National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) The National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) was conducted September-October 1999 by the American Legacy Foundation in collaboration with the CDC Foundation and with technical assistance from the CDC. The NYTS report provides first-ever national data on the prevalence of current tobacco use among middle school students and documents the emergence of bidis and kreteks among middle and high school students. Approximately 15,000 students in grades 6 through 12 from about 131 public and private schools participated in the NYTS. A previous report focusing on tobacco use prevalence was published in the January 28, 2000 issue of the MMWR.

May 21, 2001 (PIERRE) - Jeane Wharton has been selected to serve as state director for ExplorNet-South Dakota. As state director, Wharton will be working with the South Dakota Department of Education and Cultural Affairs and the Division of Workforce and Career Preparation to expand ExplorNet's Computer Recycling (CPR) program to the state's schools. Prior to joining ExplorNet, Wharton served as the Vice President of Member Services of the South Dakota Chamber of Commerce and Industry. "We are delighted to have someone with Jeane's skills and background to roll out our program in South Dakota," said Dave Boliek, ExplorNet's Chief Executive Officer. Computer Recycling (CPR) teaches students to upgrade, build, and repair computers. Students who successfully complete this program are prepared to take the A+ Certification exam, the industry standard for computer service technicians. The repaired computers can be deployed to classrooms or media centers throughout participating school districts so all students can benefit from the latest technology.

Working as a Technical Coordinator in a school (or anywhere) is a lot of work; anything done right normally is. In the end, though, if you follow the items outlined in this document you'll have a well-planned, functional computer system. We have designed these suggestions by keeping in mind the goal of a school computer system is to support the Administration and maintain maximum access and usage for both students and teachers alike, while making effective use of your time everyday.
Just remember that if you slow down a little bit, you’ll be able to proceed with a better understanding of the problems and challenges you’re facing. And you’ll be far less likely to overlook key details, which may prevent fires from starting in the first place.
Bottom line: As simple as these tips may sound, every top-notch administrator must demonstrate a solid mastery of these foundation skills. Doing so will make you more efficient and more effective within your school

  • Friendship Through Education is committed to connecting children from different nations in an effort to bridge cultures and broaden understanding. The New Jersey Department of Education's Office of Educational Technology administers 39 ACE Centers located in economically disadvantaged school districts. The number of South Dakota schools offering courses using the state's Distance Learning Network (DLN) has more than doubled in just one year. Fingerprint scanning may offer a solution for the all too familiar password amnesia.
Friendship Through Education Friendship Through Education NJ Addresses the Digital Divide Source: New Jersey Department of Education Distance Learning in South Dakota The number of South Dakota schools offering courses using the state's Distance Learning Network (DLN) has more than doubled in just one year - from 46 schools in 2000 to 96 schools this year. Schools using South Dakota's DLN can sign up for classes taught by another South Dakota teacher in a different community. By using teachers already in a state school district, the question of certification and qualification to teach is not an issue. Individual school districts decide on whether to students grant credit for DLN classes. DLN is designed to supplement a school's resources. The system allows students to take classes they wouldn't otherwise be able to access. By law, an adult still has to be in the room, so schools use mentors who handle discipline and hand out materials and tests. In rural areas of South Dakota, the ability to deliver classes via DLN can make the difference in keeping a small school open.

Curriculum
For the past 5 years, I have had the honor of working with the administrative team and the K-12 staff as the curriculum coordinator for the school district. Curriculum is a dynamic and on-going process. It truly is “what we are all about” in terms of student learning. We are constantly working to improve and align our curriculum both horizontally (across grade levels) and vertically (a subject such as language arts which is taught from kindergarten to senior year.) Back to Top Staff Development Professional development plays a major role in implementing the curriculum. This is a time of curriculum work and learning for the teachers. Technology The Okoboji Community School District has been a leader in Instruction Technology. As technology has grown and permeated our society, this school system has kept pace. Currently, our three district buildings and administrative offices are connected through a WAN (wide area network) with approximately 200 computers. All are connected to the Internet with a Firewall for site filtering.
