Geography of Spain Occupying 505,000km of the Iberian peninsula, Spain is the second largest country in Western Europe after France, and has the second highest average altitude (650m) after Switzerland. Its highest mountain is the Teide in Tenerife at 3,718m. Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the West and the Mediterranean Sea to the East, the centre of Spain is a fertile platform known as 'la Meseta'. The peninsular is separated from neighbouring France by the Pyrenees Mountains which, as well as providing hydroelectric energy and water, are also an important tourist area. Thanks to the favourable climate, tourism is an important industry in Spain, and the many beaches and mountain resorts attract many visitors each year. Agriculture is also an important source of income, and the large wheat farms on the plains and olive fields in Andalucia bring much foreign revenue to the peninsula.

As evening approaches, millions of Spaniards from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean swarm into the streets for a ritual that even cars and television have not changed. Well dressed citizens stroll through parks, plazas, and streets exchanging handshakes, nods or conversation with friends and neighbors. The paseo, or evening promenade, is an exercise in sociability, rather than physical fitness. During the 12 th and 13 th th century pogroms against the Moors and Jews. Spain Book Selections

TraveLearn Cybertravel News Spain - Volume 17 Spain Trivia
The Centro de Arte Reina Sofia is the new home of Picasso's famous eleven-foot high and twenty-five foot wide mural-size image of destruction and terror during the Spanish Civil War, "Guernica." This museum of 20th-century Spanish art is named for the present Queen Sofia and the collection revolves around the work of three giants: Miro, Dali, and of course, Picasso. Everything you may have heard about the eccentricities of Madrid's mealtimes is true: the 3 p.m. lunches, the dinners that begin at 10 p.m. and continue well past midnight. Tapas, bite-sized bar snacks, are a form of between-meal snacking that have evolved as a national pastime, probably in part as a response to Madrid's and much of Spain's unusual mealtime schedule. Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile, the royal couple called the Catholic Monarchs took Granada in 1492 and thus completed the reconquest from the Moors. They also gave decisive impetus to the long process of elevating a central power - in effect the crown of Castile - above the other kingdoms and regions on the Iberian peninsula. Castilian increasingly became the dominant language and Madrid, in due course, the center of the first modern bureaucracy. To this day domination from Madrid meets with widespread resentment.
