Near Operational Status
DAVID A. FULGHUM/LOS ANGELES and TUCSON, ARIZ. D irected energy weaponslasers and high-power microwavesare emerging from the black world of classified projects as the time nears for their debut on aircraft, vehicles, ships and eventually even spacecraft. One concept for an aircraft with directed energy weapons shows a laser being fired from the aft position in a C-130 and a high-power microwave device from forward of the wing. The first combat applications, probably involving high-power microwaves (HPM) used as antielectronics weapons, will appear within the next 4-5 years, say top Raytheon officials. A short, intense energy surge can scramble computer memories and damage electronic components. Raytheon is already involved in most of the major directed energy programs. The company is two years into a project that would put a laser weapon on Lockheed Martin's multiservice, F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. It also is one of the contractors asked to study the design of a high-power microwave weapon for Boeing's X-45 unmanned combat air vehicle (UCAV). Moreover, it has won the DD-X contract for next-generation U.S. Navy ships. Its electric drive will one day power a laser-based air defense system. An anti-personnel device using high-power microwaves to heat water in the skin can inflict enough pain to cause crowds to disperse.

Download: The HIT Lab is making available the Augmented Reality tracking libraries used as the basis for the Shared Space project and SIGGRAPH demo. The libraries use computer vision techniques to precisely calculate a camera position and orientation relative to a tracking marker. The programmer can then use this information to draw 3D virtual objects that are exactly aligned with a real object. The libraries are available here for the SGI IRIX and Windows (95,98,NT) platforms a nd come with sample source code, documentation and several simple applications.

Space Plasmas Group
The Space Plasmas Group investigates current research topics in space plasmas. Since the 1972 discovery of Oxygen in the Earth's magnetosphere by this group, we have been a leader in the investigation of plasma composition in the Earth's magnetosphere and near comets. We have flown plasma composition experiments on the ISEE DE AMPTE , and CRRES magnetospheric missions and we have been co-investigators on the Giotto cometary mission. Currently, we have operating composition experiments on the FAST and POLAR missions. Future missions include the IMAGE magnetospheric mission and the Rosetta cometary mission as well as collaboration on the Cluster magnetospheric mission. Other activities within our group include design of small, free-flying magnetometers for space applications, all sky imaging of the aurora from the Antarctic, and planning future space plasmas missions.

    NGST - Next Generation Space Telescope
    The Next Generation Space Telescope will be constructed using advanced optical technology that produces extremely light weight mirrors. Mirrors must become larger to collect light from fainter, more distant objects. Since the cost of launching satellites is a strong function of their weight, lighter mirrors mean smaller launch costs. Marshall Space Flight Center is testing new materials and assembly techniques to make giant reflectors for launch into space. Facilities involved:
    Constellation X
    Constellation-X is a collection of several orbiting x-ray telescopes coordinated to observe with the same power as a larger observatory. New types of mirror production are needed for this telescope. Metal x-ray mirrors replicated from a mandrel are much lighter and cheaper than glass, like the mirrors in the Chandra Observatory, so they are desirable for space applications. Marshall Space Flight Center is advancing replicated optics technology.

    The Chandra X-ray Observatory
    The Chandra Observatory (formerly called the Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility - AXAF) the world's most powerful X-ray telescope, was launched on July 23, 1999 to view X-ray sources from space. Astronomers must have this observatory in space because the Earth's atmosphere absorbs and blocks celestial X-ray radiation from reaching the ground. Chandra flies 200 times higher than the Hubble Space Telescope and its orbit takes it one third of the way to the Moon. The cylindrical glass mirrors in Chandra are the largest of their kind and the smoothest ever created. Chandra and its upper stage was the heaviest payload ever launched on the Shuttle. The Chandra design and development program was managed by MSFC. The observatory's telescope was tested and certified at the MSFC X-ray calibration facility.
    Solar X-ray Imager (SXI)
    SXI is designed to obtain a continuous sequence of corona X-ray images from the Sun to monitor solar activity for its effects on the Earth's upper atmosphere. It uses a Wolter grazing incidence mirror similar to the type in Chandra. SXI was assembled and tested at MSFC in the stray light facility and will be launched as part of a Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) weather satellite.

    WASHINGTON Consider it a stretch of the imagination or the ultimate high-wire act. All aboard the space elevator, to be whisked above Earth in an electromagnetic-powered cable car. Taking an elevator to space has largely been in the realm of science fiction more engineering fancy than fact. But recent studies suggest that a melding of space tether, magnetic levitation and carbon nanotube technologies could transform this "Jack and the Beanstalk" idea into a mass transit system for the 21st century space traveler.     Space 2000 - Space equipment technology 1995-2000
    The Space 2000 programme concentrated on the technology of space satellites and their ground support equipment. Its main target was to increase the opportunities of the Finnish space industry to carry out ESA projects, thus, enabling Finnish companies to be competitive. The total volume of the programme was EUR 16 million of which Tekes funded approximately 40 percent. The evaluation report of the programme as pdf was published in May 2001. Space technology covers a broad spectrum of challenging technologies. However, it is often based on the same technological solutions as earthbound applications. Space technology offers companies and research institutes opportunities to further apply and develop their expertise and products and to extend their markets to new, challenging fields of application.     you may need to open this file in a graphics editor for proper colors Space Elevator Technology: The Space Elevator concept is a structure extending from the surface of the Earth to geo-stationary Earth orbit (GEO). Its center of mass is at GEO such that the entire structure orbits the Earth in sync with the Earth’s rotation maintaining a stationary position over its base attachment at the equator. It is envisioned that such a structure would be used as a mass transportation system in the latter part of the 21st century for transporting people, payloads, gasses and power between Earth and space. The above illustration for a Space Elevator concept is taken from the geo-stationary transfer station looking down the length of the elevator structure towards Earth. Electromagnetic vehicles travel the length of the elevator to transfer passengers and cargo between Earth and space. Large reels with high strength cables work back and forth to provide adjustments to the position of the geo station and an asteroid counter weight above (not shown) to maintain the center of mass for the entire structure at a geo-stationary point above the Earth. Research into the feasibility of space elevators indicates that there are Five Key Technologies for Future Space Elevator Development:
