    Courtesy National Tourist Office of Spain Spanish territory comprises nearly five-sixths of the Iberian Peninsula, which the nation shares with Portugal, the micro-state of Andorra, and the British possession of Gibraltar. Spanish territory also includes two sets of islandsthe Balearic Islands (Spanish, Islas Baleares) in the Mediterranean Sea and the Canary Islands (Spanish, Canarias) in the Atlantic Oceanand two city enclaves in North Africa, Ceuta and Melilla (see fig. 1 ). Peninsular Spain, covering an area of 492,503 square kilometers, consists of a central plateau known as the Meseta Central, which is enclosed by high mountains on its north, south, east, and part of its western sides. The area that is predominantly plateau also encompasses several mountain systems that are lower than the peripheral mountains. Although Spain thus has physical characteristics that make it, to some extent, a natural geographic unit, there are also internal geographic features that tend to compartmentalize the country. The topographical characteristics also generate a variety of climatic regimes throughout the country. By far the greatest part of the country, however, experiences a continental climate of hot, dry summers and rather harsh, cold winters. Where these conditions prevail, the soils have eroded, vegetation is sparse, and agriculture is difficult. Irrigation is practiced where possible, but it is difficult because the flow in most streams is seasonally irregular, and the stream beds of larger rivers are frequently much lower than the adjacent terrain.

    Canary Islands The seven islands that make up the Canary Islands are located more than 1,000 kilometres south of the Iberian peninsula and only 115 kilometres from the nearest point of the African coast. Their volcanic origin and their special position in the Atlantic Ocean have given the islands a unique character. The resulting landscape is unlike any other found in Europe or Africa. The seven most important pieces of land are Lanzarote Fuerteventura Gran Canaria , La Palma, El Hierro Tenerife and Gomera. Although local culture is encouraged, the residents of the islands speak Spanish, look Spanish and feel Spanish. Tenerife is the biggest island and is as lush as any tropical paradise except for the volcanic zones where the landscape is almost lunar-like and the famous Mount Teide with it's snow-capped peak. Gran Canaria has wonderful beaches to offer and a swinging nightlife. It is famous for bananas and tomatoes. Fuerteventura is the beachiest of all the islands and just a stone's throw away from the Sahara Desert. Gomera consists of a hilly landscape.

    Located in southwestern Europe, bordering the North Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, between Portugal and France. The country covers a total area of 505,957 sq km. Spain has 4,964 km of coastline. Besides five other places of sovereignty on and off the coast of Morocco, Spain consists of 17 administrative regions , 15 of which are on mainland Spain. Spain occupies four-fifths of the Iberian peninsula and is a land of immense geographical diversity.It offers the tourist a great deal. Spain's coastline has long since been a magnet for visitors but in recent years more and more people are spending holiday time, exploring beautiful and cultural Spain, away from the sea and sand. Spain has everything from lush, green forests and mountain ranges, through to endless arid plains and long, sandy beaches.

    Although Spain lies in the temperate zone, it's rugged topography gives rise to a great diversity of climates. What is known as rainy Spain, lies mainly to the north of the Cantabrian mountains. Here there are mild winters and cool summers with only a slight variation in temperature. This climate is typical of western Europe. To the south lies dry Spain which makes up two-thirds of Spain. Here there is scarce rainfall with almost constant, hot sun. When it does rain it is often heavy with fierce thunderstorms.

    spain is situated in the far west of Europe and forms the largestpart of the Iberian peninsula, which it shares with Portugal.
    http://www.oxfam.org.uk/coolplanet/ontheline/explore/journey/spain/geography.htm
    Spain is situated in the far west of Europe and forms the largest part of the Iberian peninsula, which it shares with Portugal. Spain has 4,964 km of coast-line. In the North, Spain is bordered by France, Andorra, and the Bay of Biscay; in the East by the Mediterranean Ocean; in the South by the Atlantic Ocean, and in the West by Portugal. Spain also rules the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, and the enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla in Morocco. The landscape of Spain is varied and ranges from the wet green lands of Cantabria and Galicia to the Almerian deserts and the rugged Pyrenees mountain ranges. After Switzerland, Spain is the most mountainous country in Europe. The Canary Islands are dry and barren because they are volcanic, and the sand on the beaches in Lanzarote is crushed black lava. Spain has only seven navigable rivers, the longest of which is the Ebro stretching for 910 km. Northern Spain, which includes the Basque country, is wild and sparsely populated. The east coast of Spain is very popular with tourists because of its white sandy beaches along the Costa Brava and also the stretches of beach on the Costa del Sol. In the summer the beaches can get very crowded because they are one of the most popular European holiday destinations. More than 52 million people visit Spain each year. Printable version sv=13;
