    Geographic aspects of the expedition
Exploring the west: How all began
When Thomas Jefferson became President of the United States little was known about the western part of North America. There had been many expeditions but rarely any went far into the West. One exception was the expedition of Robert Gray in 1792. He sailed up the the mouth of the river called Columbia. Trappers and traders made also their way into the West, but even they didn't cross the Country up to the Pacific coast.
Thomas Jefferson was keen on knowing more about the West of the country and that was why he asked Congress for $ 2,500 for an expedition. Jefferson's arguments towards the importance for such an expedition were not the only reason for Congress to invest money in the plan, but also the fact that Napoleon, in need of money for his expansory wars in Europe, sold a large area to the United States. So when he was allowed the sum he asked for, he confronted William Clark with his plan. Some of the tasks were: Ascending the Missouri to its source, crossing the Continental Divide and descending the Columbia River to its mouth. For the complete version of Jefferson's letter to Lewis and Clark klick here
    Cartographic challenge
Before the expedition was assembled in Illinois during the winter of 1803/1804, William Clark had made himself familiar with cartographic tools like map making and latitude and longitude fixing. He studied maps and geographic information provided by Lewis, and practiced using the octant and sextant.

Center for Western Studies Heads South Dakota History Project
SIOUX FALLS - Historians from throughout South Dakota and from other states are at work on a new history of South Dakota, scheduled for publication in 2004 in celebration of the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The project is under the editorial direction of the publications committee of the Center for Western Studies of Augustana College, with Harry Thompson as managing editor. Thompson is director of research collections and publications at the Center for Western Studies. Responding to the need for a fresh interpretation of South Dakota's past, the new history will emphasize the diversity of the state's cultural and geographic identities. The most recent histories of the state - by Herbert Schell, John R. Milton, and Robert Karolevitz - were published in the 1970s. Planning for the new state history began in 2001. The new history will feature essays by nationally recognized authors as well as full-length chapters by noted scholars. The history is intended for general readers, college students, and teachers of South Dakota history. Major topics to be addressed are geography, Plains Indian history and culture, exploration, immigration, politics, the Black Hills, ranching, farming, religious, educational, and medical institutions, town-sites, urbanization, literature and the arts, and the challenge of cultural change.

The student may choose either general geology or geography with a general, environmental, or geographic techniques/spatial analysis emphasis. Ample opportunity is available for independent student research and internships in the student's chosen field of study. Such research is an integral part of the curriculum regardless of the option chosen.
    • Our Introductory Laboratories serve both as a lab for introductory geology and geography students, classroom for several upper-level geology and geography courses, and other department gatherings such as special seminars and lectures. Subdisciplines within the department have their own research laboratories Booth Library offers a wide range of journals, books, maps, catalogues, and CD-ROMs for student and faculty use. Accessible from the library, and anywhere on campus, is Illinet Online, GeoRef, and other science reference sources. WASHINGTON, DC SEPTEMBER 16, 1996
BUILDING THE INTELLECTUAL BRIDGE TO THE 21st CENTURY
Good morning. Let me begin by saying how delighted I am to join Jack Gibbons and Governor Geringer and all of you for this year's EPSCoR Conference and discuss the future of science and education and the role of the EPSCoR states. I would also like to thank our moderator Dr. Luther Williams, Rich Anderson and all the EPSCoR staff and of course Joe Danek, for their fine work in putting together this year's conference and for making the EPSCoR program a model for supporting excellent research and education. So I look forward to a thoughtful and rich exchange of ideas on how the EPSCoR program can contribute to the meeting the challenges facing the research and education community as we approach the next century. Before I begin my comments this morning, I must confess to being somewhat disappointed that we are be here in Washington for this year's meeting. While I'm sure that most of you are happy to be here to get the scoop about what is happening inside the beltway, I was hoping to get outside the confines of DC to visit one of your states. Actually, I was hoping we'd be meeting in:
