Americans flock to space museums 'to pay tribute'
E-mail Story to a Friend Printer Friendly February 3, 2003
By DON BABWIN, Associated Press CHICAGO (AP) - Lee Einbinder had planned to spend a leisurely day at home, but the Columbia tragedy brought him to a planetarium instead. "This was the place we wanted to come to pay tribute," said Einbinder, a truck driver, who was at Chicago's Adler Planetarium with his wife and 7-year-old daughter. "I thought here she can see why they did what they did, why they take chances." Americans crowded space museums Sunday, sometimes leaving flowers, candles and handwritten notes to pay tribute to the seven astronauts killed in the disaster. Visitors at the Adler Planetarium kept their voices down and their children close as television screens showed the Columbia's crew members smiling and talking about their mission.

Museums in the Digital Space
By Suzanne Keene - October 2000 The digital cultural space in the UK is rapidly developing, as large scale government funding is made available for public networks and content. This builds on investment in digitisation sustained over a number of yeas by higher education funding bodies. Political, economic, social, technical and organisational trends are shaping the future space. Museums have multiple stakeholders, and their current expectations need to be appreciated, from the perspective of the kind of electronic content that museums can produce. Possibilities for museums in the future digital space have been set out in the report from the National Museum Directors' Conference, A Netful of Jewels [ ]. The content that is already available, however, is imaginative and highly attractive, and shows the potential for museums to take their place in the digital space.
Shaping the Digital Space
Political
The UK government is backing the concept of the information society / economy in all its ramifications with policies and substantial funding [ ]. There is also strong backing and funding from the European Union.

Life(style) Preservers
Since the beginning of recorded time, man has created art. From cave paintings to space suits, man's lifestyle is displayed in museums around the world.
Great artists are great observers and they preserve for us what life was like when they lived it. Metropolitan Museum of Art displays European Medieval art depicting religion as the predominant force in the lives of the people. Italian Renaissance art reflects the growing interest in science. At the Museum of Modern Art , one can study the French Impressionist School of art. Impressionists, while concerned with the technique of applying paint to canvas, painted life as they saw it, full of color, light, and richness.
Norman Rockwell and the school of Illustrators he championed have preserved for us American life in the middle part of the 1900s. The family oriented, small town community atmosphere particularly around 1950 showed a country tired of war and eager to live at home. Family, work, community, and church formed the lifestyle. There were few frenetic races in business or science. Time was not the ever pressing force that it became in the late 1900s.
The Norman Rockwell Museum
in Stockbridge Massachusetts is perfectly situated to feel the time and community of the mid-1900s. This small town exudes the atmosphere where most of Rockwell's models lived alongside him. The museum houses his paintings, and the town houses his subjects.

American History, Air and Space museums open
The National Museum of American History reopened in Washington Tuesday despite the partial shutdown of the federal government. Officials shifted private trust fund money to pay 28 Smithsonian Institution workers. "We are doing this on a minimal basis with just the minimum amount of staff we need," said Smithsonian spokesman David Umansky. The National Air and Space Museum, which generates revenue through its IMAX Theater and the Einstein Planetarium, also will be open through Dec. 31. None of the Smithsonian museums charges admission. The Air and Space Museum charges for its theater and planetarium. That ability to generate income has allowed it to stay open during the shutdown. "Because of the last shutdown and reductions in federal appropriations, we need to generate as much revenue from sources as possible," Umansky said. Other Smithsonian museums will remain closed. About two-thirds of the Smithsonian's 6,600 workers are considered federal workers. Most were sent home last Monday when the Interior Department lost authority to spend money. Meanwhile, cyberspace has come to the rescue of tourists looking for alternatives to closed national monuments and museums.
