Dr. Pam Barron: Interests Pamela Barron, Associate Professor, earned her doctorate, advanced masters and M.L.S. from the Florida State University. Her dissertation topic was the characterization of Native Americans in children's literature. She joined the UNCG faculty in August,1999, and has had more than 20 years experience in distance education and university teaching. She was the content and research supervisor for "Jump Over the Moon: SharingLiterature With Children," an award-winning series of fifteen half hour broadcast quality videotapes co-produced by the University of South Carolina and the South Carolina Educational Television Network in 1982. "Jump" was the first and is still the only telecourse of its kind. It has been used by more than 300 colleges, universities, and consortia in the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, and Africa. While teaching at the University of South Carolina, she also developed a video course on literacy, "Making Connections: Libraries, Literacy and Literature" for the Mind Extension University. As a faculty member of Florida State University' School of Information Studies, she helped pioneer their web- based course delivery, conceptualizing and teaching, four graduate level, totally web-based courses. Her work experience has been in youth services in school and public libraries. Notable publications include two textbooks designed for the "Jump" telecourse, as well as "Writers for Writing for Young Adults," and "Managing and Analyzing Your Collections: A Practical Guide for Small Libraries and School Media Centers." She and Dr. Carol Doll from Wayne State University are currently writing a text for Young Adult Literature.

THE BOOKSMITH YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD BOOKSTORE IN CYBERSPACE HOME PAGE BOOK SEARCH AUTHOR EVENTS STORE INFO ... SEND EMAIL If you think we're free from censorship . . . . . . . think again ! If you think the books you read aren't banned . . . you're wrong. Censors have been trying to ban books with unortodox or unpopular viewpoints since at least 387 B.C. Not only have censors tried to ban "dirty books," but classic authors like William Shakespeare and Mark Twain have come under attack, as have contemporary writers such as Annie Dillard and Alice Walker. Even books like dictionaries, travel guides and the Bible have been banned. If every book that anyone found objectionable were banned, there would be no books available. At The Booksmith, we think books are a great way to learn about many issues - things we sometimes have a hard time talking about. Not everyone will agree on everything, but if we read, reason, and think, books will help us to a better future. Books are sometimes banned because of a single word or because the cover suggests a subject matter offensive to someone, even if that person has not read the book. (Some do judge a book by its cover.) Censors have also targetted all works by an author after reading only one. Every year, hundreds of books are challenged and banned in libraries and schools all over the world. In the United States, censorship incidents have been documented in every state. Reading is not just a privilege in this country, it's a right. Let's keep it that way.

CDC awards funds to universities for research on how to prevent disease and injuries
As part of its new strategy to strengthen and expand the nation's public health research programs at universities, CDC announced today grants of $12.5 million to fund 50 research projects at academic health centers, research centers and university-affiliated programs across the country. The funding is part of CDC's Prevention Research Initiative, an effort to link the talents and skills of university-based scientists with the resources of health departments, community-based programs, and national organizations. "The awards ensure that public health research activities address problems affecting the nation's communities," says Dr. Jeffrey P. Koplan, director of the CDC. "The grants will help CDC and its partners conduct research that can directly improve community health and reduce the need for medical care." The grants cover a range of subjects, including prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, asthma, genetics and home, workplace and recreational injuries. (See complete list attached.) Activities include centers of excellence in prevention research, research projects to inform public policy, and research investigator training and development. The average grant is approximately $250,000. Most projects are funded for three years.

During the first year of the comprehensive program, current partnerships will be maintained and additional partnerships will be developed under the auspices of the CVHSC to initiate specific interventions related to primary prevention strategies to reduce the burden of CVD, including convening a group to develop a statewide plan to promote physical activity and convening an Obesity Council to coordinate efforts to reduce overweight and obesity. Developing the Scientific Capacity to Define the CVD Problem. During the core funding period, the CVH Program developed a population-based surveillance system to assess the burden or CVD at the state and county level. DHEC's Bureau of Epidemiology coordinates this system, which includes population data, mortality data, hospital discharge data, emergency room data, Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data, and Youth Risk Behavior Data System data. Data analysis is focused on assessing disparities, monitoring trends over time and supporting local initiatives. Results of data analysis have been disseminated through reports, fact sheets, oral presentations, publications, and the media. The data system is the basis for compiling a publication entitled

Richland School District #1
South Carolina
Richland School District One covers 482 square miles and serves the capital city of Columbia, South Carolina encompassing urban, suburban and rural neighborhoods. A diverse student enrollment of 27,000 students in 51 schools and an equal number of adult education students, give the district its character and strength. Richland School District One has embarked on a significant, aggressive plan to acquire, support and use technology throughout schools and the community. The establishment of the Information Resource Management Department in 1995, combining and expanding the former Educational Technology, Media Services, and Electronic Repair Units, signaled the beginning of the district's focus on the integration of technology in the instructional arena. The successful 184 million-dollar bond referendum in 1996 enabled the district to support new school construction, school renovation and renewal and the establishment and expansion of the district wide technology infrastructure. A three year, four-pronged infrastructure plan, funded by the bond at 9.23 million dollars, was initiated in the spring of 1997 that:
  • created the wide area network with Internet access at all locations
  • expanded all school LANs to all classrooms
  • replaced file servers in every school
  • placed two additional computers in every classroom and 15 computers in every media center.
