South Dakota
Council of Mental Health Centers INTRODUCTION The eleven mental health centers in South Dakota provide a variety of services to people of all social and economic groups. Just as a large medical group practice includes physicians who have many specialties to help people with medical problems, a mental health center has highly qualified professionals who have many specialties to help people with emotional problems. These specialists may include psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, social workers, counselors and case managers.
Mental health centers have the ability to utilize the strengths of this diverse staff to provide quality services ranging from brief, counseling services to very intensive interventions designed to prevent a person from costly hospitalizations. Many of the mental health centers have also responded to other needs in their communities by offering specialized counseling and educational programs for employers, physicians, attorneys, schools and nursing homes.
Specialized programs or services offered by mental health centers may include services for: Adults with Major Mental Illness Children and Adolescents Employers Physicians ... General Adult

Lipton Gonzalez, for example, is a biology professor's dream. In high school he scored the maximum "5" on the advanced placement tests in biology and calculus. Now a college sophomore, he has a 3.9 grade point average and is working on a research project on how coronary bypass surgery affects platelet and neutrophil levels in the blood. But he could not afford a four-year college. Instead, he lives at home and attends the Kendall campus of Miami-Dade Community College, which charges only $471 per semester for tuition. Two-thirds of Kendall's 20,000 students are Hispanic. "Sometimes people rag on us because we go to a community college," says Lipton, who was born in Cuba. But now he and several dozen classmates are getting the chance to prove themselves by attending free courses and carrying out research with professors at the nearby University of Miami, which also pays them stipends, covers their community college tuition, and, if they do well, invites them to complete their junior and senior years at the university tuition-free. "I'm doing things that I've never tried before and I really like it," says first-year student Tatiana Ferreiro, who is learning to use new stable isotope techniques to study how the intrusion of saltwater affects photosynthesis rates and the broader health of freshwater plants in Florida. "The only way you can really learn about science is to experience it yourself." Betty Blanco, who is sequencing DNA to learn about genetic variation among small Florida mammals that are environmentally threatened, says, "I consider this a pathway to what I want to do next."

P SYCHIATRY R ESIDENCY T RAINING P ROGRAMS Finding a suitable place to live, work, and raise a family is becoming more and more difficult. Sioux Falls offers the advantages of larger cities: vibrant lifestyle and challenging jobs with solid incomes, and the benefits of living in rural areas: safer, cleaner environments and family-friendly values. Chartered in 1889, Sioux Falls has evolved from a remote outpost into the economic and cultural center of a tri-state region. From Money magazine, which ranked the city's economy number one in the nation for three years running, to the Christian Science Monitor, which declared Sioux Falls "a national model for urban living," national publications agree that the people of Sioux Falls have a lot to be proud of. Sioux Falls businesses drive a robust local economy with job opportunities that continue to increase in both number and diversity. Employment opportunities in Sioux Falls are plentiful. The South Dakota Department of Labor noted that the Sioux Falls MSA is "the largest and fastest-growing labor market area in the state. This MSA posted an annual average employment level of 102,200, an increase of 3,300 workers — 70 percent of the total job growth statewide." Wages in Sioux Falls are competitive with other similarly sized cities in the region. And, because South Dakota is one of the few states with no state income tax, Sioux Falls employees take home more of what they earn.

Things to consider before you enroll in a private vocational school:
Is the school promising you a job when you graduate?
It is against the law for private vocational schools to use any business name, logo or insignia that is designed to be deceptive and mislead potential students about affiliations the school might have. Did you answer an employment agency ad for a job and found you were really calling a school?
Is a course necessary to get a job?
Check the newspaper to see who is offering the jobs you want. Call the human resources departments of some of the companies and ask if you really need a course. How are you going to pay for the course?
Depending on which type of loan you get, you may have to start repaying the loan as soon as you finish school.
It can take many years to pay back the loan, depending on the cost of the course and how high the interest rate is. Unlike many other types of loans or debts, school loans are very difficult to discharge in bankruptcy.

Community Information:
For additional information regarding Sioux Falls, South Dakota, feel free to visit the following websites: www.siouxfalls.com or www.siouxfalls.org Sioux Falls is a city of 124,000 progressive citizens. We boast of great schools, a booming economy, fresh air, clean water, safe neighborhoods, high-quality medical care, excellent transportation services, enthusiastic community spirit, and weather of all seasons. The Sioux Falls economy continues to thrive. Companies continue to open new facilities in Sioux Falls while established companies expand; thus creating new jobs, infusing new capital, and broadening our tax base. Since 1990, almost $1.9 billion worth of construction has occurred, 11,481 new housing units have been built, and non-farm wage and salary employment has increased by over 30,000. More fulfilling career opportunities, metropolitan area amenities, ready access to educational resources, downturns in the regional farm economy, and other factors have contributed to a general migration of job-seekers from many rural areas and small towns in eastern South Dakota and the surrounding region to Sioux Falls. This, plus the growing regional economic influence of Sioux Falls, and its expanding population have had a positive effect on the labor supply. During the last decade, Sioux Falls enjoyed healthy, sustained growth in its population and economic base. This trend began in 1981 with the location of Citibank and continued with the location of several other financial service companies. Although the area has been at "full employment" for several years, new families have continued to move to the area and companies have been successful in attracting employees. Labor data shows that the labor force is very mobile and workforce projections show that the local labor market is capable of accommodating large employers.
