have faced with a dilemma. We have to present information about the state of South Carolina and each of the 46 counties. The only map we have is the one that we found in the Fairforest Middle School and it is from 1826. Only 29 counties were established and that gives us a general idea about South Carolina, but we need more information so that we can assemble an accurate map of our beloved state. This is where your group comes into collecting data for the county in which you and your partner are assigned. Your group will inform us of the counties formed since 1826 and then inform us of an individual county in the Palmetto State. Good luck!!
    Task:

    Part I -Data Collection/County Research(60 points)
With a partner, you will have a county in which you are to gather historical and geographical information. You and your partner will each be given a sheet to fill out and will have to go to specific sites in order to obtain specific information from a web site. At these various sites, your group will find the year your county was established, the absolute and relative location of your county, the county seat, the population, population density, demographics, and distance from Mr. Greene and Coach Jordan's location, Fairforest Middle School. Part II-Informational Letter (50 points)
After your obtainment of the information needed to complete the county sheet, your group must write a letter (Block formatted) to Coach Jordan and Mr. Greene about your county that states where your county is, how big it is, how many people live there, where legislation occurs and how to get to your place from our location. This must be typed using Microsoft Word and has to be at least three paragraphs. The effectiveness of your communication to Mr.Greene and Coach Jordan will be noted, which means to watch your sentences and grammatical errors! Please proofread so that we have the highest quality information for use. Thank you so much for your cooperation.

South Carolina has many different regions. Some examples include the Blue Ridge, Piedmont, Sandhills, Inner Coastal Plains, Outer Coastal Plains, and Coastal Zone Regions. These are very important features of the land of South Carolina. They represent how the state is divided into all the regions. The Blue Ridge region, the smallest region, is named for the Blue Ridge Mountains, located in the extreme northwestern corner of SC. This region covers less than 2% of the state, about 600 square miles. Its natural features include rugged land, elevation from 1,400 feet to more than 3,500 feet. The mountains of SC were formed more than 350 million years ago. The mountains consist of metamorphic rock, and have eroded by slow movement of material downhill. The steepest slopes in SC are located in the Blue Ridge region. The highest mountain in SC is Pinnacle Mountain at 3,425 feet. Sassafras Mountain is shared between SC and NC, and rises to 3,554 feet above sea level. The closest zone to the Atlantic Ocean is the Coastal Zone. This zone covers the entire coast and barrier islands (the islands off the coast, which protect from waves and storms). This zone covers about 10 miles inland.
