The University of South Florida Foreign Language Education Programs for the professional development of teachers are approved by the State Department of Education. The University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), and the College of Education is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
How Can you Become a Certified Teacher?
Certification to teach is determined by the Florida State Department of Education. A degree is awarded by the University. Students who complete the M.A. Plan II in Foreign Language Education offered by USF will be certified to teach K-12 because the degree program is approved by the State of Florida. The Planned Program developed with the faculty advisor shortly after the student has been officially admitted, if completed, will result in the awarding of the degree and certification. Upon completion of the degree, certification as a K-12 foreign language teacher will be placed on your transcript. This indicates that you completed an approved State of Florida teacher education program qualifying you, based on your course work, to be certified at the K-12 levels in foreign language education. You will need to take the FTCE [Florida Teacher Certification Exam] and receive passing scores on the subject area exam and the professional exam section. FTCE must be passed and scores must be on file in the Internship Office prior to the conclusion of the student internship.

CLEMSON HAS ANSWERS TO TEACHER SHORTAGE
CLEMSON South Carolina public schools opened this month without teachers for all classrooms. Just how many vacancies the state has won't be clear until mid-September when those numbers are compiled by the South Carolina Center for Teacher Recruitment. Clemson University has added a pair of innovative programs to its solid palate of teacher education programs that should help tackle South Carolina's shortage of educators. In addition to its traditional teacher education curriculum, which is the largest undergraduate program in the state, Clemson will help solve the shortage by recruiting teachers from among two groups who normally don't find themselves leading a classroom: African-American men and retired military officers. Call Me Mister is a collaboration of several South Carolina colleges seeking to put African-American men in elementary school teaching positions. The Troops-to-Teachers Coalition will recruit and train retired military officers. Clemson University is the lead agency for both programs.

    Exemplary Practices in Teacher Recruitment
    South Carolina
The South Carolina Center for Teacher Recruitment (SCCTR) is the oldest and most effective teacher recruitment center in the nation. It began as a center that piloted a Teacher Cadet Program in four high schools and now operates 12 programs aimed at identifying, attracting, placing and retaining well-qualified teachers in South Carolina classrooms. The SCCTR also assists state and local leaders in addressing the issue of teacher recruitment and retention. State leadership for career/technical education in South Carolina is working with the SCCTR staff to make career/technical teachers a target group and to develop a strategy for these teachers. South Carolina is anticipating hiring as many as 250 career/technical teachers over the next four years. The SCCTR target groups are middle and high school students, college students and adults. The Center provides these major programs: Minority Recruitment — This program offers activities to increase the number of minorities entering education. It includes a partnership with the South Carolina Association of Black School Educators and the Eisenhower Consortium for Mathematics and Science Education. ProTeam Middle School Program — This program is designed to interest middle school students in the education profession before they become "turned off" to the possibility of a career in teaching. Participating in teacher-like activities is essential to the program.
