Meet the Staff Dr. Tom Peters, Director Dr. Peters has previously served the science and math education community in Illinois and Texas with experiences including high school and university level teaching, editing a state science newsletter, serving as a district level science specialist and establishing a science resource center. Tom enjoys the scenic beauty of the foothills region of South Carolina and relishes the challenge of statewide systemic change. His professional expertise is in implementing exemplary science programs and developing partnerships with business and industry. He is learning to love systemic reform in mathematics as well. Tom's national leadership roles include work with the National Science Resource Center and the Association of Science Materials Centers. Tom's wife, Julie, is a marketing specialist at the Clemson Montessori School where son, Daniel, and daughter, Emily, both attend. The family resides in Clemson. Sharon Lynch, Business Associate Sharon came to the AOP Hub by way of the Clemson Area Chamber of Commerce and Anderson School District Five. Her "connections" around town and business sense make her a huge asset to the hub. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Southern Wesleyan’s LEAP Program and received her clerical training from Manpower Consortium in New York City where she grew up. She started her career in calculating numbers and balancing budgets all those 28 years ago and hasn’t stopped yet. She has 3 daughters, Shanette, Pangi, and LaTwania along with 3 granddaughters, Calissa, Ebone, and Caliya who steal their "granny’s" heart. Her flare for education and love of numbers make her job seem like a breeze to those on the outside. Sharon lives in Clemson/Central area and when she is off the job, you can probably find her curled up with a book or arranging her elephant and angel figures. She thinks of everyday as a blessing and faces every challenge head on.

Wireless Networking: Flexible Teaching Options and Fast Internet Access for Calhoun County Schools When administrators at Calhoun County High School and John Ford Middle School in St. Matthews, South Carolina, went looking for a networking solution, they sought fast, reliable Internet access and flexibility to suit various classroom scenarios. The network system solution needed to provide Internet access to help capture and retain student attention, while offering teachers the ability to easily change applications. Jerry Crisp, coordinator of technology for Calhoun County School District, sought to determine the appropriate network solution that would offer both cost-savings and flexibility. "We needed a system that was mobile. Teachers wanted more computers in their classrooms so that as many students as possible could access the Internet at one time," he said.
In Search of a Solution
"Wireless networking was the obvious answer," said Crisp. "I had initial concerns about the capability of wireless local area networks to perform at high enough speeds with many users simultaneously connected to the Internet."

Through the generosity of its contributors, The Walker Foundation for the Multihandicapped, Blind and Deaf of South Carolina, Inc., aids and strengthens the work of the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind (SCSDB). The Foundation is a charitable 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization. Through various fund-raising efforts, the Foundation generates funding through contributions of individual and corporate donors as well as private foundation grants. Mission The Foundation's mission is to enhance the educational, vocational and developmental programs for individuals with sensory disabilities in the state so that they may achieve their greatest potential of independence. This goal is accomplished by providing grants, referral information, public awareness programs and direct assistance to the SCSDB and other organizations and individuals concerned with sensory disabilities. Board Policy Revisions Continue
The Sumter School District 17 Board of Trustees is currently in the process of revising the entire policy manual. This extensive process, which is conducted by the South Carolina School Boards Association, will take approximately eighteen months to complete.
All policies have been switched to the new codification system developed by the National School Boards Association and are based on the four roles of the board. Each policy has a purpose statement that relates to one or more roles of the board. Also, the policies are constantly updated to reflect changes in any laws and contain new language to reflect compliance with accountability requirements as well as SACS accreditation.
Each section requires two readings and after first reading, the section is available for public input. The board approved first reading of Sections E and F, which pertain to support services and facilities development, on March 11. A copy of Sections E and F are available at the district office and in each school office for the public to review. In order for the public to address the board, all feedback and suggestions must be submitted to the superintendent in writing 72 hours in advance of the April 10 board meeting.
